East Bay late 80's, Boston 2001 to now -- who do you root for?
Hey, so I need to ask some A's fans this. I grew up in the East Bay in the late 1980s/early 1990s and had the pleasure of attending many A's games while growing up. I have always claimed the A's as my # 1 baseball team. But see, I have been living in Boston since 2001 - and yes, I try to make it to Fenway when the A's are in town and I do sport my A's hat. But if you live in Boston, its hard not to get caught up in the Red Sox (I own 3 Red Sox hats to my 1 A's hat). I followed the Red Sox through the dark Grady Little years and celebrated both the 2004 & 2007 Championships. I can name nearly every player on the Red Sox 2008 team but sadly can't say the same about the A's (Billy Beane seems to trade all of my favorites away).
Do I defect to Red Sox Nation? It looks like I may be in Boston for the long haul, but it's hard to let go of my childhood team. While I may know the Red Sox team better, I doubt I can ever root against the A's. I am so curious to hear what other A's fans have to say - esp those of you who moved away from CA.

NEVER
I would never abandon my A’s no matter. I lived in downtown Toronto for 4 years and I remained an A’s fan. Things did not work out when I moved back to norcal so now I am back in the middle of nowhere, southwestern ontario. I am about halfway between Toronto and Detroit now…. A’s fan I remain.
I think that the only other team that I own a hat for is the Expos, and that is because my wife has some French Canadian heritage….....

Amen to that
Live in Boston, too. Only Sox fans are obnoxious enough to make you hope the Yankees win. The most put upon fans in the world, so they think. Best fans in the world? I remember the late 80s when they would rarely sell out any games.
As far as I’m concerned, even buying one Sox hat makes you a traitor. If it were an NL team you might have a small argument.

Is there a question here?
The question is, when/if you have kids, do you allow them to root for the local team. In my case, even though it causes ostracization at times… NO!

Who would you root for in an ALCS?
Boston or Oakland? ‘Nuff said.
I’ve been in LA for about six years, and I like to watch the Lakers. Coming down in ‘02 I hated them, being a Kings fan. I still like the Kings more, but living in LA, you can’t help but follow the Lakers. But when it comes down to head-to-head games, I still go for Sac.
Baseball’s a little tougher. I could sort of stand watching the Angels at first, but now I only like watching for Vlad. Maybe if there was an NL team that I didn’t despise (Fucking Kirk Motherfucking Gibson), I could follow them. I could see rooting for another AL team outside the division.
But if you would root for the Red Sox over the A’s in an ALCS? They could have you.

Raised as an A’s – Giants fan… but always leaned closer to the A’s. When I was old enough to really decide/care, went all the way with the A’s.
Now I live in Washington, DC and I am surrounded by fans of the Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Phillies, etc…. but come on man! Boston? Of all the teams to make your second team, Boston??
In my opinion, that’s pretty weak. I would have gone with a National League team, something neutral… never Boston… I personally root for the Giants, Mets and Cubs (and if they are playing each other, Giants)... but in the end, it really doesn’t matter what happens in the National league to me because the A’s are my #1.
That’s me.

Living in D.C.
Longtime A’s fan growing up, I went to Jersey for college and now work in D.C. I have had to deal with a ton of Phillies, Mets, Orioles, Yankees and (dear God!) Nats fans and I think it’s very important to keep your identity.
It’s ok to root for a National League team, but picking up a team that prevents the A’s from reaching the World Series is totally wrong. I may never get back to California to live, but my allegiances have been built and nurtured. With the way that Billy keeps things exciting and competitive there’s no way I’d ever turn to another team.
Look at who you get to root for: A small market team that continues to reinvent itself to stay competitve and get to the playoffs while fighting the ivory towers of Boston, NY, and LAA (haha). They continue to bring up young talent and put all of the “analysts” in the position of having picked it wrong again for Oakland.
I love nothing more than walking around sporting my A’s gear. CMON!!!! We’re the Green and Gold BAY-BEE!!!! What a sweet color combo.
Also if you get MLB.TV you get to watch just about every game live because you’re out of market.
I choose to keep my affection for the A’s because they’re the non-traditional team that gets to sport that plucky demeanor of David vs. Goliath while wearing white cleats. You have to choose for yourself: do you want to be associated with being “from Boston?”
It's just more exciting with Billy Beane running the team.

