Former A's Pitchers: Hudson-Harden on Saturday
In honor of the Ol' Bulldog-- and in anticipation of what could be an extremely memorable game in Hotlanta on Saturday night, here are the former A's-- mound version:
1. LOOGYS
Micah Bowie (COLO) 0-1 9.00 ERA+ 50 (remember that great extra inning win in the Bronx where Bowie pitched at least a couple of innings?)
Ron Mahay (KC) 1-0 2.65 162 (One of the two A's scabs (or replacement players) that I'm aware of-- the other, of course, was Cory Lidle. RIP.)
2. Journeymen
Luis Vizcaino (COLO) 0-0 27.00 17
Juan Cruz (ARIZ) 1-0 1.98 225
Keiichi Yabu (SF) 2-2 2.45 170
Franklyn German (TEX) 1-0 0.56 732 (ERA went up some today)
Chad Bradford (BAL) 2-1 1.32 319 (Nice to see Chadford and Juan Cruz doing well)
3. Journeymen Starters
Mark Redman (COLO) 2-3 7.84 58
Ted Lilly (CUBS) 3-4 5.23 84
Kenny Rogers (DET) 3-3 5.82 72
Esteban Loaiza (LAD) 1-2 5.63 77
Pretty brutal collective line here. Why does Redman still have a job?
4. Quality Starters
Dan Haren (ARIZ) 4-2 3.04 146
Aaron Harang (CIN) 1-5 3.09 142
Jeremy Bonderman (DET) 2-4 4.80 87
5. Closers (Former, that is)
Jason isringhausen (SL) 1-4 7.47 55
Arthur Rhodes (SEA) 1-0 3.86 103
Octavio Dotel (CWS) 1-1 3.14 138
Anyone heard/seen anything about Billy Koch lately? His major league career ended in 2004
6. Big Three
Mark Mulder (SL) -------
Barry Zito (SF) 0-7 6.95 60
Tim Hudson (ATL) 5-2 2.90 139
Quick show of hands from all those who knew that of the five principal pitching prospects that were raised in this organization but then dealt elsewhere, the current value would be:
1. Hudson 2. Harang 3. Bonderman 4. Zito 5. Mulder-- and the only reason Zito would outrank Mulder is that he was healthy and Mulder wasn't

Can't Wait.
I’m so pumped for this series, I’ll be at all three games in ATL. I vividly remember back in 05’ when Oakland came in they were like 12 games below .500, and after getting swept in Washington, Chavez apparently had a team meeting on the bus on the way to the airport. Chavy then proceeded to go off in the series hitting 3HR’s in 3 days and going 5-5 on the final game with 2 of those HR’s. It totally turned the season around. It’s a little disappointing he won’t be there this year for an encore.
What about Barry?
"Barry who?" Forst said, and I felt like I was in the middle of a knock-knock joke.

If both pitchers perform well this could shape up as one of those
“games to remember” for a long time. I excited to watch.

your title almost looks prophetic
“former A’s pitchers: Hudson-Harden”
So far Harden is a current A’s pitcher…but who knows what lies ahead?

Juan Cruz
I always had an unnatural man-crush on Juan Cruz. His stuff was pure nasty, it’s just that he could never keep his head in the game long enough, at least with the A’s, to be a dominant pitcher. I think there was some AAA game for the Rivercats when he struck out 18 batters or so.

I miss Huddy
It will be good to see him on an A’s broadcast again :)

I don't know if it's really accurate to say that Harang was "raised in the A's organization" ...
he started with the Rangers and pitched more games for their minor league teams, before being called up, than ours … nor is it really accurate to say that Bonderman was, either—while virtually his entire Minor League career was spent in High-A Modesto, that’s only because the Tigers wanted to waste his service time allowing him to be raised in the Majors.
But I think it’s pretty clear, Beane knows when to cut bait on a pitcher …

Actually....
he pitched more games in our minors than theirs. Basically he threw for texas in rookie league and A ball; for the A’s in all or part of 3 seasons in AA and AAA. 37 starts for them; 50 for us. And if Bonderman was only “raised” for one full season, it was in our organization, not theirs.

The decision to promote Bonderman
has to have been one of the odder ones in recent memory. Had they taken him along normally, he’d be in his 1st arb year or even a Super Two at this point and still be cheap for years to come, even if he isn’t that good. Instead he’s already a year away from making full free agent money.

Word!
But I think it’s pretty clear, Beane knows when to cut bait on a pitcher …
I think that’s one of Beane’s strongest points as a GM… he knows when to let a player go.
Some read stats. Others actually watch the game.

Mulder or Zito
I pretty sure I would rather have Mulder’s Contract on the books.

Billy Koch
I think I saw him in a teaser commerical for a Channel 2 news broadcast after he retired. Something about a mysterious illness, I’m not sure if he had it or one of his family had it. I never saw the actual report but i remember thinking, wow how did a guy that threw 100 mph suddenly fall off the mlb earth? Maybe he was on steroids or some other banned substance? that could just be my imagination.

I heard the same thing.
Some weird disease with fibers coming out of his skin. Apparently there is debate in the medical community if this is a legitimate illness. I don’t remember what they call it but apparently both Koch and his wife suffer from it.

Fibromyalgia?
I believe it’s a debatable explanation for chronic fatigue syndrome. So, essentially he got chronic fatigue syndrome.
Hey, at least it’s better than mitochondrial disease.

100 mph
It’s not so much the speed of the ball as where it goes after it has left the pitcher’s hand. You get all revved up when Koch threw his warm up heat, but the party was over after the batter stepped in.
Enjoy the game

Damian Miller
Was a replacement player as well during the strike. He was also a good catcher. In his first week he threw a runner out at 2nd base and made a play at the plate. I loved Ramon but you didn’t see much of that during his time behind the plate. No one was ever out at home.
Enjoy the game

on the other hand, some A's pitchers didn't like
his pitch calling, according to some articles after that season. One reason Melhuse played a fair amount (besides the fact that Miller wasn’t an ironman) was that a number of pitchers specifically asked for Melhuse.

Harden's Chance to Prove his worth
We are looking so forward to seeing the matchup in Atlanta- we’ll be there cheering on Harden but also hoping Hudson does well. I’m a very big Hudson fan (even named my dog after him) and it broke my A’s heart to see him traded a few years back. When I think of what we got for him (NOTHING), it makes me sick. But hey, that’s the way the ball sinks sometimes… Go A’s- kick the Braves A*s in Atlanta, but show Hudson some mercy.
