Open Game Thread: Game 34 - Orioles vs. A's

Baltimore Orioles at Oakland Athletics, May 5, 2008 7:05 PM PDT

The surprising A's take on the surprising O's in an early season matchup of Davids.  The A's send out Dana Eveland who is sporting a 3-2 record and a 3.67 ERA to take on Garrett Olson who has a 1-0 record and a 2.70 ERA.  Olson will only be making his second start this year but he pitched really well in his opening start and pitched well in Triple-A all of last year.

Eveland is coming off his worst outing of the year last time out against the Angels, giving up six earned runs.  Up until that point, he'd been pretty damned impressive.

Olson is a left-handed pitcher, so we're seeing the A's super funky nasty righty lineup:

Suzuki
Ellis
M Sweeney
Thomas
E Brown
Cust
Crosby
Murphy
Davis

Cust's hot streak lands him in the super funky nasty righty lineup.  It takes a special and funkalicious dude to make it into that lineup batting from the left-hand side.

The O's send out the following lineup, sans Miguel Tejada who is now in Houston:

Roberts
Markakis
Mora
Huff
Millar
R Hernandez
Jones
Payton
L Hernandez

Old friends Ramon "Walk-Off Bunt" Hernandez and Jay Payton come back to the Coliseum.  I still have fond memories of Ramon and probably always will.

LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!

I know, it's really bizarre.

The only think I can think of is that they’re planning to dump Bad Sweeney or Davis when Buck comes back from his rehab assignment, and so they’re giving both of them a lot of playing time before the decision is made.

“Cowboy Up,” Ray. Some guy at work has a giant “Cowboy Up” sticker along his windshield, and it takes all the strength I have not to key his car. Okay, I only feel that way when I don’t take my medication in the morning.

Hi Guys, What Did I Miss?

I just turned on the game, and I see it’s a commercial break. What did I miss?

Anyways, thinking about baseball it occured to me though, Fuck Moneyball! The A’s should ditch their Moneyball concept, and really start getting runners in motion. Maybe some more Hit and Runs. That’s only way to compete with those gritty, pesky Angels.

When he pounds the strike zone he is damn good

He sometimes looks nervous up there, maybe because he has been hammered at the MLB level in the past. He is going to have to trust his stuff, I think he could be above average if he does.

One of the answers is Steve Ontiveros, who had a ridiculous rookie season.

The other depends on minimum IP. Steve Chitren was randomly unhittable one September.
