Dan Johnson DFAed
Per Susan Slusser:
"Dan Johnson's agent, Bobby Barad, tells me that the A's have just informed the first baseman that he has been designated for assignment. That means they have 10 days to put Johnson on waivers, trade him or release him."
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=21&entry_id=25562
Obviously paves the way for Smith to be added to the 25 and 40 man.
Thank you and good night.

really surprised that they didn't just punt ...
... and push Chavez to the 60-day DL retroactive to date X.
Given the recent news about Chavez, I can't imagine he'll be back in game shape by the end of May.
Maybe another one of Beane's "favors," giving DJ an opportunity to possibly catch on and get PT with someone else?

because 60-day DLing Chavy doesn't get Smith onto the 25 man roster.

Visting Giants fan here
I've got a feeling he'll land on our team. I'm not sure why everyone on our side is clamoring over Johnson, none of his statistics really impress me that much but I guess when Rich Aurilia is your starting 1B, you can't get much worse. He still looks like a below average 1B to me.
I wanted to hear from A's fans what they thought on Johnson?

No, but he is this year so you have to compare Johnson to him
I don't see how comparing Johnson to guys who used to be on the Giants does anything in figuring out how he'd fit in there.

i think if he's given consistent playing time
in the NL, he will do much better than he did here. And he wasn't even that bad here, he couldn't hit for average, but he at least got on base and had an OPS+ of 108 last year.

The NL West has some pretty good pitchers
The Dback had an ERA+ of 114 2nd in the NL in 2007 behind the Cubs; Rockies had an ERA+ of 111 3nd in the NL in 2007. Dodgers 109, 4th, Padres 108, 5th .
The Dbacks just added Haren, the Dodgers added Kuroda.

Yeah, I find this genuinely astounding
The Giants are the only team I've ever seen try to convert players to positions that are further DOWN the defensive spectrum because they can't find anyone to play those positions. (While simultaneously ignoring the jillions of minor leaguers like Val Pascucci and Chris Shelton who could outhit their current assortment.)
Hey, be thankful there's no DH in the NL. Otherwise Sabean would be using it to try to squeeze Neifi Perez's bat into the lineup.

Good stuff: great patience, lots of BBs. Decent power.
Bad stuff: Horrible approach, rolls over on every single outside pitch. I don't think he's ever hit the ball to left field.
If you don't include Molinas, he is one of the 5 slowest guys in the majors. Soul crushing number of groundouts to the right side.

Correction
don't think he's ever hit the ball toleft fieldshortstop.
Like many pull hitters, he can hit the ball in the air to the opposite field, but he never hits it on the ground that way. You can shift on him every day of the week.

bonus DJ Poetic Interlude
Dan's Stick
[Original lyrics here.]
Dan's stick off the bench of Oakland
Dan's stick to the streets of San Francisco?
I wonder to myself
Could life put one over on Sabean again?
The SoMa street that they play on
I wonder to myself
Hopes may rise on the waiver wire
But Danny Boy, you'll not play here
So you're cut down
Like that switch-hitting clown
But there's Dan's stick on the streets of Pittsburgh
Houston, Tampa Bay, Washington
I wonder to myself
Call up the rookies
DFA the blessed DJ
Because the at-bats he could not consistently play
HE CAN'T HIT TO LEFT FIELD TO SAVE HIS LIFE
Waive the blessed DJ
Because the at-bats he could not consistently play
On the SoMa streets in your SF town
Sub-replacement clowns you trot out
Claim the DJ, claim the DJ, claim the DJ
DFA DJ, DFA DJ, DFA DJ
CLAIM THE DJ, CLAIM THE DJ, CLAIM THE DJ
DFA DJ, DFA DJ
CLAIM THE DJ, CLAIM THE DJ
CLAIM THE DJ, CLAIM THE DJ, CLAIM THE DJ
DFA DJ, DFA DJ
DFA DJ, DFA DJ
CLAIM THE DJ, CLAIM THE DJ, CLAIM THE DJ
DFA DJ, DFA DJ
DFA DJ, DFA DJ
CLAIM THE DJ, CLAIM THE DJ, CLAIM THE DJ
DFA DJ
