Which A's jersey should I get?
With the trade of Nick Swisher to the White Sox (and Aaron Rowand leaving the Phillies), I now have no baseball jerseys that are current. I want to get a new A's jersey, but I'm worried. When I bought the Swisher jersey a couple years ago I thought for sure I was going to get a solid half-decade or more out of it. But, alas, I root for the A's and nobody stays for long.
So now I need to decide who's name and number I'll wear next.
I take a few things into account when deciding on a jersey. I don't like to get the most popular players. I got my first Aaron Rowand jersey after his rookie season when he still wore #44. Swisher eventually became the most popular A's player, but I picked up early. I like to be at least somewhat unique in my jersey selection.
I also want a jersey of a guy who will likely be on the A's for a while. I know, this is the hard part. The obvious choice is Travis Buck, but I'm worried he's just going to be Nick Swisher 2.0. And really, I'm not keen on having to buy another new jersey because my Buck one is obsolete in 2010. I could go and get a Carlos Gonzalez jersey, but he hasn't played a game in the majors yet and maybe he'll never be any good. He's also more likely to change his number once he sticks with the big club.
So right now I'm not sure. I'm a big Jack Cust fan, but he doesn't exactly give me thoughts of long-term. I really like Donnie Murphy, but I'm not convinced he'll ever get a shot to succeed with the team. I'm not even going to bother with pitchers because they'll either get hurt or get traded (although I'm considering Jay Marshall because I love LOOGYs). I like Mark Ellis and would love to get a jersey of him (with unicorn patches instead of the elephant, of course), but he might not be with the team much longer either.
So I think I'm left with two choices: Kurt Suzuki and Daric Barton. I've been following them since they came into the organization and have high hopes for both, so either one could work. But I can't decide and I'm not made of money so I don't think I'll be splurging and getting two.
So what do the fine folks at AN think? Suzuki or Barton? Any dark horse options I didn't consider? Maybe I should just get a blank A's jersey and get some removable stickers so I can remove the name and number when the player gets traded. Hmmm.

The beauty part
Of wearing a jersey of a player who leaves the team, is it shows that you are a salty fan. It shows that your old school, and not some Johnny come lately type of fan. I look at it like when I was in high school, and I used to go to lots of metal shows. The older the tour shirts you were, the cooler you were, because it shows that you have been down for longer. That argument aside, out of your two choices I'd go with Suzuki, just because I have a feeling that he will develop into one of the leaders of the team, by the time the A's win there next championship. I personally am going to buy myself a Justin Duchscherer jersey, because the Duke has been one of my favorites for a few years now.... Don't steal my idea though...LOL.

Agree 100%....
Former Player's jersey means you are no Johny Come Lately. How many angels fans have jerseys other than Vlad, Hunter, or Weaver... you see where I am going.

How many Angels fans
even heard of the team before 2002?

i like to get player tees instead
and i have a suzuki and duchscherer one! :)
i have a bunch of ex-A's tees in the back of my closet. =( after the haren and swisher trade, i told myself i am NOT getting anymore player tees ... but i'm tempted to get a barton one!
as for a jersey, hmm, tough choice! i'd go with a blank one just because A's players don't stick around for long.
or get an all-time great Athletic like eck or rickey or stew!

you have a Duke tee?!?!
Where/when did you get it? I have always wanted one, but never saw it. Thought about ordering one from the A's mlb shop site and personalizing it with Duchscherer's name and number, but the personalization stuff is done in white, not yellow.

unfortunately
my duchscherer tee is one from the A's mlb shop site. i wish the name and number were in yellow like the shirts that are sold in the coliseum stores but oh well! i'm happy with it. :)
maybe they will have the duke shirts in the stores this year!

Suzuki
there aren't many logical replacements at catcher and, as far as i know, suzuki isn't really hot trade bait. Besides, you got to love him... hes from hawaii
But i think the 70's jerseys are much cooler. Not only will you stand out, there are no annoying buttons.

