4/9/08 DLD: "I don't need your [deleted] sympathy, man!"
Bye-bye, Dan Johnson?: Tuesday night was very possibly Dan Johnson's last in an A's uniform. The team must make room on both the 25-man roster and the 40-man roster for tonight's starter, Greg Smith, and Johnson appears to be the most expendable. He has only one at-bat this season, and the A's have Barton at first base and Mike Sweeney and Jack Cust available to DH. Johnson is out of options and there's a good chance he would be claimed on waivers (the Giants are among those in the market for a first baseman). The A's can send him down only if he clears waivers, a process that takes three business days.
Will Rich Harden roll on Shabbos?
The subscapularis strain is the latest setback for the hard throwing right-hander who has been placed on the disabled list five times over the past three seasons. This current injury, though, doesn't appear as serious as those in previous years and Harden says he will start on Saturday against the Indians."I was wanting to pitch today, but they wanted me to take an extra couple of days," said Harden, who made just four starts for the Athletics in 2007 because of a strained right shoulder. "[We'll] push it back. There's not much I can do about it except get ready for Saturday."
You're entering a world of pain, son.
Davis, who will undergo surgery to remove his cancerous thyroid Thursday, said good-bye for a month or more with six strong innings, a pump of his fist, a tight-lipped nod of his head and a wave of his cap.
ESPN's Skip Bayless called Detroit's performance two days ago the worst in the history of Sunday Night Baseball.
Lord. You can imagine where it goes from here.
Mustard will never be the same.

Baseball physics
CNet video article... features clips with several A's players (looks to be very recent, as the CSN banner is visible in the background).
It was pretty light on the physics. The most informative part of the piece was when Lenny DiNardo was talking about how he adjusts finger pressure and spin to get different action on his pitches.
I think it could have been done much better. For example, for the sweet spot, something like this would've been much cooler.

I wonder if they'd consider sending denorfia down instead of johnson. they want cust, m sweeney & barton in the lineup at the same time forcing cust to the outfield meaning the leftover playing time could be split between brown, r sweeney, buck & johnson. denorfia gets regular playing time, johnson pairs up with one other person for the bench role and the decision on him can wait since chavey will be moved to the 60 day DL

Denorfia
Denorifa is looking more and more like the 4th/5th Outfielder of the Now & Future: I've been really, really impressed w/ Ryan Sweeney - Offensively and Defensively. And, I'd rather see other players get AB's in Sacramento.
by Colorado Fan on Apr 9, 2008 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That could work but
DJ is too slow and not a good enough defender. I can't imagine him playing outfield in a pinch but i could see CD playing 1B if the situation came up. If the A's really wanted to keep DJ they would have given him a few more at-bats. They were just holding on to him hoping the Giants would get desperate and trade for him.

Am I the only one
who would rather see Denorfia in the lineup than Sweeney?
The guy is essentially a second hitting coach on this team. He's a DH-type, so he's not going to have trade value (unlike Brown, who could be a bench bat for the right contender), and thus there's little reason to invest at-bats in him. And I really don't care about the phantasmagorian illusion of competitiveness for this season. I'd rather see the team establish its outfield of the future, and that means finding out what the guys are capable of.

While I agree for the most part
the only reason why i would suggest what i did was to delay the johnson decision. it's never good to be forced into making final player decisions which is what's happening to Beane & Co. with these injuries. Sending denorfia down, at least temporarily, gives them more time to make that decision. This assumes that they haven't already decided they're not getting anything so they're just going to dump him.

I don't know if Montgomery would have come back to Stanford, but maybe he would have. It's not as if he left on bad terms. Ugh, I hate to even think about it.
I'm proud of the women, though. They really got steamrolled last nite, but they made the tourney so fun and they seem like such a good bunch of ladies, I'm proud to have them represent Stanford.

Definitely proud of the women...
...and I'm glad they finally got the final-four monkey off their back. I was just hoping that if they went down, they would go down in an epic battle. It just feels like we never lose in the tournament (men's or women's) just because we weren't good enough - we always seem to go down (in part) because we have a bad day...
If the job had been there, Monty would have absolutely come back. He was already employed at the athletic dept and he was around all the time - hell, I even saw him at the football games.

If Stanford doesn't play a great second half/OT against Marquette,
there is no Texas game.
There's no way you can argue that the Marquette game was not "stepping up big in the biggest of moments." Particularly when you consider how underseeded Marquette was.

I am absolutely proud
And they did step up against Marquette (well, Brook did for sure). That was an incredible game.
I'm just saying I'd rather they have them lose to Texas because they just weren't good enough. Instead I believe they lost because they had some rather uncharacteristically bad stretches of ball in that game. They stepped up against Marquette, but then the moment got bigger and they weren't able to pull out their "A" game...
by RickeySteals on Apr 9, 2008 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's inevitable though
When you are a good team, the odds are good that most of the games you lose will be because you didn't play very well.
Stanford lost 8 games this season, and the last two UCLA losses are really the only two that you could argue they actually played well in.

Stanford's rep is that they won't pay the big bucks... but everyone knows that going in. Johnson (who was an assistant there before) should've known it better than most. And yet he still made several statements about wanting to stay at Stanford indefinitely...
It has to be something beyond just money - although if he's leaving because Bowlsby was a week late in coming up with a contract extension offer (Bowlsby might've been distracted by the other basketball team on campus), he really ought to have his head checked...

Washington DC—Access of Evil
Just as I suspected all along. The Washington Post reports on the nefarious 217 year-old plan to use the street layout of Washington DC as a mechanism to usher in Satan as the master of the terrestrial plane.
David Bay (was) speaking by phone from Lexington, S.C., where as director of Cutting Edge Ministries he has long asserted that Washington's streets are positioned to usher in Lucifer as "the ultimate master of Government Center.""You will need to have your maps of Washington, D.C., opened in front of you as we proceed," reads a treatise on the subject posted on Bay's Internet site.
Using Dupont and Logan circles as northern points, Bay instructs, you can trace various interlocking streets to form a demonic pentagram, one that bores directly into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Other satanic hot spots cited by believers include the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument. The latter was described by Bay, the South Carolina author, as a filthy, phallic and satanic homage to the god Baal.
