The Big Hurt Returns

Well it finally happened, the A's brought back Frank Thomas and it breaks AN, thanks alot Billy Beane.

Thomas Returns to Oakland

Thomas signed for a pro-rated league minimum contract which checks in at about $337,000.  Even though I am a little concerned about the log-jam at DH, for that price you really can't complain about the signing, it would be stupid not to make it.

To make room Buck has been put on the 15-day DL, and Chavy has been moved to the 60-Day DL.  No one has been let go yet, but more moves will have to come in the future I'm sure.

So, let the celebrations begin and lets see what this server can do!

I wondered when soemthing would be posted on here about him. Great move! And he’s in the lineup! How about a six spot in the first! That’s a good start!

So my question

the rotoworld thing on the front page said that another team came in with a better offer, and that is why Frank wouldn’t be signing with Oakland. What better offer could have been made? And why did Frank not end up signing with those teams. Good start to todays game.

Might as well Jump! - Van Halen

by sprtsnwyn on Apr 24, 2008 1:18 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not possible to make a better offer

At least not financially. Whatever Frank gets paid by his new team, Toronto is on the hook to pay the difference to bring the total up to the Toronto contract. So if another team offers to pay more than Oakland, that just means less money Toronto has to pay, and Frank gets the same amount either way.

Unless a team actually offers more than the Toronto contract (and if anyone was insane enough to want to do that they could have just claimed him off waivers) the only way to make a “better offer” is with non-contract considerations. So it’s really just up to Frank about where he’d rather be. Probably he was ready to sign with Oakland, then another team made an offer, so he took a day to mull it over and then decided he’d still rather be with Oakland.

Not quite true

A team could have offered guaranteed money in a later season. Apparently no one was willing to, though, which surprises me.

At first i thought it was a dumb move to sign Thomas

But he comes so cheap (Thanks J.P.!) it’s worth it. Bad for Cust and R. Sweeney (and maybe E.Brown) but good for A’s.

As for Rhaja(?) Davis, why do we want a Giant’s castoff?

A's all the way in 08 . . . oh never mind!

by micdog2001 on Apr 24, 2008 1:18 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Davis is a short term fix for Buck

Since Buck couldn’t play, and because Beane didn’t want to put someone from our AAA onto the 25 man roster for a short time, he signed Davis and will probably let him go after Buck is ok and back.

I really like having Thomas, He is the reason we got so much for Swisher. He was the role model for Swish and helped him hit better. I think that Swish would have had an even better 2007 if Thomas had stayed.

He can really help Buck, Denorfia and R. Sweeney, I hope they watch and listen.

I've been concerned since the offseason

He seems to be suffering from Rocco Baldelli syndrome—probably not literally in the sense of “crummy mitochondria,” but figuratively in the sense that he doesn’t seem to regenerate and recover from minor tweaks very quickly.

Barton

My only concern is getting Barton ABs

Why can’t we just teach Barton to play 3rd?

by juanmiguel on Apr 24, 2008 1:25 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

don't not a huge deal...

I assume Barton will only sit against lefties, at least while we’ve still got Sweeny, Cust, and Thomas. And I don’t imagine that situation to stick all season, as one of three will almost certainly (1) be traded, (2) be released, or (3) get hurt. It probably won’t cost Barton too many ABs in the meantime. And even on those days he doesn’t start the game, I have to assume he would come in for Sweeney late in the game for defense, or as soon as the pitcher is out of the game (assuming a righty comes in).

Of course, Sweeney is still in the game, even though Liriano is now out, but it’s the 2nd inning, so I can’t imagine pulling him quite that early. Plus, maybe he just needs a rest now and then.

by rageon on Apr 24, 2008 1:30 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

agree, Barton is only, what, 23?

I think the Thomas signing actually hurts him most, as he is sure to lose the daily starting job. But even if it works out as a platoon of DB and Sweeney at 1st, and Cust and Brown in LF, it’s still a huge improvement over what we had before. BTW, based on what I’ve seen so far this year, I’m not sure Barton will be replacing anyone for defense :-)

by PDSF on Apr 24, 2008 1:50 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Great signing for the team, for the price...

The A’s are competing right now, despite all the headaches we might be having over, well, everything. I guess the best thing we can hope for is that he can carry the team on his back for stretches, like he did two years ago, and lead them into the playoffs.

