Harden Scratched From Tomorrow's Start - Updated

Sorry for the short post, but I figured this warranted its own sad little place on AN. Slusser:
I've just arrived in Toronto to a bombshell: Rich Harden has been scratched from his start tomorrow night.

No further info was given, but he was held to 86 pitches his last time out after having thrown 95 the time before that. He was bothered by biceps tendinitis this offseason, but hasn't had any other issues since the end of last season.

Chad Gaudin will start tomorrow night, which means the A's will have to be a [sic] roster move.
We're. All. Gonna. Die.

MINOR UPDATE: Slusser added one strange sentence to her blog post:
He is now expected to start Saturday at Cleveland, according to an e-mail from the team's P.R. department.
I have no idea what's going on here. That sentence makes it seem as though a trade isn't imminent, which has been speculated in the comments. It also doesn't make it sound too bad, if it is an iunjury. Flu? Rest? SARS? I guess we'll know more in the morning.

MORNING UPDATE: One start. Not serious. Yet. Blah blah blah:
The A's have scratched Rich Harden for tonight's game in Toronto with back soreness, specifically in the lat area.

The injury is believed to be minor and it might have been the aftereffects of the long flights to and from Japan last month. Harden is now expected to start at Cleveland on Saturday.
Gaudin will make the start Tuesday. Slusser also writes that a source tells her Greg Smith will be called up to start Wednesday.

Hardin is probably just staying in from the cold

I have a feeling there is nothing wrong with Hardin. They have been talking alot about the real cold weather on this trip and they may just be taking Hardin out of the rotation so that he doesn't hurt himself from playing in the cold.

I sincerely hope this is all precautionary. Can anyone name another pitcher talent-wise similar to Rich who has had his career derailed by injuries? If this is something serious, how will Rich handle this mentally?

It's a good thing we have some pitching depth. Greg Smith is going to have his ticket punched to Oakland sooner rather than later. Gio will be next.

Herb Score got hit in the head

with a line drive. It wasn't as if he had shoulder problems, back problems, leg problems, arm problems (see Kerry Woods, Hardin, Mike Hampton...et al).

If that ball simply went 18 inches higher, Herb Score would have done much better in his career.

So Slusser has Harden scheduled for Saturday.

The A's page has him on Wednesday. It looks like Gaudin is coming back a couple days earlier than anticipated (although this decision could also involve non-Harden factors such as a quick rehab or Duke's injury).

Here's what I can come up with:

1) Harden is hurt and, as usual, the A's PR staff is loathe to divulge information. Test results are pending.
2) As mentioned above, the move is designed to keep Gaudin on schedule.
3) The A's are going with the pitch-Harden-once-a-week plan mentioned on the sfgate blog last week. This seems unlikely given it will have already been a week since Rich's last start on Tuesday. Also Harden doesn't like being treated as an injured player, and history suggests the A's are unlikely to treat him as such during his brief bouts of good health.
4) A trade is in the works with a team that wants Harden to be able to pitch some time in the next few days.
5) Eveland (slated to pitch Thursday) stole Harden's passport and wrote his name on it.

I'd take any of the non-injury related options. Any other ideas?

It's like the phases of the moon

1. We're pushing Harden's next start back a few days.
2. Harden is skipping this start but is expected to take his next turn.
3. His next turn is also being pushed back a few days.
4. We're putting him on the 15-day DL but it's retroactive. He'll only miss two, or at most three, starts.
5. Harden is still experiencing discomfort and is being shut down. Dr. Yocum says there is no structural damage and prescribes rest and rehabilitation.
Etc., etc., etc.

Guessing

It's likely a non-baseball related scratch. With Harden there's no way they'd bother even considering to schedule his next start if there was something physically wrong with him. They'd be treating him exactly as they are with Duke. He's probably just got that nasty cold/flu that's going around.

the team is getting Greg Smith ready to come up very soon. I also hear the A's brass is even higher on Smith than they are on Eveland. Interesting..... Also, Carlos Gonzalez will be the regular centerfielder for the A's by the beginning of May.

If I look at it that way, losing Harden doesn't ruin my night so much.

Seriously though, isn't this a little bit like a girlfriend cheating on you repeatedly, but you stay with her because when she's into you, she's pretty awesome? I'm reminded of the song "Self Esteem" by Offspring. That's kinda how I feel about Harden.

The more important question, I guess, is who goes away with Gaudin coming off the DL? Does DJ get DFAd?

by thejd44 on Apr 8, 2008 12:46 AM PDT reply actions

I haven't heard Offspring for a while. What else did they sing?

It is funny how Rich keeps making enough starts, every once in a while, to get everybody all excited. Question: If we knew he was only capable of making two starts a year for the rest of his career, wouldn't it be worth paying him the major-league minimum to make those two starts? And by the way, if I'm Rich, I'm not even thinking about retirement for this very reason. Even as a guy who can only make two starts per year, he could still probably make a living out of those two starts until he's 40 ... a helluva lot better living than what the rest of us are getting by on.
And of course, hope springs eternal that he's back on Saturday. 5:1 odds against, but still hope springs eternal.

This just proves

that if Beane can get a near full price offer in a trade for Harden he should take it regardless of the A's record.