I'm thinking Suzuki is going to win
To respond to a few comments all in one post:
I AM a Johnny-come-lately. I didn't grow up an A's fan. Living in Chicago, I grew up following the White Sox, got disgusted, and as I got into sabermetrics, read Moneyball, and wondered why the hell Kenny Williams was trading for Carl Everett and Robbie Alomar every year I just gave up. I've followed the A's since around '03, but have only really been a fan since mid-2004. I don't go way back like a lot of people.
And that leads to the next point. I don't really have that connection to A's history. I wouldn't feel right getting a Stewart or Rickey jersey because those weren't "my" A's. I certainly respect the history of the team, but Catfish Hunter doesn't hold a whole lot of special meaning to me.
And I won't get a Duchscherer jersey because I'm not sure how long that'll be useful.
I like the idea of the jersey tees. Plus, when one of those is no longer current it's not nearly as much "wasted" money.
Just wondering if anybody here has a favorite jersey (or any kind of team apparel). Doesn't have to be an A's one.

maybe you should wait to get it
maybe one of the kids will become your clear cut favorite during the season and then you can get theirs! :)

my favorite A's apparels
are the ones that not too many people have yet like my suzuki and duchscherer tees ... and before he left, my melhuse tee!
oh, and my green & yellow A's cap full of A's autographs from the last few years!

i still wear
my tim hudson jersey all the time...all-time favorite, along with mcgwire. still waiting for the price to drop on one of his.
ebay usually has a pretty decent selection...i think the stores are called jadgang and jerseystore2000. they had a bunch of a's jerseys last year.
i'm gonna get a cust shirt i think. i'm interested to see what shirts they come out with this year.

Anybody know if you can personalize the T-shirts?
I wouldn't want to do it for a jersey, but I'd love to get one of the tees that says "SpartaCust" on the back.

Trust Beane
I'd say you have a few options:
1) Barton - Beane ain't giving up the kid who's supposed to be his consistent .300 hitter
2) Suzuki - Catcher has Powell on his tail but looks to be the go to guy for the next few years
I recommend no pitchers because they are package deal makers for Beane.
It's just more exciting with Billy Beane running the team.

ZONIS...
advocates you get your own name on the back. I suggest you keep the Swisher and go vintage - that's what I'm doing. I get a ton of comments when I sport the Tejada as well.

lol yeah
And this IS the reason why I say get your last name, or alias, or favorite past player on the jersey you get: because he won't be around for long, but the custom jersey will be timeless. If its a HoF A's player, or even just a past star (Stewart, Tejada, Rickey) it will be fine, and if you get your own alias jersey (I have a Zonis green A's jersey) then you will be able to keep it through out the years. But if you get a Donnie Murphy jersey, he's probably going to be gone in 2 years. And we've seen what happens with the Bucks and Bartons of the world... And for reasons you mentioned, that Rich Harden jersey is still gathering dust.

Definitely keeping, and will still wear the Swisher jersey
Especially to one of those two April Sox/A's games if I get a chance to go. It's gonna be hard wearing that around the city though as he's tearing it up on the South Side. Ugh. Why couldn't ANY other team give up their entire farm system for him?

COMMENT BUG.
The comment composition box is blocking the comment someone left with the subject line "Definitely keeping, and will still wear the Swisher jersey." I can see the subject line and two lines of the comment, but can't see the rest of the comment or who left it. Also, I think the top of the comment composition box is supposed to say "Post a comment" or something, and it's cut off.

Scutaro
I finally picked up my long coveted Scutaro t-shirt last year...just in time right? but I'd still wear it.
And I have my trusty Rickey jersey.
But I agree with getting the blank one...you're supporting the team.
I found a really cool (but not authentic) A's jersey at the Colliseum store last season, with gold stripes on the sleeves and a combo of green/white . . . it is blank and unique and I love it.

I'm still gonna get a Scutaro A's jersey
He was my favorite Athletic the last few years, and I'll be paying attention to the Blue Jays (or "Oakland East") to see how he does.
