A's Sign Rajai Davis, Demote Saarloos
Am I just really tired and out of it or does espn have an article up titled "A's claim OF Davis off waivers, designate Saarloos for assignment"???
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3364298
I guess I'm not surprised we demoted Saarloos because we have good ol' Lenny D (ps: lenny d haters can go to hell... dude is my hero for outpitching the bosox's 100 million dollar pitcher June 5th last year). But obviously with all the reports about Big Hurt one would have figured we would be replacing Saarloos with Hurt, not Rajai Davis. Rajai is a nice player but is very anti-moneyball... pure speed and no slugging... although he does have a decent obp. I am extremely shocked we claimed Rajai.
pps: BB: dump rajai asap and sign Hurt!
ppps: Hurt detractors: you can't use Mike Sweeney's first home run of the season today as an excuse for not needing to sign a better power hitting DH. One homer doesn't mean Sweeney all of a sudden developed .540 slg% pop (Hurt, 2006), or even .480 slg% pop (Hurt, 2007) for that matter. We need Hurt asap.
pppps: "Meanwhile, Oakland right-hander Rich Harden threw off the mound for the first time since going on the disabled list April 3 with a strained throwing shoulder. He is slated to pitch in a simulated game Saturday in Seattle as his next step."... what is the over/under on whether harden hurts himself saturday and doesn't resume throwing for 3 months???

Par Que?
We didn’t “Demote” Saarloos. We released him. He is free to sign with any team. My guess is that he takes the assignement to Sacramento.
Dinardo is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to inconsistent. One start vs. Boston was the luckiest start I have ever seen.
Duke will start on Saturday…. Not Harden.
You are Really tired and out of it…. Everything you wrote is wrong (pretty much).

I read somewhere that Saarloos accepted a minor league contract with us
Not exactly sure how it works with him since he’s been released before

Interesting Move, Minor That it Is
A’s are obviously hoping to bring Saarloos back into fold—so they wouldn’t otherwise affect the 40 man roster. As I posted before they have about 15 or so major league arms and one of the strategies this year will be to employ them at appropriate times and manage the obvious injury toll—witness Harden and Duke and now Foulke.
Harden is throwing a simulated game on Saturday.
As to the position players, the fungability of the pitching staff does give the team the option of going with 11 pitchers (the Brewers have gone in the other direction with 13 and, for a while, 14 pitchers at the big league level!!) for a period of time. 14 position players can be:
2 catchers
Sweeney
4 starting infielders
Murphy
and then 6 more bodies, currently named Cust, Brown, Buck, Denorfia, R Sweeney and Davis. They have more in-game flexibility to use Mike Sweeney and Jack Cust in platoon or pinch-hitting situations since Davis can then come in to play defense. If Buck’s shin splints don’t improve, then DL him.
What would Thomas do to all this? I can’t see Mike Sweeney remaining unless Jack Cust keeps hitting under the Mendoza line. But depending on how the options work it may be that they buy time by putting Buck on the shelf or demoting either him or Denorfia and forestall a decision about Sweeney, who they obviously like for lots of other reasons. If and when Gonzalez is ready then clearly Davis and possibly Denorfia becomes a luxury

So how does this work?
Did Davis not have any options? Isn’t he pretty young?
So since we claimed him off of waivers, he has to stay on the 25-man roster the whole year?
Sounds like a bit of risk and a potentially wasted roster spot, but he does have some upside.

Davis is 27
He’s fast, gets on base and plays an excellant defensive center. He’s really awesome at not being Matt Morris.
You guys will like him. Us Giant fans got kinda attached to him in his short time here.
you can't block the Bocock

I think the A's got davis
knowing they would get Thomas, who needs to be pinch ran for a lot. Looking at our previous roster, i dont see anyone who you would use as a pinch runner for thomas. I’m guessing that’s why the got davis.

I bet the pinchrunning did figure into it.
Outfield defense had to be a factor too.
