Los Kirk is back
It was inevitable, but Fernando Hernandez has been designated for assignment and Kirk Saarloos, he of the ridiculously low K rates (115 K in 305 innings with the A's), is back. At least, Saarloos won't be starting. As you can tell, I am not a big fan of Saarloos or any other pitcher with super low K rates.
What do you think? Obviously, Hernandez did not distinguish himself. To be fair to him, though, it's not like he had regular work until recently.

...and he sucked in that regular work
Love this move. Need Saarloos for long relief during this loooooooong week, with a bunch of new pitchers.
So, bring on Bonds! Or, not... then, bring back Langerhans!! -One won lost one

Hernandez was Rule V right? He has to be returned now or traded for?

Yea, how can they DFA him?
Unless the Chisox refused him?

Where's PaulThomas to explain the rules when you need him?
by mrrickyg on Apr 14, 2008 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
There's no way he could be DFA'd
I know that much - a Rule 5 selection has to be offered back to his original team.

The player is first placed on waivers
If another club claims him, they get him with the same obligation to keep him on the 25-man roster all season.
I believe this is how the Twins acquired Johan Santana. The Devil Rays had taken him in the Rule 5 draft (from Houston), but when they decided not to keep him, the Twins claimed him on waivers.
by Soaker on Apr 14, 2008 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I thought it was the other way around
1. Player gets offered back to original team
2. Player can be waived, any team that claims must keep him on the 25 man as a Rule 5er
3. If player clears, he can be kept by the team that took him ( i.e. Oakland) and sent down
by mikev on Apr 14, 2008 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No...this is from Cot's
The drafting club must keep the player on its 25-man active roster for all of the next season or put him on waivers. If a third club claims the player on waivers, the third club also must keep him in the majors all season. If the player clears waivers, he must be offered back to his original club for $25,000. A drafting club may work out a trade with the player’s original club so that the drafting club can keep him and send him to the minor leagues.
My memory on Santana was bad. It was the Marlins who took him in the Rule 5 draft and they traded him to Minnesota.

After 3 outings?
Might as well DFA Embree too. It is far too soon in the season to make a decision like this.
And why would the A's waste a spot on the 40 man roster for Saarloos instead of just calling up Meyer?

Yeah
looked absolutely AWFUL against Cleveland. Besides, A’s haven’t been good with Rule V the last few times (Jay Marshall bombed last year, and Mike Neu didn’t do much either).

Because Meyer is god awful.
Anyone but please.
But seriously, do you want up throwing long relief and not getting regular work? Wouldnt make sense to stick him in that role.
Bring back Hammer.

Sacramento's Rotation
Who gets his spot in Sacramento's rotation?
Sometimes life will strike you out on a curve ball and the only choice you have is to flip off the umpire and walk to first base anyway.

Seriously, where'd you hear/see this?
Must have been on the radio. There's nothing online yet that I could find.
If true, I don't mind the move. Hernandez didn't show much, even in limited time. He didn't look like he would show much, given extended time. And with all these youngsters starting and DiNardo no longer available for long relief, we're probably going to need someone to eat 4 or 5 innings in a game sometime soon.

He was used twice in junk time
and once when virtually no one else was available. (And if you don't think the end of yesterday's game was junk time, you weren't watching it.)
It would be difficult to come up with LESS relevant situations to insert him. He pitched 3 times in 2 weeks. Maybe not quite Witasick-esque, but pretty close.

yes and they confirmed the DFA
my guess is you can DFA before returning to the original team to give you time to work out a trade with the original team, allowing you to send to minors.

See above
Other teams have a chance to, as it were, take up the Rule 5 burden before the player is offered back to his original club.
I suppose it's even possible that the original club could claim the player on waivers (to prevent other teams lower in the waiver order from doing so) and thus have a player that they, in effect, Rule 5 drafted from themselves!

Kinda sad to see Hernandez go, but viva Los Kirk~ One of my favorite A's ever. And with Gaudin, DiNardo, and Smith (and probably Eveland), the A's need a competent long guy.
by 31Boots on Apr 14, 2008 4:38 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I know Kirk isn't very good
But I kinda like the guy and am not exactly upset he's taking the last bullpen spot. I hope he does well.
I also hope the A's find a way to keep Hernandez, because he's still young and has potential.
Speaking of DFAs, Dan Johnson wasn't claimed by anybody it seems. I guess he'll be playing Sacramento soon.

I like him, too
I see he and Lenny DiNardo as essentially mirror images of each other, but Kirk will always have that 10-win season when he was the best 5th starter in the league. Plus, for some arbitrary reason, I feel more comfortable with a sinker specialist than with a slop-baller who throws everything up to and including the kitchen sink at the batter.

Saarloos was one out away from a complete game shutout, and the guy hits a home runs, then gets the next guy out.