I feel your pain.
I had the reverse situation. Growing up in Boston you learn to love the Red Sox, and hate the Yankees and the NL. When the A’s came to Oakland, I was happy because I finally had an AL team to support. I am still a closet fan of the Sox, except when they play the A’s. Red Sox fans in Boston are passionate and knowledgeable. Prior to 04, the Boston fans were fun to be around, unlike Yankee and Indians fans. After the WS win, the ones who live outside of Boston and go to other stadia became and still are obnoxious. Have fun being a Sox fan, but never forget your roots.

"I followed the Red Sox through the dark Grady Little years ..."
Are you kidding me?! You make it sound like you paid your dues or something … the Sox can have you. Yes, by all means, be a Red Sox fan. Because the reasons you’ve listed are the primary reasons people become Red Sox fans … the team is good, lots and lots of people who no little about baseball decide to root for the team they hear about all the time, and ESPN shills for Boston endlessly.
It doesn’t surprise me … not at all … because 95% of the people you see wearing Red Sox gear (especially west of the Mississippi) jumped on the wagon in ‘04. So you’re no different. By all means, go Red Sox!!!! What a sell-out.

Finally something Athletics and Angels fans can agree on
The Boston Red Sox are the new New York Yankees. They overspend on aging veterans, swindle their fans (you have to PAY to join “Red Sox Nation?”), and have a fanbase derived entirely from people who saw Fever Pitch. It’s disgusting. I live in Boston, and the town’s insanity over their post-2004 baseball team is the only reason I started caring about baseball in the first place. I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway. I chose the Angels thanks to geography (I’m from LA), but I could have just as easily chosen the A’s, or the Twins, or the Rays. And now that I’ve chosen a team, I’m sticking with it, because I’m not a rampant bandwagoneer.
You pick a team and you live and die with that team. Otherwise where’s the fun when they finally win? Judging by the teams I’ve chosen, it’s probably gonna be a while before I see any of them win anything (Kings Stanley Cup in ‘09? LOL OMG JK), but when they finally do, it’ll mean so much more to me.

Jack Nicholson finds fun in cheering for the Yankees and Lakers. I'm guessing he was
probably a Patriots fan up until the end of the Super Bowl. Tom Hanks was a Red Sox fan in 2004. I have plenty of friends who are front-runners. In some perverse way people derive enjoyment out of cheering for the winning teams. I don’t get it and I actually despise those types. So to Mattbarnes, the guy who posted this diary, get lost and cheer for the Red Sox. While you’re at it, I heard ESPN likes to show Red Sox hilites.

Isn't that weird??!!
I have no idea how people do that, but they do. Couldn’t find a Sacramento Kings fan to save your life until they got decent in ‘99 … then every soccer-mom, bartender, and janitor in Nor Cal wore purple one day and swore “I’ve always loved this team.” Now they’re all gone again.
Same with the Sox … now, don’t get me wrong, I respect the hell out of the Sox fans who’ve been with ‘em forever—they’ve paid their dues and are getting their reward … but again, most you see nowadays bought their hats a couple years ago, saw Fever Pitch with their dorky boyfriend (or girlfriend), and couldn’t tell you who the hell Marty Barrett, Boomer Scott, or Tony Conigliaro were. Shameful.

i was in a similar situation to you
except that, you know, i’m not a totally lame bandwagoner…
i lived in the bay area in the bash brothers era but my favorite team was the red sox. then i moved to boston, realized sox fans are all obnoxious d-bags, and became an a’s fan.
if moving to boston had the opposite effect on you, it’s possible you may be an obnoxious d-bag yourself (also based on your non-sarcastic use of the term “Red Sox Nation”).
goodbye.

