And more recognition from FoxSports!
As Dayn Perry discusses the Quarter-pole measure of teams, it's wonderful to see the A's being recognized in two categories:
AL Rookie of the Year: Greg Smith
AL Manager of the Year: Bob Geren
Though I'm not sure what metrics are being used to rank Geren. Is accurate to give him the credit for actual team building? He's the one who is stuck with the payroll responsibilities?
Maybe this is just reflective of ongoing "ignorance" of the sports writers.
But Greg Smith is my new Fantasy player!

I would say that he’s getting this premature consideration because the A’s aren’t supposed to be where they are.

Rule of thumb:
When random bullpen guys pitch out of their minds for a while and go a month without giving up a run, the manager typically gets (most of) the credit.
I’d be willing to guess that bullpen ERA is more closely correlated to Manager of the Year awards than any other measure (apart from, I guess, wins).
Perry is not your typical Fox/ESPN dweeb, however. He’s written for Baseball Prospectus before; he knows what he’s talking about.
It’s just that manager awards are hard to justify under any criteria, because the value of the manager is so ineffable.

One thing to remember about Perry
when he puts on the Fox Hat, just like everyone else who’s gone before him, he becomes an idiot. Its the law.

That's too bad
About D. Perry, that is. And thank you too PaulThomas, for some input on what might be used to measure “success”.

Managers get
too much credit and too much blame. Most awards like this are pointless. Nice, but pointless.

In baseball, yes
It happens to be the nature of the sport that managers don’t do very much.
Coach of the Year is definitely legit in, say, the NFL. Although if it was actually awarded objectively, Belichick would win it every season. Several of his playoff teams, most notably the 2005 Super Bowl team, were frigging garbage, talent-wise.
(Not last year’s team. Belichick + actual talent = 18-1 season.)

Belichick the great
An 18-1 season and probably the greatest team ever (to lose in the Super Bowl). Hooray. I’m sure they’ll pick up some nice camcorders, errr, I mean players, in the offseason and be right back on top next year.

Dirty as that was
(and please note, I didn’t say I liked Belichick…) you don’t win as many games as they have without doing a lot of things right on your own end.

(and cheating)
I mean, cmon… that’s why all this “spygate” crap is being swept under the rug, even though ESPN would like to hype the shit out of it as much as possible because, well, it’s the NFL and they are obliged to do that with anything involving the NFL and/or a Boston team.
I fully believe that the Pats tapes that were turned over to the NFL and accidentally destroyed approximately 25 minutes after showing up had proof that NE cheated in the Super Bowl against the Rams. Obviously that information would completely ruin the NFL, so it was buried—the same way that the tapes this assistant kid finally turned over will be buried after Goodell says “hey, nothing to see here” one more time.

didn't these people see...
Three Days of the Condor? You don’t turn your tapes over to the NFL… MLB… CIA… or FBI… not if you expect to survive! You turn them over to the New York Times!

Just because you can't
tell who’s responsible for what, does not necessarily mean that managers get too much of either blame or credit.
Just because you don’t know who’s responsible for playing time or lineups, or how much different managers and different coaches affect different players doesn’t mean that managers and coaches have no effect.

Every time we get recognition
we go on a losing streak.

Maybe I should stop...
getting excited when I read any positive mention of the A’s.
No need for any negative streaks!

Despite the "Another idiotic move!!!" refrain on AN,
I think you can make a great case that Geren is well deserving of consideration for Manager of the 1/4 Year. The team plays above its talent level, it battles without ever giving up, and Geren’s lineups/pitching moves generally make a lot of sense. All good reflections on the skipper. No he’s not perfect, but perfect is not the standard by which a manager should be judged.

It's not?
“Runs below perfect” would seem, to me, to be an excellent way of judging managers.
Assuming that you know what “perfect” is, obviously.

Yeah, but...
...if the Rays even sniff a winning record, their manager will get the sympathy vote.
Some read stats. Others actually watch the game.

And rightly so. They've never been 6 games above .500 before.

Eh
That would irk me. They’ve had the talent to be a competitive team before. It’s pretty clear that the current management group was tanking games to get higher draft picks for the last several seasons. I mean, I suppose it makes sense—there’s no lottery in baseball, and it’s not like they have any fans anyway, so the strategy wasn’t going to cost them money—but people seem to be operating under the delusion that last year’s team actually had a 67-win talent level, which is laughable.

a little over 13,000 in Tampa Bay...
to watch a good team play the Yanks. Wow. A’s fans are fanatics by comparison.

I have been impressed with Geren's
Willingness to change lineups and pitchers. What a difference from the former managers – especially Macha and Howe.
But overall metrics for Manager of the Year?
