Open Game Thread: Game 34 - Orioles vs. A's
Baltimore Orioles at Oakland Athletics, May 5, 2008 7:05 PM PDT
The surprising A's take on the surprising O's in an early season matchup of Davids. The A's send out Dana Eveland who is sporting a 3-2 record and a 3.67 ERA to take on Garrett Olson who has a 1-0 record and a 2.70 ERA. Olson will only be making his second start this year but he pitched really well in his opening start and pitched well in Triple-A all of last year.
Eveland is coming off his worst outing of the year last time out against the Angels, giving up six earned runs. Up until that point, he'd been pretty damned impressive.
Olson is a left-handed pitcher, so we're seeing the A's super funky nasty righty lineup:
Suzuki
Ellis
M Sweeney
Thomas
E Brown
Cust
Crosby
Murphy
Davis
Cust's hot streak lands him in the super funky nasty righty lineup. It takes a special and funkalicious dude to make it into that lineup batting from the left-hand side.
The O's send out the following lineup, sans Miguel Tejada who is now in Houston:
Roberts
Markakis
Mora
Huff
Millar
R Hernandez
Jones
Payton
L Hernandez
Old friends Ramon "Walk-Off Bunt" Hernandez and Jay Payton come back to the Coliseum. I still have fond memories of Ramon and probably always will.
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!

I know, it's really bizarre.
The only think I can think of is that they’re planning to dump Bad Sweeney or Davis when Buck comes back from his rehab assignment, and so they’re giving both of them a lot of playing time before the decision is made.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
or perhaps its because Davis is better defensivly

Hi Guys, What Did I Miss?
I just turned on the game, and I see it’s a commercial break. What did I miss?
Anyways, thinking about baseball it occured to me though, Fuck Moneyball! The A’s should ditch their Moneyball concept, and really start getting runners in motion. Maybe some more Hit and Runs. That’s only way to compete with those gritty, pesky Angels.

Swinging at bad pitches wouldn't help the situation

by thejd44 on May 5, 2008 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions
even if it was slightly off the plate (by like 1 inch) you have to swing at that with 2 strikes
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
Nice (OK, more than nice) play by Murphy, BUT....
I really don’t think Suzie Q gets enough credit for what he does behind the plate. He seems to have a jetpack or something (how else can you fly sideways on your knees?)
Speaking of which… It’s past 2000…. Where’s my jet pack?

Take a seat Ellis U were out
Pity you were not ejected
We need someone to give us a chance at hitting
Why can't the A's hit LHP?
It amazes me! Whether against a vet or a Rook, the A’s just cant get runs against LHP! GRRRRR
S&BP > Mile High Mules ............ Like Sharks? http://mvn.com/nhl-sharks/
This being the case which it is
They should all bat like Emil Brown and swing early and often at these type of pitchers
Go A’s
i wish the a's had 9 Emil Brown's in the lineup.
This game would be a blowout.
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
That's the philosophy that has made Mark Buehrle
a star pitcher for the past half-decade.
Those guys WANT you to swing early and often at well-located pitches. That’s how they get through games.

Evening all
I just got home from the movies and was surprised to find that it had gone from 75 and sunny when I left the house to about 48 and cloudy now. No wonder so few people are at the game.
The candy and the baseball all night long :)
Did you see a decent movie? I hardly get excited about any of them these days.

It was part of the San Francisco International Film Festival
A creepy Korean historical drama called Shadows in the Palace.

I wish I could afford to live there. The entertainment alone would
break my bank. We have an employee who lives in SF on 70K but is lucky enough to have a rich wife.

i get on billy as much as the next guy for his blunders...
but he made some pretty sweet trades this offseason.
well really any big enough to get on him about.
maybe Loaiaza. But even that wasn’t so bad since the money was available.
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
I wonder how many times that has been debated?
Seriously… salary dump vs. bad trade is one of the biggest debates EVER on AN.

eric gagne makes more money now
than rhodes made in that entire contract. that signing was only bad on an Oakland scale. not even close to a blunder
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.

Monday Night Baseball
The 2008 Oakland A’s, the last hope for anyone that does not want to cross the Bay for anything.
All Games and Comments are Subject to Blackout
Been gone for a few innings
How many A’s runs did I miss?
...
That many, huh?

Young Moyer keeps um off balance and guessing!
S&BP > Mile High Mules ............ Like Sharks? http://mvn.com/nhl-sharks/
i thought Smith was young Moyer
Eveland has much better stuff than Moyer
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
Moyer and Eveland are very compatable
fastball changeup slurve, not dominating, but cerebral, inside outside up down, and changing speeds
S&BP > Mile High Mules ............ Like Sharks? http://mvn.com/nhl-sharks/
Eveland throws close to 10 mph harder than Moyer
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
Thats why I say YOUNG MOYER
not old moyer
S&BP > Mile High Mules ............ Like Sharks? http://mvn.com/nhl-sharks/
neg
if Moyer was Great he would be a HOFer, good is good, not great
S&BP > Mile High Mules ............ Like Sharks? http://mvn.com/nhl-sharks/
Because one man is Robbed of HOF
does not prove anything about Moyer
S&BP > Mile High Mules ............ Like Sharks? http://mvn.com/nhl-sharks/
Absolutely true
Moyer wasn’t good until he was 30.

Data to support
Moyers ERA+s for through age 28:
80
83
104
82
85
64
He didn’t pitch in the majors at age 29.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
and Eveland is only about 4-5 mph faster as Moyer
is still in the mid 80’s and mid-to-upper 80’s sometimes
S&BP > Mile High Mules ............ Like Sharks? http://mvn.com/nhl-sharks/
I think Moyer would need to have a jetpack attached to his arm to hit 88
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
Eveland really doesn't pitch like Moyer at all
Smith does though.

OK Jack
Swing the bat this time and make contact
I'm just glad the ump let Cust go to 1st on ball 4
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
I'm just relieved the count didn't go to 4-3,
because Cust is a lousy 3-strike hitter.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
Do the O's have a good pen?
I don;t pay attention to them
S&BP > Mile High Mules ............ Like Sharks? http://mvn.com/nhl-sharks/
Can't tell if Olson has been really good
Or if the A’s are just bad vs. LHs. There is a pattern emerging

yeah they've been unlucky on balls to the OF
and lucky on balls in the infield
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
Uhh...
Why not Barton?
"We were s--, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
lol
i’ll never complain our pitcher d again….though i’m not sure if he had covered if they could get him
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
Wow.
That puts our crappy D in perspective, I guess.
