DLD 4-24-08: Big Hurt returns, promptly breaks AN servers

Hello?  Hello?  Is this thing on?

Since I may be one of the few people who has been able to log on today, here are the facts if you have not already seen them:

Frank Thomas has been signed to a deal.  Travis Buck goes on the 15-day DL with shin splints, Eric Chavez goes on the 60-day DL with general debilatating allover brokenness recovering from back surgery.   Susan Slusser's bloggish story on SFGate

and Official A's Press Release.  According to the Star Tribune's Twins blogge r, Frank is taking BP in Oakland even as I type.

The will of the people of the left field bleachers will not be denied!  (At least not this time.)

Star-divide

In other news:  Rich Harden's sister got roughed up for wearing a Calgary jersey at the Sharks game.   She is a true Canadian.   Also in that post, Andrew Brown and Huston Street got pwned by the sixth-grade chess champion.

Dump if you are able!

While I sympathize with Harden,

shouldn’t he (and, one presumes, his sister) be a Canucks fan?

said Harden, who spent his early childhood in Calgary.

The A's colors are green and gold.

I thought 12-21 was more the formative age for sports fanhood

Well, I guess it’s kind of random… and of course my A’s attachment is partly from early childhood too.

Meanwhile, I’m getting all these delightfully ironic mental images of Harden winding up to punch a guy out for hitting his sister, but pulling a muscle before he can even throw the punch.

Speaking of things like that, anyone see what happened to Swisher yesterday? That’s such a vintage Swisher moment.

Rich gets the black eye and lands on the 60 day DL.

the blog makes it sound like swisher

broke his bat because he’s SO strong. dorks, he cracked it on an earlier swing. you could tell because after fouling one back earlier he smelled the bat (probably because the crack smelled like burnt wood or something), at least that’s what baseball tonight said. makes sense to me. whatever makes you happy though I guess.

Chess

I have to put the chess quote here, I read it to my kids this morning to much giggles…

Daniel Naroditsky, a sixth-grader from San Mateo who is the 12-and-under world chess champion, played A’s relievers Andrew Brown and Huston Street simultaneously and beat both with ease, beating Brown six times and Street four times in less than half an hour.

There was a nest of that spider to that, but it is that.

Please, stop talking about Billy Beane. David Forst is the one making the moves. Beane hasn’t been involved in day-to-day activity with the A’s in almost two seasons.

Frank McCourt loves the earth

$500 million to staple a “grand entrance”, some landscaping, and a couple of giant parking towers onto Dodger Stadium.

It also includes a “green necklace” of new landscape elements and twin nine-story parking structures buried into the hillside—along with terrifically vague ideas about connecting the stadium to public transit.

It’s going to be a “year-round destination”, apparently. Which strikes me as a disappointingly unimaginative euphemism for “tacky outdoor shopping mall with a ballpark tucked in the corner”.

[T]he stadium will feature preferred parking for alternative-fuel vehicles. The Dodgers are also encouraging the use of public transportation.

Press release-ish item here.

The renovations call for planting trees around the ballpark and a focus on conserving water as well as promoting recycling and other environmental initiatives. The Dodgers will use the latest technologies to save millions of gallons of water each year. Recycling measures include post-consumer waste recycling, and recycling materials that will be removed throughout the building process. The Dodgers will use native or drought-resistant plants for landscaping and, where possible, energy efficient bulbs in all ballpark and scoreboard lighting. Other environmental practices will include installing energy efficient appliances in all kitchen and concession facilities, and purchasing building materials and items used in concession kiosks that are made from recycled or quality, durable products.

Note that the nine-story parking garages are sure as hell getting built, but the transit connections … well, they’re encouraging them. But hey, they’re gonna plant trees and recycle! And, “where possible”, use energy efficient light bulbs.

Ah, well – just the latest iteration in a long history of condescending corporate olive branches to green sensibilities, I suppose.

I can’t find anything relating to the financing details, but possibly I just don’t know where to look. Can someone point me in the right direction?