The A's can't count on Rich Harden to stay healthy.

Harden=Toast

Bummer. Big time, I was encouraged, but it all went to hell... Arghhhh.

Maybe the A's will deal Huston Street to the Indians, get some arms or middle infield help and then move Harden to closer to make him more attractive to other teams?

The Athletics current situation:

Rich Harden and Duke already hurt, Chavez still on DL, Buck still hitless, Beanes' thoughts about the current status of the A's : No Problem!

Gotta love the way the A's don't expect at any given the roster to be healthy, so it's always going to be plug and chug with all the prospects until some consistency plays out.

"It's not good," said Harden, who has been out with a strained right lat muscle since Aug. 19. "As soon as I started trying to throw changeups and really extend the arm, I could feel it. Hopefully, it doesn't put me back too far."

"No way," Harden said after Sunday's loss to the Rangers. "There's no way I can start a game Friday. I don't even know when I'm going to be able to throw, period -- even on the side. We'll see how it is tomorrow, but it seems like every time I try to let it go, it gets hurt again and I'm back where I started.

My newfound Zen

For the first time ever, this year I actually convinced myself to not get excited about the prospect of a healthy Rich Harden. So I was totally nonplussed by this news, and weirdly, I'm somewhat optimistic that the Saturday start will happen (even though the "extended flight" explanation smacks of the front office trying to keep other GM's from panicking over injury history implications). But it really reinforces the idea that we need to take what we can get for Rich "Throwing Too" Harden.

Earlier, I said I'd take a Swisher-esque trade instead of one more along the lines of Haren's; now, I'll take a Scutaro-esque trade (and I'm only slightly joking). The A's have to realize some value out of all this.

Very bad.

The subscapularis is one of the rotator cuff muscles, together with the teres minor, supraspinatus, infraspinatus. Combined with the biceps tendinitis, which is also involved in shoulder movement, most likely,

Well, if my self-taught medical pseudo-Latin is not mistaken,

the subscapularis is below the scapula (shoulder blade)... so it's kind of a wash whether you call it the shoulder or the back. It's not one of the two injuries most frequently associated with the term "shoulder injury", though (rotator cuff and labrum).

I followed that mediLatin path, too...

But it's more a part of the shoulder ("geographically" and functionally) than the back.

It is one of the most frequently bad shoulder injuries

It helps hold the shoulder in place, during shoulder extension and flexion, such as when occurs when throwing a baseball.

It works in concert with the infraspinatus and the teres minor in holding the humeral head down, when the deltoids and supraspinatus work as a force couple.

When the subscapularis weakens, it allows the humeral head to upride, causing more friction against the AC (acromioclavicular) joint.

by mikeA on Apr 9, 2008 1:28 AM PDT up reply actions

FWIW, rereading my post

I'm overreacting somewhat. While it is one of the rotator cuffs, an injury to the subscapularis is not generally as serious as an injury to the supraspinatus / teres minor / infraspinatus.

Those 3 are the external rotators, the subscapularis is an internal rotator. Generally injuring an external rotator is worse.

here's some more fun info

http://www.massagetherapy.com/articles/index.php/article_id/812

Pertinent excerpts:

If the subscapularis strain is mild, a week or two of rest will often eliminate this injury. Unfortunately, most shoulder injuries undergo repeated tearing and poor scar tissue formation, so treatment is needed.

[Friction/Excercise] treatment will take anywhere from three weeks to three months depending on the severity and length of time the injury has been present.

When the adhesive scar tissue formation is too severe or when the injury is many years old, hands-on therapy may fail to be effective. In these cases, one or two corticosteroid injections performed by a very skilled physician are often effective within a week or two, but they should be followed by several weeks of rehabilitative exercise as described above. To counteract the weakening effect of corticosteroids, proliferant injections can be performed by a qualified physician to strengthen the tendon structure. The proliferant is a controlled irritant that strengthens the tendon and can also tighten an over-stretched tendon which may result from distended scar tissue or multiple dislocations.

by phastphill on Apr 10, 2008 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Heh, from his article, he's prescribing

those isolated rotation exercises too. Pretty much every pitcher, from pros to high school does those already. It's debatable how effective isolated rotations are to athletes like pitchers, who use the rotators in complex compound movements.

"If the subscapularis strain is mild, a week or two of rest will often eliminate this injury."

The problem, really, is that Harden is a pitcher. Pitchers are so much more sensitive to shoulder injuries than other athletes. What is fine for say, the shoulder of a1b, a volleyball player, would not be true for the shoulder of a pitcher.

Doing as you suggest would seriously damage the A's reputation; not just among pitchers, but also among GMs and team execs. No team is going to be willing to trade for A's pitchers for fear that the A's deliberately break them.

Patience, Grasshopper ...

The A's are either going to be good or terrible with or without Harden this year. It's not like he affects whether the team is actually legit. This way we can see what we've got in our young pitchers. I say put Harden on the 60-day DL now and hope to bring him back for 4-6 starts before the trade deadline. It's not like we're missing him since we've never really had him in the first place, and his trade value will still be astronomical if he is healthy and and throwing peas for a month before the deadline. Or the A's will be in it and have a fresh Rich Harden for a critical part of the season, bolstering an already strong team.
