Sorry About the Down Time

Apparently a server upgrade we did last night in the middle of the night led to us crashing for an unprecedented amount of time tonight.  In the middle of it all, I was called and told we signed Frank Thomas but then found out that we didn't.  I was freaking out, but I'm hoping that we're past the issues now.  The problem is that we essentially had to shut down one of our servers while we try and figure out the issue, which is something we've never run into before.

My sincerest apologies and we're really working to make sure that it doesn't happen again.

The good news is that the A's got a huge win tonight and that Frank Thomas still hasn't signed anywhere. That we know of.

Thanks Blez

Server growing pains. Always.

Not so hep on signing Thomas. The A’s are getting crowded with low BA guys who go station to station. I think Frank may not return to 2006 form…or even get close.

I'd be just fine with 2007 form.

Pretty big upgrade over Sweeney.

problem is it might not be the 2007 form either

good timing for Sweeney to run the bases well, score and drive in runs—including his first HR for the A’s, huh?

The A's did make an offer to Frank Thomas

There is a second team involved now.

Bavasi isn't that smart

He would have just claimed Thomas and inherited that whole contract.

Blez, all the down time did

was make us all realize just how addicted we are to AN. Some good market research for SBN, I think – anyway to track how many times we refreshed during the downtime? Hah.

The kings remain missing, so they're playing with Eric Chavez Bobbleheads. "Chavvy does have six Gold Gloves," Brown explained. "That's good enough to be king."

Probably would've

been hundreds by myself alone even though I was IMing with clockwerks during the time.

yeah, this is just Blez' cheap ploy

to remind us how much we need him!

One question for Thomas supporters

I was curious about one aspect of replacing Sweeney with Thomas that I have not really heard talked about on AN. The one thing that Sweeney can do that Thomas cannot - Sweeney can still take the field and play first base. (Maybe not well, but he can do it). If we swap Thomas for Sweeney on the roster, the only guy we have that has any experience at all playing first is Hannahan. That means that essentially that we only have one backup for the entire infield - if Barton, Ellis, Crosby or Hannahan needs a day off we can only give one of them a day off at a time as only Murphy would be there to back up the whole infield. As it stands now, at least Barton can get a day off by putting Sweeney in the field, but we lose that when we swap Sweeney for Thomas.

Is this something we should be concerned about, or is carrying just 5 infielders something we can live with for the extra power potential of Frank? (especially for a team with our injury history).

what is more important?

a few extra rests for daric barton (who is very young and energetic) or a DH who hits 30 bombs vs. a DH who will be lucky if he hits 10 bombs?

Cust is the new Jaha.

The A's vs. the top pitchers in the AL

Didn’t know where else to put this -

Take a look at the AL leaderboard for ERA – The A’s have played 6 games against the top 7 pitchers (One of them, Eveland, is an A). The A’s are 3-3 against these pitchers, whose combined record is 13-3 (with the A’s handing 2 of the losses). Their ERA’s against the A’s has been a collective 3.00, whereas their combined total ERA’s is 1.91.

As bad as the A’s offense has been all year, apparently it excels against some of the hottest pitchers in the league. That said, I’m still not looking forward to the A’s facing Francisco Liriano today!

of course,

with the small sample size, it could be that the reason these pitchers have top ERAs is that theyve pitched against the A’s…

Thomas signed

My friend who is the opposing team batboy confirmed this via pix message of the lineup today. Sweeney is playing first base, hitting third, Frank is DH batting 4th.

re: the server

Don’t sweat it. All is good. Stuff happens. I had my period of withdrawl, but I’m stronger for it. LOL!

Some read stats. Fans actually watch the games.
