A's interested in Juan Pierre???
According to Susan Slusser:
More rumblings that the A's are on the lookout for a center fielder: According to a major-league source, Oakland recently inquired about the Dodgers' Juan Pierre.
Interesting. I guess with the insane amount of players that played in center field last season for the A's, they are trying to gather up as many outfielders as possible!
Who would the A's trade for Juan Pierre??
Would Blanton be included in a package?

Pierre's signed through 2011
Even Crosby's contract ends in 2 years!
2008: $8 million
2009: $10 million
2010: $10 million
2011: $8.5 million
All years guaranteed.

the only possible one
would be Chavvy's
(I had to run off to work so didn't add that).
In any event, after I saw the "sources" I realized it was just another unconfirmed rumor.

The stuff that would be emanating from me if the A's replaced Denorfia with Pierre would not be.

Chavvy
Maybe they are looking at trading Chavvy for Pierre, with some other consituents involved. They both have god awful contracts, and maybe then the A's could pick up another player to fill some other void...

Andy LaRoche?
Seriously, that's the only way this could make any sense. Pierre is a slightly faster version of Shannon Stewart for 40 times the money.

First thing I thought of...
BB must be trying to get Pierre on the cheap to deal him at Midseason, hopefully increasing his value over the year... while getting some good prospects and cash relief.
If Pierre hit waivers all the teams would pass on that awful contract, and it seems like they don't want him any longer in LA... I could see this being a boon to the A's. Worst case scenario is that he gets injured and we have to foot the bill, so we better have some good prospects in any deal.
No Harden and No Chavez make the A's go, something something...

Pierre has no value, in fact he has negative value
hell, acquiring him would criple the franchise.
If Beane acquires Pierre, he has officially lost his touch, and should be fired on the spot.
by Zonis on Mar 4, 2008 9:41 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Hence, why no team would pick him off waivers...
Therefore he could be the one getting Prospects and Cash from LA in exchange for next to nothing. Beane could figure that if the Dodgers pay out $, then he just has to deal Pierre to a needy Contender for a prospect or two to unload the salary.

Thus why I said on the other thread
that it could be a straight salary dump.
If the A's got Pierre plus $6 million a season and Chin-Lung Hu for, I dunno, Graham Godfrey, the trade might begin to move in the general direction of making sense.

could I have his job? It would pay more and I wouldn't have to worry about being chased off a mountain by a wall of flame.

oh c'mon zonis,
we've seen BB take on bad contracts in the past in order to shed some of the same. I can see us taking on Pierre if we're able to dump a on-the-decline and damaged, Eric Chavez. And I'm sure it won't be a straight up trade but would have to include other particulars. Someone mentioned them tossing in Andy LaRoche.

You think people here were/are pissed at Kendall, Kotsay, and Chavez for their low production:salary ratios? (And I'm with PT: Chavez' actually hasn't been low at all.) Having Pierre on the team, even if only for a brief time, would have inspired us to reach new heights of loathing and invective.

Chavez is an overpaid walking dead player.
Coming off of 3 surgeries and he's already having back issues again.
It pains me, because I really, REALLY like watching him play, but I have a feeling that we're watching him crumble before our eyes. I'll be very, very surprised if he returns to being even a serviceable player ever again.

As I predicted!
Peanutball 3: Seven Games In May.
As I neared the clubhouse I was grabbed from behind and dragged into a small office. It was Steve Vucinich again. His fingers were bleeding."Stomper, this is insane. New blank jerseys are rolling in on pallets, and look at the letters Billy's giving me. P-I-E-R-R-E. F-I-G-G-I-N-S. P-O-S-E-D-N-I-K. And look at these, for God's sake!"
On the wall behind me hung white, gray and green tops bearing the names Coleman, Butler, and Dykstra. Vuc started sobbing. "I bought in, we all bought in. We read the damn book, learned what OPS+ meant, and laughed at the old schoolers with their heads in the sand. Now this!" One last white jersey slipped off his desk and dropped at my feet. Number 10. Morgan.

am i buying a rumor like this. Trading for Pierre seems to go against what the a's are trying to do. And that's not even taking his astronomical contract into consideration.

where, exactly, does it say Billy wants to acquire Pierre?
According to a major-league source, Oakland recently inquired about the Dodgers' Juan Pierre.

Ha Ha, Real Funny Chavvy / Joey Devine = Damaged Goods
"I'm going to be like, 'Hey, can I get one of those, too?' " Chavez joked. There's a big difference between the two in that Chavez's epidural is a cortisone shot rather than a painkiller.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"In other A's back news, reliever Joey Devine did some flat-ground throwing Monday. Devine also has been sidelined by back spasms and has a tear of the L5-S1 vertebrae, the same one that Chavez had repaired."
What is it with the Braves sending damaged goods. First Dan Meyer. Now, Joey Devine. And how serious is a tear of the L5-S1 vertebrae? Sounds pretty serious to me.

Bad rumor everyone, sorry
Hi all - I just blogged that this was bad info. I do try to check stuff out but didn't get a chance to really do so last night and I'm told it was way off. One reason I put it at the bottom of a bunch of three dot items was because I hadn't had the opportunity to run it by any A's people, but I should have sat on it until getting more info.
My original source is usually pretty reliable, but this time of year, there's a ton flying around and sorting it all out becomes difficult.

You're being too kind to Juan Pierre ...
he's Jason Kendall now ... and, unfortunately for their teams, neither player has any health concerns. Pierre hasn't missed a game since he left Colorado in the winter of 02-03 -- which is remarkable both for his durability and the fact that his managers kept writing his name into the lineup ... He also gets a green light in Carroll's system
