Polarized offense in May

Just looked up A's offense stats for May, and one really strange thing is that everyone is either hitting above 300 (Crosby at 301) or below 230 (Hannahan at 227). Sweeneys, Thomas, Cust, Crosby are hitting, as much as Hannahan, Brown, Ellis, Suzuki, and Barton are not hitting, OK Barton is in a slump of his own compared to the rest. But even counting the part timers, there is just no one hitting average on the team in May. Maybe this is another manifestation of the hot/cold tendencies of A's offense.

I looked up sOPS+ for May
Definition of sOPS+: OPS+ of this split relative to the major league OPS for this split: 100*((split OBP/ML avg. OBP of split) + (split SLG/ML avg. SLG of split) – 1)

Team sOPS+ in May: 94

Hot in May:
Cust 200
R. Sweeney 169
Thomas 168

Pulling their fair share this month:
Crosby 113
Ellis 94
M. Sweeney 92
Hannahan 88

Wish April had never ended:
Brown 59
Suzuki 28
Barton 27

That looks like a pretty normal distribution to me.

I would like to see both Young Sweeney and Buck under Thomas's mentorship for a year

Do you remember how Swisher excelled from Thomas’s mentorship in 2006? Well both old Sweeney and Thomas have been working/talking with Young Sweeney this year and look at him get better and better. I think if we put Buck into that group we will end up with one hell of a outfield in 2009 with Buck, Sweeney and CarGon. We need to keep Thomas on the team for next year to continue their positive influence.

I don't know about keeping Thomas...

I like the idea but personally I think: Cust > Thomas. That may be arguable now but as Thomas gets older you gotta think it will become more of a clear line. Plus the way Thomas is hitting, and has for the last two years now, he might be type-A in the off-season. And I’m not talking about Hepatitis.

I totally understand

But Thomas is a great influence to others in the clubhouse and out on the field it shows up. Cust can hit but that is it. Neither can really play out in the field.

My thoughts are trade Cust at the deadline and bring CarGon up. Let’s have three actualy outfielders in the outfield. With Thomas as the DH he can help all three of our future outfielders grow. Thomas also scares pitchers.. he is the guy who makes anyone batting around him better cause they don’t want to pitch to Thomas with anyone on base, even more so than Cust.

trade

Who’s going to give up anything for Cust?

Someone still in the race who needs a good DH

Not a lot of suitors then

only Tempa looks like they may need to upgrade their DH (Cliff Floyd) and Detroit (Sheffield). Yankees (Matsui), BoSox (Ortiz), Cleveland (Hafner), Chicago (Thome), Angels (Anderson + others) all look set for DH.

Injuries could change that very quickly ...

especially since not one of those guys is on the spry side of 30 and most of them aren’t even close … Thome, Hafner and Anderson also aren’t necessarily better than Cust … though they are all big enough names/contracts that it might not matter.

You never know

I really would like to see all of our young outfielders in our outfield and Cust isn’t a good outfielder.

Come July we don’t know who will be in the races or who they will need and we could sell and actually get better defensively.
