Bring back Hatty? I say YES!!!!

I love Daric Barton.  He is the future at 1B.  That being said, I'd still rather have Scott Hatteberg wear #10 at this point and time.  Why?  Same reason Hurt is here.  This team can win now.  Barton has shown the ability to get hot, but consistency, well, that's another issue.  With Hatty, one knows they will get at least a .265-13-70 player.  Not flashy.  Not great.  But consistent.  So, with the Reds looking to trade Hatty, should we get him, for say, a mid-tier AA prospect, or just go with what we have now?  I leave the debate open to AN

I say DO NOT WANT

We have enough old 1B-men – don’t need another. Also, a career 101 OPS+ corner infielder is not something we should be going after.

NO NO NO

You must be Hatteberg’s dad, right?

We already have that player if

we want to go that route: Mike Sweeney.

Given between a choice of watching a struggling yet promising rookie

and an aged grizzled veteran, sucking at the end of his career…

I’ll choose the Rookie. If I wanted to watch bad 40 year olds, I’d be a Giants fan.

I could sort of halfway see claiming him on waivers...

actually, even that seems like a stretch… but there’s no way I give up a promising prospect for him. There’s really no comparison between, say, “Andrew Bailey” and “2/3 of a season of Scott Hatteberg.”

I say yes too

As far as I know, no one on the current roster has the New York Times delivered to the clubhouse.

not sure there's sufficient demand for Hatteberg

My favorite part of this thread is how swishd keeps doing one word no answers.
Like if I ask swishd, are you secretly in love with old geezers who can only field 1b and can’t hit for power? (aka hatteberg)

by tomoyo on May 22, 2008 5:49 PM PDT reply actions

NOOOOO!

The last few games I same him play in Oakland were awful, and he wasn’t a solid hitter in my memory atleast either.

by butler19 on May 22, 2008 7:22 PM PDT reply actions

The notion of wanting Hatteberg would be

more sensible if he didn’t have such dramatic home/road splits and play in a hitter’s park. The problem is, we’d get the “road splits” Hatteberg from the last couple seasons and that’s not actually very good. If he were as good as his home splits, I’d take him in a heartbeat.

ONLY acquire Hatteberg? Let's get DJ back too, while we're at it!!!!

Does this roster need any more 1B types whose primary offensive weapon is to hope for four bad pitches and trot down to first?? Don’t we have enough of those already? We could use a ”.265/13/70 player ” who can play SS (or 2B, after Ellis gets shipped…)
When I look at the starting lineup and see Hannahan, Crosby, and M. Sweeney coming up in the bottom of the first, I just want to cry…the top of the order should either hit for a solid average or with some pop…oh, I forgot—we don’t have any of either of those kinds of hitters…Hatteberg is just another example of what we already have…league average on his best day…

by kitoko on May 22, 2008 8:36 PM PDT reply actions

You mean if we had nine Hattebergs,

we’d finish 81-81? Cool.

Hogwash. The top of the order should get on base.

Period.

A walk is as good as a single when there’s no one on base.

I will admit that I cannot explain Crosby’s presence up there, but Hannahan, Sweeney and Cust have been the best on-base guys on the team this year.

thanks for getting to this

because if leading off an inning, you prefer a single to a walk, well…

Crosby's presence at #2 in the order...

...is explained by the fact that we don’t have ANYONE on the current roster with “top of the order” skills, so someone has to be there…no one in our lineup would hit higher than 8th in Boston’s lineup…why can’t people just put down the hash pipe and get real--this is a rebuilding year, and if we finish at .500, we should be REALLY EXCITED, because if these kids progress that far THIS year, we will be at least relevant again next year and perhaps dominant the following year.
By the way, the only time the top of the order necessarily comes up with the bases empty is the first inning…in all other innings, the possibility exists that they may actually have (heaven help us) RBI opportunities. I know perfectly well that getting on base is job one in the first two spots-I hit leadoff all through high school. I was not the prototypical leadoff hitter, more an Ichiro type that rarely walks, runs out a lot of hits, and steals bases. Believe me, there is a HUGE difference between a guy who hits .360 with a .400 OBP and a guy who hits .280 with a .400 OBP. Who do we want to see up there when the bottom of the order gets on-the hitter or the walker?
I haven’t had the chance to browse AN much this year, but one can’t help but notice the extreme and irrational hate for Emil Brown that many posters have no shame in displaying. He was not signed to save the franchise, and BB spent almost no money on him. He is just a warm body filling the jersey until one of the prospects proves to be ready. WHY hate this man? WHY? It seems to go farther than the field and become personal to some posters. I just don’t get it.
Smith and Eveland have been more than anyone could have expected at this juncture in their careers-to have them as middle-rotation guys in two years could be fantastic…just a random observation…

Why do I get the feeling that what you believe are "top of the order" skills

are actually, like, not things that guys at the top of the order should actually do?

Yes, there's a difference between

a 360 / 400 line and a 280 / 400 line, obviously. Guys who put up 360 / 400 lines also tend to cost more money than guys who put up 280 / 400 lines, and are harder to find.

Who “hates” Brown? The people who’re “hating” Brown, from what I’ve seen, are simply pointing out that he is a poor player who is 32 years old. Is that “hate”? Irrational “hate”?

I don't hate Brown for being a poor player,

but I loathe him for being 32 – there’s just no excuse for that.

speaking of Chavez

he had one of those “ranging far to right to stop blistering drive, then off-balance throw to first” plays (that just missed getting a speedy runner out) tonight in Sacramento. You could hear the crowd clearly on the internet radio, cheering to see that play.
