TV36 A's Telecasts Need Your Help
AN folks,
We’re starting a new feature on our TV36 A’s telecasts, and need your help. I've come to you because in the past I've seen some very nice baseball photos posted here.
We’re looking for baseball oriented photos to be submitted by A’s fans, for the “Snapfish Baseball Snapshot” which will run in every one of our telecasts.
If we use your photo on the air, you will automatically be entered in a contest that will have some very unique prizes. Those prizes should be announced with all the contest details in the days to come.
If you have some fun baseball photos you’d like to submit (you’ll get photo credit on the air, of course), you can do so at Snapfish.com/baseball.
Anyway, thanks much for your help.

does kicu still do pregame shows?
with that HS sports focus duo?
by Asfan4ever723 on May 6, 2008 4:48 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
nope
KICU released their entire sports team at the end of last year to concentrate on more news programming…no more High School Sports Focus and On Deck Shows. Brodie Brazil still has his website with archives from the shows. http://www.brodiebrazil.com/

My world is changing and I can't take it any more!
No more Swisher, No more Buckley, and now No more Brodie? This is ridiculous!
Well, I hope Brodie finds himself in a good place, I wish him the best of luck. He will certainly be missed by me!
We want our Swisher Back!!

sacramento
As soon as I can see your telecasts in Sacramento I’ll submit pictures.

Don't blame us...
I iive in Sacramento myself. Blame the fact that none of the TV stations in the market want anything more than a smattering of games.

Have your marketing Dept.
push the stations to take on more games. I visit my daughters in Sac a lot and I hate the non-coverage.

That's not TV36's job
They shouldn’t have to market to a place where they aren’t even carried.
It’s the A’s responsibility to negotiate better carriage among their network affiliates. Blame it on the team.

Would contacting CW31 help?
I realize vertigO is probably right about the real source of the problem, but it would sure be nice to do anything I can to fix it.
So it goes.

baseball photos
No, any baseball themed photo. If you have a great shot of your kids playing ball, that’s great.

do you care?
The new bottom of the screen info bar is annoying. The format you had last year (little diamond in lower right corner) was superior, much less obtrusive (when there’s a runner on second, the bottom info bar cuts right through his body… you can only see the top of his helmet: YUCK). The only good thing about the bottom info bar is that it’s not at the top.
Also, could you keep the MPH up just a little longer? I notice it’s often gone by the time I check. Why does that info need to disappear so fast? i can think of no reason it shouldn’t linger long enough for a fan to watch the brief action surrounding the pitch, then check the MPH.
Otherwise, awesome job. I would like to say I get all my action on ACTION 36, but I’d be lying.

Score Strip
Your post shows how difficult our job can be. When I solicited this blog a couple of years ago for suggestions for our telecasts, the first thing most people mentioned is that they didn’t like the box in the lower right but preferred the strip.
As for the pitch speed, when we get it (we don’t always control the availability of the radar), I’ll try to make that stay up a bit longer.
And though I appreciate the Action36 mention, we no longer use that as a station identifier. We’re just plain old TV36 now.

wow thanks for the reply
I remember that post, and I’m hugely grateful that you didn’t put the strip at the top (I remember posting back then that the strip at the top made me feel “claustrophobic”). I’m surprised that people didn’t like the little right corner diamond, I thought it was perfect.
I think it’s outstanding that you bother to consult with the fans on this site. You deserve a raise. And TV36 will always be Action36 to me (it’s the only station that isn’t in Spanish that my TV receives well!).

Put the games in HD and you'll get my photos
Sorry to say, it appears as if it’s the same crap product.

