Can't be afraid to lose a game

If he didn’t want Devine to pitch, then you don’t pitch him unless it’s an emergency. If Smith struggles and gives up a couple runs and they lose, that’s too bad but Geren was thinking long term and I can accept that.

Either he screwed up by not putting Devine in to start the inning or he screwed up by panicking and using a guy he didnt want to use. You can’t have it both ways.

by Englishmajor on May 20, 2008 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ll try to explain it best I can…
The ball came to LF, Brown had a chance to catch it, though it was kind of low because I think he sort of lost it in the lights. He kind of slid feet in front of him and the ball hit his chest and rolled away from him. Bases cleared. 3-1 Rays.

by drmmerchk on May 20, 2008 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Brown only had to go about 10-15 feet

toward center, then in, tracking the ball as it came in about chest high. About two seconds before he would catch it, you could see in his face… “The ball…is….gone…”

The ball hit him right above the left tit and right on by. He was still looking toward the pitching mound, while the ball proceeded toward the left field wall.

If you’ve not been to the Coliseum at night, there are formidable lower lights, but….TWO NIGHTS IN A ROW???!!!

Fans hate Ryan Sweeney, he has a nice week highlighted by a 3-run bomb, now they love Ryan Sweeney. The fans love Emil Brown and his clutch hitting, he has a bad stretch, now the fans hate Emil Brown. Baseball is a long season. There are ups and downs. Overreacting to one game, one week of games, even one month of games is a little ridiculous.

nothing wrong with it though

it IS better than Bad Sweeney. And I think of him as Lil Sweeney… so it’s not like there’s options at this point. Maybe as he starts to produce more he’ll become something more than eye-candy.

I've come to the conclusion that the two most important things in life are good friends and a good bullpen.

Since that moment:

2 wins, 10 losses, although only outscored by 12 runs.

I am sarcastically amused by the fact that while the A’s have the worst Pythagorean-to-actual W/L in the league, the Angels, naturally, have the best.

Poor Greg Smith.

This offense isn’t getting better without changes.

What about Barry?

Horrible. This is why pitchers shouldn’t even have W/L records.

Smith pitched his butt off. You can’t keep wasting great pitching performances.

Why does Sweeney finally decide to run with 2 strikes on Bowen??

He should’ve attempted to steal with Barton up … it’s one thing to struggle at the plate … it’s another to just sit there and think things are going to change. They’re not. You have to try and manufacture a run at that point. Horrible, horrible team right now.

the Red Sox are coming to town, and we have interleague games against the Diamondbacks and the Marlins.

I hope we can stop the bleeding soon. Can it hurt our guys to get a few more hits on an errorless game?

My sacrafice

I have decided to save the A’s by picking up as many pitchers as I can that will be pitching against the A’s on for my fantasy team that night.
After being picked up by my fantasy teams, they will do as others before them and give up 7 runs in 3.2 innings.

I'm using MLB.com's 2008 Fantasy Open

And I started the Rays pitching this week.

I know it makes me a bad fan and a fair fantasy GM, but I would have rather taken the beating in the fantasy league than have the A’s get beat on consecutive nights.

Casilla to begin playing light catch in a few days

Oakland RHP Santiago Casilla, on the DL with inflammation in his throwing elbow, will begin playing light catch in a few days. “That’s really good news,” said manager Bob Geren, who initially thought the injury could be worse.
