That is pretty cool.
I still would have liked to see Thomas get a shot at the cycle, but oh well. He still looked damn happy after the game.

That triple meant more...
... than words—or the cycle—ever could. ‘Least, that’s the way it looked to me.

I wonder
A triple would have been included in a cycle, and he’s never hit for the cycles before, whereas he has hit triples before.

"Record" isn't quite the right word here
because it implies a quantity which has been exceeded.
There’s an obscure linguistic term, hapax legomena, which is used to describe a word which comes up only once in a body of text. (Say you have a million-word text body, and you find that “archimandrite” only appears once. It is therefore a hapax legomena.) There should be a word like this for baseball to describe “an event (or events in conjunction) which has/have never happened before.”
Anyone feel like inventing one?

It is a quantity that has been exceeded
In record book it would be under “Most players to enter as a pinch runner and later register a hit in the same inning” or something like that, with the quantity of two.

How about “sui generis”?

"A's set sui generis last night"?
Still doesn’t quite have the right ring to it… :p

I'd actually argue that it is a record
What’s the record for number of pinch runners that have also recorded a hit during the same inning?
2, by the Oakland Athletics on 4/29/08.
It has exceeded the previous cases in which one pinch runner has registered a hit.

What makes this funny
is that hapax legomena is plural.
If “archimandrite” appears only once, it is a hapax legomenon.

Let's call it a "legomenon." They were, after all, pinch runners, and others were on-base.
There. Are you hapax now?