Hi Def
Wow, I guess all the hard work we do to put these games on has been reduced to just not fulfilling your need for hi-definition.
So let me take a moment to fill you in on what it takes to do Hi Def. First, I need to tell you that we’d like nothing more than to do the games in hi def. But understand that the cost of the equipment and transmission is nearly double what a standard def telecasts costs.
Our friends at Comcast, who do a great job, have the luxury of getting subscriber fees from you every month. It’s part of your cable or satellite bill. That’s millions of dollars per month before they sell even one commercial.
TV stations like KICU subsist only on advertising revenue. We can’t raise the rates to advertisers because of high definition so we need to find advertisers who are willing to underwrite the additional cost.
Comcast is even more formidable now that they have “eliminated the middle man.” They are both programmer and distributor.
If the FCC would allow local TV stations to charge cable companies even a modes per month fee, you can be assured you would not only get the A’s in hi def but all other programming as well. Sadly, that will probably never happen, even though it puts commercial TV stations at a clear disadvantage.

Maybe it's my old eyes, but...
...HD is way over-rated.
Some read stats. Others actually watch the game.

Umm, what's with all the negativity?
This is the 2nd “if you do this, I’ll submit photos..” post. MW came to AN with a fun contest that might be of interest to ANers. While he’s been kind enough to solicit our input about broadcast details in the past, that really isn’t the point of this diary. I’m sure that he would be interested to hear constructive thoughts, but your post just comes across as incredibly rude.

I agree with you
Batgirl,
I agree with you. And I thought long and hard about even mentioning the Snapfish contest on AN. But I was in a pickle and needed some help. And since I’ve seen some terrific baseball pictures here in the past I thought I would be forgiven for my indiscretion.

Well, I'm glad you posted this diary
I think it’s a fun contest and hopefully I’ll come up with something to sumbit. Especially considering I’ve been shut out of winning the “dress your pets” photo contest! I think this posting is totally appropriate for AN, you’ve done nothing wrong. Just because a few members have misplaced their politeness, I hope you wouldn’t hesitate from posting such things again.

More TV in Reno
What can we do about getting more of your broadcasts on our local affiliate in Reno, NV?
In the past we have enjoyed many, many A’s games on TV, but this year we are “un-enjoying” many reruns of, ahem, other programming.
Do you know who we can contact in Northern Nevada to request more games?

Bad signal in Richmond
Would anyone more knowledgeable than I be able enlighten me as to why it’s such a bad 36 reception around here where I live? Ch. 36 is fuzzy for me, it’s hard to enjoy anything on that channel…

Next Year, It'll Be Better
In many parts of the Bay Area, the cure for fuzzy TV is to buy a digital tuner box.. if you can get a digital over-the-air signal, you won’t get fuzziness… but you might get nothing instead of fuzziness. Some folks with modest multi-path distortion (fuzziness/ghosting) on analog TV have complained that they need an outdoor antenna for over-the-air digital TV.
In anticipation of next February’s cutover to all-digital over-the-air TV, the Federal government has been giving out coupons for SDTV tuner boxes… not sure if they’ve all been given out yet (there’s a limit to the number of coupons available). There are also HDTV tuner boxes, but you need an HD-capable TV to use one and most of those have their own HDTV tuners these days… and the A’s aren’t going to be HD on TV 36 anyway.
Unfortunately, Richmond is far enough away from TV 36’s transmitter… antennaweb.org (a great place for information about over-the-air TV) says about 40 miles… that the antenna you’d need to get their digital signal (now on Channel 52) ... a medium multi-directional outdoor antenna… would get their analog signal at least as well. They are one of the stations that plans to shift their original channel to digital next February, and antennaweb.org predicts that a small multi-directional antenna would work at that point. Note that nearby tall buildings and other obstructions can mess things up… if you feed antennaweb.org your exact address, they can give a more accurate estimate (and you have the opportunity to not give them your contact information… I didn’t).

Thanks!
That answers a lot, as well as why I can’t get NBC as well (you’d think something big like that would have a strong signal everywhere).
I do have a HDTV, so once the switch goes to digital, that should solve my problems. Right now I get the NBC “HD” feed via the old antenna, but it craps out as well when my dad uses the massage chair. Better than nothing I guess.
