DLD 5/3 E:60 eat your heart out
Miguel Tejada promises HR for sick kid, delivers
It's very nice to see more news like this instead of the drivel they produced recently that they tried to pass off as hard journalism. Steroids and age scandals might have led to a dirty era of the game, but baseball is still baseball-- And even some of the players with shadows of cheating (on both counts) play with an extreme love of the game and extreme goodwill for people around them.
To me this signals the end of a saga that was the closer's inverse of Huston Street's current criticism. In Street's case, he is being vilified as a result of a small sample of fly balls going yard. Relievers can have both "lucky" seasons and "unlucky" seasons due to the small sample of innings you see out of them in any given season. Turnbow's magical 2005 and half-magical 2006 were clearly "lucky"(which I sort of remember a lot of people expecting at the time, it just took him a bit of extra time to regress to the mean). Street's mean to regress to is a very good mean, and when he gets whacked around for a few innings, the first assumption should be "he's probably unlucky".

I like weekend DLDs
Especially since so many great newspaper stories are published on Saturdays.
Pioneer woman sportswriter inducted into Hall of Fame It’s great she is still alive to appreciate the honor.
This sportswriter, on the other hand, didn’t live to have his secret exposed; that he faked part of his resume.
Umpire Kerwin Danley, hit in the head by a pitch a week ago, talks to the LA Times.
Thirty years ago today, the first piece of unsolicited commercial e-mail was sent out, to the fury of hundreds of recipients.

BP's Postseason Odds..
Have us winning the division:
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/ps_odds.php
90 W, 72 L, 65% Chance we win the West.
Everyone else is slated to finish sub .500.
Woo!
70% chance to make the playoffs, too. Only the Diamondbacks have a better chance.
It doesn’t look so good in the ELO-adjusted and PECOTA-adjusted versions, though. In those, we fall back to earth and the Angels are favored over us by quite a bit.
As far as I can tell, no one at BP is actually claiming that the unadjusted version has better predictive power. Indeed, I rather suspect they believe it doesn’t.

both have their problems
ELO would be better if teams were assigned preseason ELOs, but it seems everyone just starts at 1500. and depending on the K-factor, ELO can fluctuate greatly within such a narrow bandwidth. PECOTA is sometimes just flat wrong, and is not adjusted to take into account current season performances which can vary greatly from PECOTA projections.
From as far as I can tell, PECOTA the A’s were projected at .494 by PECOTA, and the pecota adjusted just takes their record now and projects them to play at .494 for the rest of the season. It would be nice if they either a.) updated PECOTA in season or b.) had some projection based on PECOTA weighted with current performances.
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
Problems with those simulations.

i'm not convinced that boston is all that much better than Tampa Bay

A's fan Derby pick has to be Gayego
on the name factor. And he’s the pick of the Chron’s Larry Stumes.
But I’m boxing a Trifecta with Pyro, Colonel John, and Visionaire, and sprinkling some Win-Place-Show money on each of them individually. I’m hoping for a furious closing rally by Pyro to make for a super exciting finish at the wire.
It’s almost noon. Time to fix myself the day’s first julep.

Who or what is "E:60"?
Is that our team total errors on the season?
Is it an elaborately accessorized emoticon?

Holy crap
The horse that finished second in the Kentucky Derby broke both front legs after the race and was euthanized on the spot.

Despite Albert being the genuine sociopath that people mistakenly believe Bonds to be, I was always a big fan. Man. Could. Hit.

He really could.
His surly personality has kept him from having his career appreciated for the fine one that it was.
Actually he was unsuccesful in his attempt to run down some kids who had egged his house
Unlike some Yankee Fans
And apparently Chavez wants to DH

I’m Emiling that to Poppy.

What's Emiling?
Like, are you going to drive that in to Poppy? Here I was thinking Emil Brown was being underappreciated, even after his epic praising post, and then you go off and give him his own verb.

Tonight's game will feature HRs from
Frank Thomas and Kurt Suzuki.
The A's colors are green and gold.
As long as we get away
from the letters E and K, I’ll be fine

17 for me. Of course, I guessed on at least half of the correct ones.

I got a 19
Anyone see Helvetica? I thought it was interesting and I know nothing about typography nor graphic design.
Helvetica was an awesome film.
I recommend it to anyone who likes documentaries, even if you don’t know anything about type. The director said that it would be a good date film. I think he may have been joking, but I actually think it really would.
I saw it at the anniversary screening at TypeCon 2007 last summer here in Seattle, complete with a dedication by the local Swiss consul and Q&A afterward with the director (when he made the “date movie” remark) and a few “stars” from the show. It was quite a trip to see it in an auditorium full of type geeks, who laughed at all the in-jokes.
I spent most of the 1980s working as a typographer, so I’m a bit of a type geek, but nothing compared to my brother and a friend of mine, who are truly two of the geekiest type geeks in the country.

I'm fascinated by what other people find fascinating.
I love documentaries for this reason and Helvetica opened up a whole world to me that I never knew existed.
19 as well
I had some lucky guesses (though my guess correct percentage was probably close to 0.25) but it felt good when I really knew some of them.
I asked my staff to take the test; they all assured me they passed

I got a 22 on my first try
I expected better, I did 6 years in newspaper/yearbook design and I’ve seen most of those fonts before :(
Scored 30 now...
But I know the first try is more accurate. It’s much easier to score higher on retries because they run the same pool of fonts and it’s fairly easy to remember which ones you got wrong before.
25. But I was a graphic communication major.

If it turned out that little Jacob Scott didn’t actually have muscular dystrophy, and Miguel walked into his hospital room all calm-like, and then sprang the kid’s actual medical charts on him.

Blame the girlfriend
Braden said he’ll cut it whenever his girlfriend gets tired of it
Seriously, is there ever any other reason why a guy cuts (or doesn’t cut) his hair?

I don't normally correct spelling
but in this case it’s a rather significant difference. A fiancée is a future wife. A fiancé is a future husband.

Bobby Crosby -- who knew?
(pardon my French—actually it was a typo….and it’s far from the only meaning-shifting typo or error found on AN.)
WTG Crosby - the man has cajones.
That might explain why he gets hurts so often—his girlfriend/fiancee/wife beats on him for disagreeing with her.
I'm just surprised she's let it get to this point.

Me too
Maybe this will be like Hudson+Mulder, where one trade was bad but we all say, “Yeah, but you have to combine it with the other trade, which was really good, so over all we did well.”