It happens the way it happens
I have moved twice as an adult – from milwaukee to atlanta in the 80s and to the bay area this year. I was a rabid brewers fan and actively despised the braves my first years in the atl, particularly the bandwagon jumpin’ lame-os who got on board once the braves got good in ‘91. But…time passes and you get interested in some kid who turns a bunch of raw talent into a major league career – a ron gant type – or you see a pair of pitchers come along, one a wildass fireballer and one a crafty little lefty, and they’re both overmatched and getting their brains beat then all of a sudden they turn into smoltz and glavine who have these epic, multi-generational careers. Meanwhile, the old team develops its own trajectory, and there you are, a braves guy.
Seems like it would be even harder to remain an a’s fan from long distance, since any young studs who do come along are going to be harvested and recycled into even younger studs – when frank thomas is your “old-school continuity” guy, wow, that’s a team with shallow roots! Of course that understates the a’s appeal. What most of the people on this site – definitely including me – find appealing is the “idea” of the a’s – the idea that it’s possible to outsmart the system by finding guys whose value is obscured by some cosmetic and fundamentally trivial failings. (ok – a 5 run error is not exactly trivial or cosmetic).
Anyway, just hang out and let it happen – it’s definitely not an ethical or moral dilemma, just a fun way to while away your tv watchin’ hours!

I find that argument to be bogus
I was stationed near Seattle while I was in the Navy from 2000-2003, and I never fathomed jumping on the Mariners bandwagon (and they were a pretty good team back then with an awesome ballpark). I don’t think that it difficult to stay loyal to a team when you move, In fact It made me a bigger A’s fan, just because they were a part of home that I could hold onto while I was so far away. I don’t think you get to “pick” your teams, for most of us, its something that your born into. Your team is a direct reflection of what your family and friends are while you were growing up. I grew up in Vallejo in the 1980’s and my neighborhood was A’s territory, so that made me an A’s fan. Now I can see how you may be able to “adopt” another team along the way do to a change in your residence; but never a team that plays in the same division as your home team. That’s why I could never adopt the Mariners, they were in the AL west and in direct contention to the A’s. I myself adopted the Diamondbacks as my NL team in 2001, because I always thought that Randy Johnson was rockin when I was a kid, and I wanted to see anyone beat the Yankees, after our tragic defeat in ALDS. Now that Byrnes and Haren are both with Arizona, it makes it even more sweet, because they were two of my favorite’s when they were in Oakland. Anyway, the bottom line is that the author of this diary was never a real A’s fan to begin with, and im sure that the Red Sux still have room for one more on top of their bandwagon. If your lucky they might even let you ride shotgun…

You've already made the transition, Anakin
Clue #1 – You own more Red Sox hats than A’s hats
Clue #2 – You celebrated the 2004+2007 titles.
No self-respecting A’s die hard would ever fall under either, much less both categories. (I can understand 1 cap to keep up with appearances locally, but 3?!). If you truly wanted to hold onto the A’s as your #1, you would’ve made the effort in spite of the espn juggernaut to stay in the know.
That said, if you’re happier as a Red Sox fan, by all means enjoy being one, even if it means you have to absorb derision from the rest of us here. Sometimes ya want to be happier with the hot, shallow model girlfriend, instead of the steady girl-next-door type.
P.S. I’m an lifetime Bay Area local, so that kinda biases things. I also had the late 80s A’s first attach itself to my rooting consciousness, but I also stuck with the team through the dark 90s.

thanks for the comments...
I should explain a bit more. First of all, I am a woman married to a die hard Red Sox fan who bought me 2 of my hats and the third was a freebie giveaway. I never bought a Red Sox hat for myself. In fact, the only Red Sox gear I ever bought for myself was a Johnny Damon tshirt when I first moved here because I rooted for him when he played for the A’s and I moved to Boston around the same time he did. I don’t know if I would categorize myself as a die-hard A’s fan per se, but my childhood best friend’s family of 3 had 4 season tickets to the A’s and I was regularly invited to A’s games including the Battle of the Bay World Series games in 1989. Attending any string of A’s games in the late 1980s makes one an A’s fan – I don’t care what anyone on this site has to say.
I would never root for Boston to beat Oakland in an ALDS or ALCS game, so I guess that means I will always default to the A’s.
All of you who think the Red Sox are a team of aging veterans obviously don’t know the team – Ellsbury, Pedroia, Youklis, & Paplebon are good examples of a youthful Boston team. Also note, the Red Sox did not retain Pedro or Johnny Damon as they were aging.
If I do end up raising kids out here, hopefully they can grow up appreciating the A’s. My parents still live in the East Bay, so I am sure I will continue to visit and can take the kids to the Coliseum…or Fremont if that is indeed where the A’s will end up.
Thanks for the comments. And thanks for the open-mindedness and support :)
