Chavez for 1B in 2008
With Hannahan actually being pretty reasonable at 3B, and Chavez coming off serious back injury, and Daric Barton missing the signs of promise, it seems sort of natural to me to option Barton when Chavez is healthy and to just play Chavez at 1B for the time being. I've been out of town for a week, but checked the roster shakeup thread and didn't really see any discussion of that. It seems like a convenient solution to several problems. Any thoughts?

Chavez is rehabbing as a 3B right now, and if he can manage the position, I say leave him at 3B for the meantime
because Hanahan hasn’t been doing that great, and we have many more 1B options than 3B options. Indeed, we can use Hanahan as a 1B if it is really needed, backing up Sweeney as well as Chavez.
And since we arn’t winning any games anyways, I’d rather have Barton take his licks.

If by convenience you mean
hindering the development of one of your best prospects, hindering the return of Chavez to 3b, and and not taking advantage of a gold glove 3bman.
If Chavez is going to be out there, he might as well go to where he is only a 6 time gold glove winner. While I’m sure he can do adequately at first base, he’s never really played that position and it makes no sense that an average 3bman should stay at 3rd.
The correct move here
would be to move Hannahan over to first base, not Chavez.
If the A’s do opt to send Barton down when Chavez returns, a Hannahan/Sweeney platoon should at least eke out league average production at the position.

This is what I was going to say
Healthy Chavez = top-notch defensive 3B
Hannahan = throws like my mother, no range, limited quickness.
But right now Hannahan should probably be in the lineup.

That makes a lot of sense
I think the front office is going to give Barton till Chavez’s return to figure it out. If by that time he’s still struggling, then I’ll bet he’s the one to go down.

Talk about knee jerk reactions.
Barton will be fine people. The league now knows how to pitch to him and he has to adjust back. Its not easy but he will do it. Two bad months isnt enough to give up on him. Also Hanahan isnt a everyday major league player.
When will then be now? Soon.
I'm sure he will be fine too
In long run he’ll be great of course, but right now he’s approaching the .600 OPS mark and we are talking two months into the season (not like 1 month for Cust). Hannahan is doing fine right now, and the difference in performance between Hannahan and Barton isn’t even close.
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
I just dont see it.
Chavy is the 3rd baseman and nothing is gonna change that. Short of him getting hurt again of course.

I'd cut Herrera...
Guy is just never freaking healthy.
There are some rules about outrighting guys who are injured, though—I don’t know if they would pose a problem. If they did, eh, Gray is nobody’s idea of hot stuff.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Can they put Herrera on the 60-day DL if he's not on the major league roster?
Or would they have to call him up to the majors and then DL him? How does that work?
That would seem to be a way to get him off the 40-man without passing him through waivers.

Ask Beane at AN Day...
I have no idea.

Chavez...
...is one of the top 25 or so defenders in all of baseball, at any position. And he has done so despite basically playing injured for as long as I can remember. If he’s actually healthy, there’s no reason to believe he can’t be just as good as he was before.
Chavez at 1B is simply not going to happen.
speaking of Chavez
he had one of those “ranging far to right to stop smash, then off-balance throw to first” in the game in Sacramento tonight (didn’t get the runner, who beat the throw). You could hear the crowd cheering on the play.
Sweet!
You obviously went. Wish I was there to see Gonzalez’s Grand Slam.

no, I listened on milb.com audio
Also, for the first time I also listened to part of Midland’s game. It was fun listening to the play by play of the prospects we’ve all been reading about. Although Midland lost, Pennington and Guzman very well. HRodriguez sounds like he needs to learn how to pitch (great stuff, not much control).
Then, switching to the Rivercats game the jump in quality of play was very obvious, even on the radio. In both games the play by play announcer was very good. By the way, it sounded like Meyer pitched well. Calero did also, and Ziegler closed without any drama. Denorfia played left field, with Buck in center.
HRod got away with a great fastball in A+ ball
but isnt getting away with it in AA. He needs a 3rd pitch and needs to learn how to pitch. Along with added control. Hes certainly a project that could go boom. But I still see him as a lights out reliever if he falls threw as a starter.
Getting Chavy back cant come soon enough. If he comes off the DL when eligible, its closer than I though. Its less than a week.. on the 27th I believe.
When will then be now? Soon.
Speaking of going boom
Both Brett Anderson and James Simmons went to the DL today…
Well, at least it explains Anderson’s 200 ERA in his last start.

injuries
Any updates on the severity of each injury?
(not that Oakland would ever actually, you know, give out an honest assessment)
nevermind....
...nothing that a visit to Rotoworld couldn’t fix.
Guess I need to re-order my morning web-visits to include Rotoworld prior to AN.
They were late on Simmons news...
He had that dead arm a week ago. His velocity was down and they put him on the 7 day DL. He should be fine. And Anderson thumb isnt a concern for me atleast.

Chavez 1B?
You mention moving Chavez to 1B when he is healthy?
Why in the world would you ever move a 6 time GG winner to another position? If he’s healthy, as you suggest, then it would be a horrible idea. He’s the best defensive 3B on the planet. (That any of us know of at least)
Also, I don’t see why Barton needs to go anywhere, at least for now. It would clear up the 1B/DH logjam a bit, but I don’t think it’s necessary yet.

Very short term move
The idea is they have been slow to bring him pick until he can handle the physical rigors of playing 3B. Bringing him back slowly at 1B would avoid a lot of the physical rigors, get his bat into the lineup, and get Barton’s bat out of the lineup at a time they need that to happen.
Not talking about Eric Chavez being a 1B forever.
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
With Hannahan, and Crosby on the left side, Chavy will be digging more balls out of
the dirt than any 3rd baseman in the bigs anyway.

Re: rickyg
I think that if Chavez is not healthy enough to field grounders at 3B, he won’t be healthy enough at 1B. I think what you’re saying is that the less frequent grounders at 1B would help, right? Well, it could, but if Chavez is healthy, as you said, then it wouldn’t matter where he’s fielding the grounders from. A healthy Chavez at 1B is a waste when you can have a healthy Chavez at 3B. Apparently playing at 80% is not an option, which seems to be what you’re suggesting.
If they want Barton’s bat out of the line up play Mike Sweeney.

Chavez Firstbaseman?? NUTS!
Barton should be getting his at bats. He is the future first baseman for the Oakland A’s (lets hope!) Chavez should focus on getting healthy and training to be a third baseman, his 6 gold gloves is the reason we pay him the11.5 mil a year, though im annoyed with his batting avg. but hey noones perfect .
Lets be real Hanahan is a good fill-in utility player like an Oakland A Valarde, but definiatly not an everyday player.
This is the most exciting rebuilding year since 1999 ( my dad out shouted these Yankee fans and was the first time i got really excited in being an A’s fan.)
(BEAT THE!!!)
lets go red sox
