Starting pitcher misses flight to Toronto
Dateline Oakland, California -
This just in . . . . According to a reliable source (at least I can rely on them!) SP Dana Eveland's passport was stolen (along with his laptop and possibly other items) when his vehicle was broken into at the Starbucks on Hegenberger Road earlier today. He is not on the team flight to Toronto. The good news is that he is not scheduled to start until the A's get to Cleveland on Friday. In other Bay Area news, the Giants still suck!

eveland also slipped and fell in a japanese bathroom
hopefully he doesn't end up being one of those "something crazy happens to him every few months" guys, since we already have dan johnson.

He'd have to work pretty hard to beat vertigo
and a hole nearly drilled in his forehead. Dan Johnson gives grade-A "How the...?" material.
"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."

Bummer!
I would maybe have put this in the DLD -- it would fit right in with today's theme -- but that is a minor quibble. AN breaks news again!

This can't be part of the DLD.

That actually really sucks about the Passport
From what I recall, it takes weeks to get a new one.

I bet the team/he can pay to have one expedited if he really needed one soon.

Weeks? Just slip Santiago Casilla a $20.00 and it's done
Hmm - the A's are listing a big white lefty named "Jairo Garcia" for Friday's start.

If you already have one
and you have the passport number, and especially if you have someone in your front office who's paid to do such a thing, you can get a substitute pretty fast. I remember back in the day it was said to be a good idea to always carry a separate set of passport photos and your passport number with you when traveling abroad; then if your passport got stolen you could present yourself at the embassy and get a new one right away. Nowadays with the digital photos, I bet you don't even need the extras.
Speaking of passports, have any of you seen the new ones? With the pictures and inspirational quotes?

At least two references to God
from MLK Jr. and from the inscription on the Golden Spike. Most of the quotes are from dead presidents though. I got a new passport a few months ago with regular processing and it didn't take long at all, maybe three weeks.
Can't you still cross the U.S.-Canada border on the surface without a passport? The implementation of that requirement has been delayed repeatedly at the insistence of Congress. Fly to Buffalo, rent a car, cross at Niagara Falls and drive on around the lake to Toronto. That's better than spending an entire week in Cleveland.

You need a photo ID and proof of US citizenship...
such as a birth certificate.

Did Jesus have a birth certificate?
Two references from God ought to be sufficient. If not a bit redundant.

I thought for sure this was about Rich Harden...
Then I remember he is Canadian, so they almost have to let him in.

Might not let him leave, though ...

Passport?
I guess it's been a while, but I thought U.S. citizens were allowed to cross into canada with just a drivers license.
It's just more exciting with Billy Beane running the team.

it's always been a little more stringent flying
in and out of the country. Also, there have been some changes to the laws.

New laws in 2004
Flying in or out of Canada or Mexico: you need a passport.
Traveling by train, car, ship, foot: you need a passport or an approved ID (like a driver's license) AND your birth certificate. By next year, you have to have a passport.
