Harden, Braden and Crosby for Michael Young? I say hell yes
by Swishdball on May 10, 2008 6:47 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I would agree to that trade in a heartbeat.
by Taj Adib on May 10, 2008 6:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
that would be a horrible trade
Young is not any good and he has a huge contract.
The A's colors are green and gold.
by mikeA on May 10, 2008 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Young is a great player.
Imagine how much better he would look playing behind a real pitching staff. Crosby isn’t going to get any better. Young may not either, but at least his talent ceiling is much higher than BoCro’s. Harden is unreliable. You could even throw Street into the deal and make Casilla the closer. The point is that the A’s are so deep that they could afford to make a trade like this to get a gritty, solid, all-star type guy to put them over the hump.
by Swishdball on May 10, 2008 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Young's not great defensively, but he's a great hitter.
And he can be shifted to 2nd starting next year. Plus, Crosby and Harden are only under contract for one more season after this one and Braden isn’t anything more than a left specialist long term.
by Taj Adib on May 10, 2008 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
.738 career OPS on the road....
So we’d be paying a ton of money for an average 2B for the first few years, and then paying a ton of money for a most likely done 2B after that.
The A's colors are green and gold.
by mikeA on May 10, 2008 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
ie, it's not the players we'd be giving up
it’s that Young is an average player with a giant contract.

If Cust’s spot gets up again in the 9th it’s against the lefty (C. J. Wilson) and you can hit Mike Sweeney.

Frank Thomas availability was unanticipated
Maybe he’s great, maybe he’s OK, or maybe he’s bad, but taking that chance at ML minimum salary is a huge bargain. Of course Billy is going to take it.
No one claimed off waivers because he’s not worth full salary, but he’s worth much more than league minimum. I’m sure plenty of other teams would have loved to have him at that price, but since there was no way to outbid, Thomas went to the team/location he likes best, which turns out to be us.
All in all, it was a very unusual situation. Normally a guy won’t get released when he’s still got something - unless he is totally spent, the owning team will generally keep him around since they have to pay him anyway - but because of the unusual contract situation, Toronto had to also consider the trigger of 2009 salary obligations, which we didn’t. As a result, keeping Frank is less valuable to them than obtaining Frank is to another team.

I agree, but at least it made sense
I think the problem was poor pitch selection – Suzuki should have called a slider, IMO, on the 3-2 to Duran because when a pitcher is missing way up with the fastball the slider actually forces him to follow through; plus Duran isn’t looking for it and it’s Casilla’s best pitch. Embree’s best pitch is the fastball and he had spotted it to Hamilton – should have stuck with it on the 1-2 pitch.

I would rather him at the plate than
Hannahan, Crosby, Ellis, Suzuki or Barton(in his current form)

Now that is your typical A's Tease
Give up a few more runs and score enough to get the tying run to the plate

The OF killed us tonight
Milton didn’t help either.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal

They play better when everyone expects them to do nothing
The moment it is acknowleged that they are a good team, they begin to read their own press and let up

I think this is just a random blip
Face a hot team (9-2 since April 30th) and lose a couple. Tomorrow it’s Harden against Ponson and a beaten up bullpen (no Wilson, probably no Francisco), so I like our odds – and we go into that tied for first place. Could be a lot worse!

We have to start playing better baseball at home. The road record
is fantastic but it won’t continue at this pace. No way.

Ponson has pitched pretty well so far but he is the ultimate GASCAN
Lets hope Rich is on as usual and we should win
And get Mike Sweeney in there somehow he kills Ponson .472 with 4 homers
If he’s not in there then we deserve to lose, Hear that Geren!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

C'mon, Nico
This is a game thread… get in the spirit
Let me hear you now -
We suck!
Billy Beane’s an overrated idiot.

Scouting A's hitters
FT: Throw fastballs in the strike zone until he proves he can still turn on a good one.
Brown: Bounce lots of offspeed stuff and watch him swing. No fastballs in the zone unless you’re desperate.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s

Who else agrees Mike Sweeney should be playing Sunday?
Give Barton the day off
Sweeney .472 (17 for 36) 2 doubles, 4 HR 8 RBI 2BB off Ponson and he is hitting well when he gets his 2 at bats per week
