What is ESPN?
Are they that sports network dedicated to the Yankees and Red Sox and everything involving those 2 clubs? Quite frankly I hope the disrespect of the A’s continues. We don’t need bandwagon coverage from that lame ass network.

Part of the hilarity of this fanpost
was all the Angels coverage.
Honestly, ESPN is generally good at covering both coasts. Oakland just happens to be the very last team on the West Coast that matters to them. Midwestern teams generally get the shaft (Except, maybe, the Cubs. But you’d think they would get more play since they’re the 2nd most popular team in the entire sport).

That's not entirely true.
ESPN covers the west—all the way to Wrigley field.
They might be wary of taking camera crews too far into the Louisiana Purchase and beyond.

Miggy
The Miggy thing was the single most horrific tactic I’ve see recently. How do you take advantage of someone’s language difficulties that way? For no fault of Miggy’s, given his language barrier, he’s going to look guilty when they pop a birth certificate on him…
It takes courage to make yourself available for an interview, and doing so is a favor to ESPN (and the fans). A few more stunts like that, and I hope someone will start declining them interviews.
If you’re a latin player, and you saw tape of the miggy ambush, would you EVER do ESPN a favor again?
And WTF is E60 anyways?

Ambush interviews occasionally have their place—like when a big chemical company is putting leaded glass shards in children’s toothpaste. But to set up someone like Tejada, who has done so much for the game, for utter humiliation on camera is wrong, wrong, wrong. I do hope a players’ boycott against ESPN gets rolling. Do it guys!

To add further Insult
ESPN has a poll today concerning the “surprise” teams and which one has the best chance to make the playoffs. 5 teams are listed—including Tampa, Baltimore and the White Sox in the AL. But not the A’s. I guess the team tied for the best record in the AL is not a “surprise”—despite the fact that Karl Ravitch thought we were under .500, Jon Miller didn’t know we were in first place and nearly every ESPN “expert” picked us 3rd or 4th in the division. We are so far under the radar we’re touching the ground!

the A’s were in first place later in 2007. April is not September.

No offense...
And maybe it’s just because I’m used to it, but, so what? I seriously don’t think that ESPN and the mainstream media has this vendetta out on Oakland, as some people on AN have made it seem.
More people care about the Sox and Yankees. They have more fans. Why shouldn’t they get the bulk of the supply if they also have the bulk of the demand?
Yes. I know that there are lots of hardcore A’s fans, and Orioles and Rangers and (insert smaller market here) fans. Yes, I know these teams also deserve recognition. But I stopped expecting the Joba/Jeter/A-Rod/Manny/Ortiz/Papelbon-like coverage from ESPN a long time ago. They’re a national network, they cater to what the majority wants.
Sorry about that, and in all honesty, the list was funny and true.

we all get this of course
but at some point even casual fans want to see 1st place teams doing good things as opposed to middling .500 teams wondering what the problem is. A lot of the reason there is a steady diet of Sox and Yankees is that ESPN shows Sox and Yankees and it becomes a self-repeating cycle. Baseball fans aren’t going to tuneout of Baseball Tonight because they are showing the A’s instead of the Yankees or Sox. Casual/new fans do develop an expectation of Yankees/Sox if ESPN is constantly cultivating that in people too though.

It's not just ESPN- cues from NY media
I rarely watch “Baseball Tonight” anymore… especially with the “teasers” they usually put in about the A’s. For instance, on 4-24 Thursday when the Athletics did two things (1) Frank Thomas signing and debut and (2) trounced the Twins in a DAY game, you’d think the A’s would lead off, or close to it, on Baseball Tonight. No, they had FOUR teaser remarks about the A’s, which totaled MORE TIME than the actual A’s piece…and the A’s piece did not air until thirty minutes into the show!!
Instead… INSTEAD! .. they led off with the Yankees-White Sox GAME DELAY! ridiculous!
“What do you think? Should the Yankees pull their starter if the game resumes, or…?”
Everyone comments on this idea, 30 seconds each.
Attention: WHAT ABOUT ACTUAL, FACTUAL NEWS??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was in New York City in May, 2002, and decided to watch the evening news to pick up the A’s score. I didn’t expect much, but…. the Yankees lost that day (out of town) and with all the player interviews and a long interview with Joe Torre, you’d have thought they just lost Game 4 of the WS, and were down 3-1 in the series!
The sports segment of the news didn’t have time to even LIST the scores from other games!! In May!
That is where ESPN takes its cues.

