DLD 5/5 Cinco De Mayo Mayo, why no links

I want to be in the running for worst DLD ever, so I have no links, but the DLD should be created for a Monday.  The Rivercats are curently playing and Jeff Baisley has 7 RBI, thanks to a 3 run homer, and a grand slam.  The way Hannahan has hit, or not hit if you like, and his 2nd basemans arm, I wonder if they should give him a chance until Chavy comes back, since Chavy won't be back anytime soon.  Keith Foulke was back on  the mound, gave up 1 run in his inning, and Travis is 0-1 with 2 BB's.

Congratulations.

Worst DLD Ever!

However, did anyone notice that OBA are leading the Majors in the Pythagorean Standings? Can Pythagorus play? More importantly, does he have any real power?

I think he’s two years younger than Frank.

Pythagorean triple =

Hit the ball, run to 1st, continue to 2nd, then cut back straight across the pitcher’s mound to home.

To contribute a few links...

UniWatch on yesterday’s throwbacks.

Is this the right shade of green? Seems it might be a bit darker than the jerseys.

Jack Cust == AL Player of the Week. Interesting that the article mentions him twice as a designated hitter, even though he was the left “fielder” all week.

So what's worse

I'd like to see Baisley given a little shot

I mean it can’t hurt. I don’t get the continued reliance on Hannahan. Both Murphy and Baisley are young enough that they could hypothetically take a step forward, but with JackHan what you see is what you get. And I get that we’re competing right now, and if Hannahan were actually hitting well that would be more than enough justification. But he isn’t, so what do you have to lose?

Can't argue with that

Ever since I joined the Paul Thomas fan base-I couldn’t resist those puppy dog eyes-the jackass quotient has gone through the roof. Throw in grover and xbx, and it’s one of the most virulent quotients of jackasses east of Fenway and north of Westwood.

Hannahan

The only player on the A’s with a BABIP lower than Ellis is Hannahan. He’s sitting at a really strong 30% LD rate. The guy is hitting the ball really well, he’s just really unlucky so far.

by MrIncognito on May 5, 2008 4:48 PM PDT   0 recs

Wow, no kidding

His PrOPS is well over .900…

A 30% LD rate isn’t sustainable for anyone, but it’s ridiculous that his BABIP is actually lower than his line drive rate.

Also looking at PrOPS, Cust’s PrOPS is over 1.000. That stat, at least, thinks the A’s offense is going to improve a fair amount.

For prospect nerds: Bryan Smith in BP chat

Five of 85 questions concerned the A’s. If one of the Q’s was yours, own up! (Link here.) And if you know anything about Beane scouting Cahill personally, please speak up, because it’s news to me and I’m inclined to think he’s thinking of someone else, as he suggests. For those still too cheap or poor to subscribe:

Ryan (NY): How would you rank the Stockton trio of Anderson, Cahill, and De Los Santos – and has your ranking of those 3 changed since the season began?

Bryan Smith: I’ll say this: Trevor Cahill has done everything to earn consideration as one of the minor leagues better pitching prospects. He might very well be a top ten overall guy next year. Some credit for his draft goes to Billy Beane, if I recall correctly. Didn’t Beane personally cross-check Cahill three times, or am I thinking of another guy. Anyway, he’s at the top, and I think the next two are tied for the moment. De Los Santos gets more than a month before falling to the bottom, but I believe a little more in what Anderson is selling than I did six weeks ago.

Gray (Chicago): Where does James Simmons stand in the pecking order of A’s pitching prospects?

Bryan Smith: He stands as the first in line of reaching the Major Leagues. Since they are all on the same team, I think ranking them is sort of a strange thing to do. Simmons probably has a realistic chance of pitching with the A’s as early as August, especially if Smith/Eveland regress and/or Blanton gets traded. He just looks too consistently good for the Texas League right now. He’ll be up first, and if he pitches well, Simmons won’t have to worry when the A’s have an in-flux of those great High-A arms, I’ll say that.

oira61 (San Francisco): Bryan: James Simmons is ahead of Gio Gonzalez? Based on your comment about de los Santos, does this mean the A’s got next to nothing for Swisher?

Bryan Smith: Uh oh, I feel like what I wrote got contorted a bit. I certainly didn’t mean to imply … that. My comment about de los Santos was that he shouldn’t be clumped below Brett Anderson because of a bad month. Simmons and Gio are probably on equal timetables to help the Majors. I know KG saw and heard great reports concerning Gio in Spring Training, so I’m not closing any doors. I think they got good value for Swisher, it’s just going to take some time.

ray (oakland): how legit is the stockton trio of Doolittle/Carter/SUlentic?? Sulentic is having a bounce back season and one of the youngest players in cal league at 20 yrs old, does he jump bacck into top prospect territory?

Bryan Smith: I’m not ready to anoint Sulentic as a top 100 prospect again, because he’s had some low lows in his short career. But he certainly looks more at home in California, which is true for most of this roster. Carter is the same player he’s always been, and Doolittle looks like a very astute draft pick. It’s too bad he has to split some time at first, though, because Ports fans are missing out on a truly gifted defensive player.

mike (stockton): with the hype, of that stockton staff, what do you think about 2nd tier guys like Italiano/Mazzaro/Leon/Banwart etc? would it be fair to say, A’s might have the best group of pithcing prospects other than Tampa Bay?

Bryan Smith: It’s a pretty astounding group of pitchers, and in terms of raw depth, it surpasses the Rays. Tampa gets credit for Davis and McGee and Hellickson, but the A’s have so many guys with the bounce backs of Italiano and Mazzaro. The latter doesn’t surprise me much, as he wasn’t bad last season, he just needed a better park and better defense or his prolific sinker.

by Faust on May 5, 2008 5:16 PM PDT   0 recs

Pretty frustrating that Doolittle is left-handed

If he was a realistic candidate to play third base, he would probably be the #3 prospect in the organization at this point.

And that’s not even mentioning his 9 years shorter life expectancy…

Goddess, genius and everything else

I think you’re right about her love of the Giants, but I can’t hold it against her because (a) she is, as you have pointed out, a goddess, and (b) her fandom definitely predates the Barry/Pac Bell era.

The only two reasons I can think of for her non-stardom are (a) she’s not hawt in the conventional sense, and (b) she doesn’t seem that interested in limiting herself to a specific style or sound of music, which a company could have her churn out year after year. Barbara has always seemed to play whatever music she wants with whomever she wants to play it with, and in addition to loving her music I really admire her for that.

Travis Buck playing Centerfield for Sacramento

Which could indicate what the A’s might do with him when he gets back. In the Minors, he played Corner Outfield, not Center. That he is playing Center in his rehab assignment tells me one of several things;

Either the A’s are thinking of using Buck as their Centerfielder when he gets back in place of Denorfia, Davis and Sweeney, which is logical since Brown and Cust obviously can’t play Center.

Because CarGon is on the DL, the Cats needed a CF (but Blasi is still there, and Putnam can play CF as well, so maybe not).

Or they are just trying to get Buck some flexability because of a and b.

I would like Buck and CarGon to be called up in about a week or two when CarGo gets off the DL, and take over Center and Right field, with Cust in Left when he is hot, and platooning with Brown or Denorfia when he is cold.
