A's to Fremont: Grand Slam Event May 3rd *Pics of Barton/R.Sweeney Added*
I'm on the mailing list for A's to Fremont so I was wondering if anyone here actually heard of the A's to Fremont Healthcare Grand Slam event and is going? Sorry I posted this so last minute, I remembered this was tomorrow and I came on to see who's talking about it, but after I searched back a bit it doesn't look like anyone's actually mentioned this yet. I apologize if this is a duplicate post.
From the e-mail -
Hi A's To Fremont Supporters! Just a reminder! Don't forget to attend the First Annual Health Care Grand Slam scheduled for this Saturday, May 3, 2008 between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the Washington West parking lot at Washington Hospital 2500 Mowry Ave in Fremont! The A's and Cisco have partnered with Washington Hospital Healthcare System to co-sponsor this Free Fair! At this event you will be able to Meet current A's players and team owners, take home autographs, caps, and T-shirts, Experience Cisco's future medical technologies, learn how to cook healthy and nutritious meals from Chefs from Bon Appetit! You will even be able to step inside a fast pitch cage and clock your delivery, while you hang out with Stomper!
--
Edit: Pics from the event!
The players first arrive on the scene. Just for the record, Sweeney had on Prada sunglasses and True Religion jeans, and Barton had Versace sunglasses and Seven for All Mankind jeans.
Barton plays with a puppy! Later on, someone had their dog's A's shirt autographed and put their dog on the table. Everyone was very happy to do so :)
Lew Wolff with some guy (I have no clue who this is, but I think he said he's a tech lead for Cisco?)

Everytime I hear
Fremont and A’s in the same sentence, I feel sick.

I'd feel more sick...
...if I heard the A’s and Las Vegas, Portland, New Orleans or anywhere else they could potentially move if they weren’t staying in the Bay Area.

I look at it this way
Oakland isn’t working out for one reason or another. We could go around all day long about why, who’s to blame and so on, but this is where we are.
I would take Fremont, Pleasanton or anywhere else in the East Bay over losing the team entirely and I would hope most people who really are A’s fans would agree.

Pleasanton would be so much worse
It gets insanely hot out there. Fremont will be unpleasantly warm for some day games, but tolerable for those of us who are fans of the fog. And at least Fremont has some excellent Afghan, Chinese, and Indian food.
The candy and the baseball all night long :)

I bet
that Indian food in the hot heat of India is pretty delicious too…

Yeah. I've worked in the TriValley area for almost a decade now...
...except for about a year or so about three miles from home. Livermore, San Ramon, Dublin, Pleasanton. The heat sucks balls and would probably require – believe it or not – a retractable roof stadium.

Wow, complaining about the heat in the TriValley that's pretty sad.

When it's consistently in the 90s and has spells where it...
...pushes 100, yes – that’s uncomfortable.
It doesn’t have to be Phoenix or Houston or the humid parts of the country for it to suck during a day game.

BS
For San Ramon, where I lived for 18 years, the average high in August, the hottest month of the year, is 76. Pleasanton is significantly higher at 89 but aren’t most games in the evenings anyways. But seriously a retracable roof for an average high of 89 seems a little silly.
by methodrampage on May 3, 2008 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And San Ramon hasn't been kicked about as a possible site...
...in the past. Dublin/Pleasanton off the highway has.
They could get around a roof anyway in the hypothetical of a ballpark there, but it’d probably mean fewer day games during the week and on Saturdays. Most people want to be comfortable and Pleasanton’s average high for August of 89 is right in line with what I said. Evenings would be better for games in that case.

Day Games
For 2008 the A’s have 7 day games scheduled for July and August. Wow, to think a major league baseball franchise might subject their fans to 7 day games at 89 is completely unacceptable. In my opinion the mid 80s are perfectly comfortable.
by methodrampage on May 3, 2008 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Go look up how many home day games the A's...
...have typically played in a season and I think this year you’ll see that number is dropping a bit. I believe it would drop further if they moved to the other side of the foothills.
Mid-80s? Not bad. Fremont will have that. We’re not talking mid-80s, though.

Weather in Fremont
I’ve been in Fremont for the past 8 years, and I don’t think the weather is ever really that bad. Only a few days each year the temp hits 100.
That said, day games in 90-100 degree weather sucks like no other… I only go to those games if I can get tickets in the shade.

Great pics!
I heard about this event last week. Don’t remember where or when i heard about it.
Speaking of food, went to a great Pakistani restaurant yesterday in the tenderloin called Lahore Karahi. It’s a hole in the wall but the food is good and cheap. Add it to your cheap eats list.

I would not renew my season tickets for the A's in Fremont. I think
that drive from up hear plus all the access issues to the park will turn it into a nightmare.

I was worried the A's were going to move to the planet Mercury
because then they’d hire Dusty Baker, with his theory of the genetics of racial tolerance for heat.
Then I decided to stop worrying about crazed relocation scenarios whose only purpose is to instill a baseless fear among fans.

If the Fremont deal falls through, and the A's decide to stay in Oakland,
are there any issues with extending the lease at the Coliseum? I thought I read something about a remodeling for the Raiders.
by alamedaman on May 3, 2008 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
to be honest
Las Vegas, New Orleans, and to some degree Portland own plumetting real estate markets. I dont think Lew would relocate a team there. Plus, Las Vegas (city) will laugh at you when you ask them to produce money for a stadium-everyone in LV produces money for the city, not the other way around. They dont need your sales tax revenue.
When are the Marlins going to move?

So. About the actual EVENT, Melody.
Let us know if you went, how it was, who was there… :)
I have [null set] to say.

It was fun :)
I’m in the middle of uploading a few images!
I stood next to Lew Wolff and no one was by him so I introduced myself. Moments later he was swarmed by event hosts and fans wanting photos. Bench Coach Don Wakamatsu, Daric Barton and Ryan Sweeney signed autographs for over an hour.
More people than I expected were there, considering the event wasn’t all that well publicized. There were lots of giveaways, from bike helmets to A’s caps to shirts and pedometers and game tickets. Washington Hospital was doing various health-related workshops; I saw some people get back massages, and others got pricked for glucose testing. I don’t know how many people there were in support of the A’s actually moving to Fremont, but there were booths out with petitions and cards to fill out urging the move. Stomper was there, and there was a Jolly Jump for kids too.

Oh geez...
Was Daric actually listening to his iPod through one diamond-studded ear while signing autographs?

I find it ironic
that Barton and Sweeney donned the gray road jerseys that say “Oakland” across the front.
by Soaker on May 3, 2008 4:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Funny you mention that
I was talking to a guy running one of the tables (he let me stand at his booth and take pictures) and he was like, “You know it’s really funny they have jerseys on that say Oakland. You’d think they’d wear the ones that say ‘Athletics’ at the least!”
While getting dressed today I actually thought of this so I dropped a “Oakland Athletics” shirt for one that just read “Athletics”.
I think the answer is probably simple though… I’ll bet the home jerseys are back at the stadium, and the handlers brought the alternative road jerseys that weren’t being used. The players only changed into their jerseys after they arrived and changed out of them when they left.

Sure he should
That’s the goal. And everyone should see one as often as possible. It should help them with their motivation.

We don't want their motivation
to be to win a WS with the Angels…
That would be very bad.