Wishful thinking, but there’s not much being lost if the gamble doesn’t pay off.

by RenoTy on Apr 24, 2008 1:29 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is lovely

Thomas was quoted as saying he would like to retire with us!

Now, he hopes to retire with the A’s.

"I hope so," Thomas said. "That’d be great."

by jamesc on Apr 24, 2008 1:29 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wait

I looked it up.

Barton did play 3B for a total of 25 games in the minors. How big a defensive disaster would it be to temp him there while we figure out the Buck, Thomas, Sweenies logjam? Would it be enough of an offensive upgrade over this Hannahan/Murphy business while we wait to see what happens with Chavy?

by juanmiguel on Apr 24, 2008 1:33 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

"Disaster"

is exactly the term I believe was thrown around to describe Barton at third base.

Think Ryan Braun, without the homers.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on Apr 24, 2008 1:44 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I guess it's wishful thinking

I’m just wondering why we have two roster spots dedicated to Murphy and Hannahan. I know they platoon and that we need a Scutaro type infield utilityman on the roster, but…do we really need both of them?

by juanmiguel on Apr 24, 2008 1:51 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you do need an infield

Murphy is the all-purpose backup. And Hannahan hitting a buck fifty doesn’t exactly inspire confidence to play every day, partic. against lefties. Basically no one else can play any of the three non 1B infield positions—unless you want to bring Pujols over to play second!

by madmongoose on Apr 24, 2008 1:58 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'll take it

Pujols at second…

any day.

Sorry MaEl.

After today’s performance, I am tempted to start Murphy at 3rd and bring up whoever the next best util. infielder is…Petit?

by juanmiguel on Apr 24, 2008 2:11 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Plus,

With Barton’s lack of power (I don’t really know if it IS on the way), I think he’d be better off learning a new position while he’s still young. Otherwise, he could end up repeating the career of Dan Johnson (whether or not he is an avid sunscreen user).

by juanmiguel on Apr 24, 2008 1:53 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

it's been less than a month.

I’ve always thought that Daric Barton seemed like a much younger Scott Hatteberg. I’ll be pretty happy with that at First Base for the next 5-6 years.

His power production may never wow us all, but he won’t slug .373 forever.

by ChrisCEIT on Apr 24, 2008 2:31 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Barton has 4 home runs

in 40 MLB games (or thereabouts).

For a 22-year old rookie, that’s fine.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on Apr 24, 2008 3:03 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Absolutely.

Barton didn’t see a grounder at third that he couldn’t boot into left field.

by ChrisCEIT on Apr 24, 2008 2:28 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How Long..??...

before BB adds the other BB?? Chavez out til who knows when and we have no left handed pop. As i posted before, signing Thomas and eventually Bonds will add two players who are hungry to prove all the critics wrong, which could be dangerous. Thomas did that on his first tour of duty. Adding Bonds who is angry and hungry can also give the young kids great pennant run experience. As much as i dislike Bonds, i think with him being humbled he would be out to prove he can still play and be a great influence on the younger players.

Make No Mistake-- Cust Now in the CrossHairs

Hit 150?? You get shin splints and get DLed pretty quick.

Mike Sweeney ain’t going nowhere. Today is the perfect illustration—he can sub for Barton against lefties—he can DH when Thomas can’t go—he can pinch-hit more liberally now thatwe have another defensive option in Davis.

But Cust?? With Gonzalez waiting in the wings?? I think big Jack had better start hitting soon or he won’t be here much beyond Memorial Day, if that.

by madmongoose on Apr 24, 2008 1:42 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Err

Shin splints is not a made-up condition. It’s extremely painful.

Given Buck’s frailty over his entire career, I’d be very surprised if his condition was exaggerated.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on Apr 24, 2008 1:48 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, but...

I’d be very surprised if shin splints are the reason he’s looked hopeless at the plate—with the exception of about two games—from the get-go. The guy simply doesn’t look like a major league hitter this year. And if we have major league hitters to replace him, I’d say the odds of him playing a lot have declined dramatically, shin splints or no shin splints.

by madmongoose on Apr 24, 2008 2:00 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm not surprised one bit if it's all from the shin splints.

I have them and they’re nearly crippling when they get “kinda bad” and all I do now is play indoor soccer and slow pitch beer league softball.

At their worst they become stress fractures of the tibia and/or microfractures, and then you have SERIOUS issues to deal with.