Regional media outlets
You can more or less blame this on the internet. The internet provides an outlet for all “niche” (in the sense that A’s coverage would be niche in, say, New York) and on-demand sports coverage. You don’t need to catch all the scores in a broadcast anymore. Therefore traditional (read: limited in time and space) media outlets focus all of their resources in getting in-depth coverage on the local teams. That way, they have unique content provide additional value from the ESPN.com and Yahoo Sports of the world.

Angels AAA affiliate.
I heard Morgan mention it last night, and had to see for myself…
The Angels AAA affiliate, the Salt Lake Bees, is currently 21-1. Now I don’t follow minor league baseball outside the A’s, but first indication would be that their farm system is stacked. Anyone care to elaborate on this?
What about Barry?
"Barry who?" Forst said, and I felt like I was in the middle of a knock-knock joke.
by KMoAsFan on Apr 28, 2008 12:16 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
May be the best start in minor league history
Neyer just wrote about them on his blog. Reggie Willits is there this year—Hunter moved him back, basically; perpetual power prospect Brandon Wood as well—if he ever learns to make contact, watch out. And a stud pitcher named Adenhart. A big part of the reason BB went young this year is the Angels’ system—lots of talent there.
by madmongoose on Apr 28, 2008 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just looked at the team
and while it’s a perfectly reasonable AAA team, it’s not a ridiculous powerhouse in terms of prospects. There are a lot of 25 and 26 year olds on the team who are tearing it up, but their upside in MLB terms is pretty limited (especially in the Angels system… some of those guys would contend for roster spots on the A’s).
Nick Adenhart’s stats are baffling. Somehow he has a 0.87 ERA despite walking a ton of batters, not striking very many out (K/BB ratio is 19/15), and not getting ground balls (1.17 GO/AO ratio, about average). The BABIP of opposing batters is no higher than .196 and might be slightly lower. This is in a hitter’s league, playing in a park at altitude (which increases opponents’ BABIP).
Either he’s discovered some new mechanism for pitching (in which case the Rockies had better find a way to trade for him), or he’s past due for some major, major regression.

by PaulThomas on Apr 28, 2008 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I went through this too
Adenhart’s stats are baffling, but so are the rest of the starters’...none are really outstanding. Then again, 21-1 is just insane. Admitting my own ignorance on the subject, could we even expect an average MLB team to go 21-1 in the PCL?
by dscel on Apr 28, 2008 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Baseball is a sufficiently random game
that I would be surprised if an average MLB team would win more than 75-80% of its games in the PCL.
Thinking of it from another standpoint, a league-average MLB roster is about 30 wins over replacement level. If you think of a AAA team as being essentially replacement level, you would expect the MLB team to be in the neighborhood of 27 wins over average in the PCL (shorter season accounting for the other 3) for around 100 wins and 40-something losses on the season. That’s not even a 75% winning percentage.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
by PaulThomas on Apr 28, 2008 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
This is exactly the explanation IMO
Good write, Paul.
I recall the 1984 Detroit Tigers. They went 34-5, then played .500 ball the rest of the way.
Once in a while, it has to happen that a team will hit a winning streak like that, even in the highly competitive Major Leagues. The vaunted 20-game streak by the A’s was done by a team that in no way was “one for the ages”. The A’s simply got “alignment” in their schedule, and individual performances, for one-eighth of the season.

A personal thing
I find it disingenuous to wish an opponent good luck before a game when it’s in a competitive (tournament/league) environment.
I mean, I DON’T want them to be lucky. I want me to be lucky and them to be unlucky, or at least unlucky enough that I’m able to win. Luck’s a part of the game—and I want more of it.
If you’re willing to wish the Angels good luck, you’d better not be angry when Vlad hits a walk-off home run on a pitch in the dirt and 6 inches outside, or Chone Figgins scores after getting on base with a 16-hopper infield single through the box.

With ONE out, it’s completely insane. Especially when it’s the winning run.

Winner!
Ramon Hernandez homered off Scott Linebrink in the top of the 11th – after the White Sox botched a bunt play in the 10th – to give the Orioles a 3-2 lead.Neither closer could finish it. Baltimore tied the game in the ninth off Chicago’s Bobby Jenks on Melvin Mora ’s RBI single following a leadoff double and stolen base by Brian Roberts .
Chicago had a big chance to win in the bottom of the 10th. Carlos Quentin , who continued his strong early season play, hit a leadoff double.
But after he moved to third on Joe Crede ’s fly ball, Chicago’s Brian Anderson foul tipped a bunt attempt on a squeeze play and Quentin was tagged out. Anderson then struck out to end the inning.