Re: Barton & Frank

I don’t think signing Frank will hurt Barton’s growth. The guys a rookie. Playing him every single game probably isn’t in his best interest and having him get a spell to rest isn’t a bad thing. The biggest problem is the roster space taken up by three DH/1B players and being thin elsewhere.

Jack Cust Gone?

With having Frank and Mike Sweeney…I’m really not seeing much place for Jack Cust now. Personally I wanted to see how well he would do this year…but I’m not liking the odds of him being kept now. We have enough DH types already, having 3 is massively overkill on our roster. I guess that’s the price to pay for getting Thomas!

by tomoyo on Apr 24, 2008 3:16 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

cust could at least be stuck in corner outfield

it might be ugly but it’s something… would rather that than bench/platoon barton for sweeney… sweeney can only dh or play 1b

Cust is the new Jaha.

by johnjahafanclub on Apr 24, 2008 3:22 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cust has to go

I know it’s still early, but it’s becomming apparent at least to me that last year may have been his career year.

I’m tired of seeing him striking out 1-2 times at the plate every game and hitting .150.

I hope they keep Mike Sweeney. As long as he stays healthy, he can do good things for the A’s this year !!

by DaveinRoseville on Apr 24, 2008 5:09 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

strikeouts are overrated

Cust leads the AL in walks and has a respectable obp… better than most guys hitting .250 in the AL right now… dude is in a slump just like Frank and should bust out… sweeney on the other hand has no power anymore… plus even if you think sweeney is better offensively, he would cut into barton’s playing time whereas cust can play outfield… which makes him more valuable to us

Cust is the new Jaha.

by johnjahafanclub on Apr 24, 2008 5:36 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what's funny is that Cust is hitting some great singles

Going the other way with fastballs away, or pulling inside pitches, he’s hitting one or two clean, hard singles a game lately.

But he’s still missing (and missing badly) on the massive-uppercut, trying-to-go-yard swings.

I’m not sure if he actually is using a different approach for those different results, or if he’s using the same approach and making “odd” contact with the ball to generate the line drives/stinging groundballs.

But he’s not fouling anything off at all. He’s either hitting the ball hard (but low to the ground) or missing entirely.

In Oakland logjams are very easy to fix

One of these DH guys will get hurt pretty soon, and then we won’t have to worry about our logjam for another 15-20 days until a different one gets hurt. It’s really a very simple process or cycle - whatever you want to call it.

The coliseum environment at A's games recently

I grew up an A’s fan in the 70s – 90’s in the bay area and moved to Roseville ( Sacramento ) about 10 years ago.

I usually go to about 3-4 games a year during bay area business trips. One thing I have noticed, especially this year and last is the alarmimg increase in the number of pan handlers ( and in some cases aggressive pan handlers ) in the parking lot. It’s getting to the point that I’m beginning to get frustrated about it and is beginning to take away from the fun experience of attending games. For example, I was at the game on Tuesday and was approached 3 different times just sitting in my car about 4 rows away from the colesium !

For those of you that drive to the games, have you also noticed an increase in this kind of activity ? Does it bother you ? Can I complain to someone about it ?

To me this would impact interest in attending games by some, especially if I was a new fan and gointg to the ballpark for the first time.

Thoughts ??

I haven't parked in the A's lot so far this year

I prefer the VIP lot, although on a weekday game such as today, it can be pretty challenging finding a space.
I did get approached by a panhandler in the main parking lot at one of the last few games of last season. The guy was a fragile old drunk, pathetic not scary. But it is a nuisance and particularly so, as you say, when you’re sitting in your car as a captive audience.
I’d call Stadium Operations at (510) 563-2377 and let them know it’s a problem. Perhaps they could redeploy some of the overzealous ushers who were hassling people upgrading their seats on Tuesday night.

Bring it!

Much as I like Babe Cust, I think he’s going to be the one sitting out when all is said and done. Sweeney’s just doing too well compared to him, I’d be surprised to see either Sweeney depart this early (though Billy certainly lives to shock).

Seeing the Giant of Awesome back in the proper color shoes is so damn exciting. I loved Big Frank with the team and was genuinely surprised when he didn’t end up with us again. This seems to be setting the world right again.

When the A’s returned from falling out of the postseason in ‘06 and we waited outside the Coliseum for their return, Frank was one of the guys to stay around for a longish period to sign autographs and chat—he seemed like a genuinely fan-friendly person, and it makes me happy to see him sporting the green and gold again.
