If you're bored and mad at Direct TV...

I just found this gem on the Direct TV and though you all might be in the mood to send in some complaint emails:

We experienced temporary technical difficulties early this morning which resulted in some channels not being available to customers (the majority of our channels were not affected). We have since corrected the problem.

In the case of the Red Sox game, any customers who have NESN or ESPN2 in HD were able to see the entire game. For customers who watch NESN in Standard Definition (SD), we were able to bring the channel back at the top of the seventh inning. For customers who watch ESPN2 in SD the channel came back on later, after the game was over.

We deeply apologize, particularly to Red Sox fans, for any inconvenience this may have caused.

(emphasis mine)

Excuse me, "particularly to Red Sox fans"?!?  What are we, invisible here?!  Like I wasn't already completely steamed about this whole broadcasting fiasco, and now they put out this insulting apology?

If you've got a minute, give them a call, or send them an email:

Absolute horseshit.

I may give them a call and I'm a Comcast customer.

I don't even have any words for how ridiculous this whole thing is. I mean, I'm sort of used to being overshadowed by teams from the east coast, particularly the Red Sox, but COME ON!! So obnoxious. I'm sure even if (when?) the A's win tonight all the headlines will still be about the Red Sox.

Red Sox vs Athletics to Be Re-Aired Today

We experienced temporary technical difficulties early this morning which resulted in some channels not being available to customers (the majority of our channels were not affected). We have since corrected the problem.

In the case of the Red Sox game, any customers who have NESN or ESPN2 in HD were able to see the entire game. For customers who watch NESN in Standard Definition (SD), we were able to bring the channel back at the top of the seventh inning. For customers who watch ESPN2 in SD the channel came back on later, after the game was over.

We deeply apologize, particularly to Red Sox and Oakland As fans, for any inconvenience this may have caused.

For those who missed it, NESN will replay the game today beginning at 11 PM ET. If you were unable to record the original broadcast of the game on your DVR, you can now record the re-airing of the game. If you're away from your TV, you can use DVR scheduler on your PC or mobile phone to schedule your recording.

Hmmm, well, they did spell Oakland right, so baby steps I guess

Still miffed, but at least they changed it!

I'm still not over my lovely TIVO dying and being replaced with the substandard joke they call the DVR. I hate that thing.

We exist? Wasn't aware.

it was disappointing, but on the brightside

I called DirecTV and they gave me Showtime free for a month.

I'd had rather watched the game, but free stuff is free stuff.

Despite the fact that you returned and updated your site it is outrageous that you would so blatantly pander to the Red Sox team & fans and show only hubris and disregard for those of us who are Oakland A's fans, live on the West Coast and tried since 3:00 a.m. to watch the HOME Team, Oakland Athletics compete against the Red Sox. How dare you specifically apologize to the Red Sox fans while ignoring and disregarding paying Oakland Athletics fans !!!
We as fans of the Oakland Athletics deserve a specific apology. I have long encouraged friends and family to enroll in direct TV & TIVO. After this , it appears that Comcast is a much better deal. Do not think for a minute that fans of this team are not sending this blatant offense to others. Do not underestimate the power of the internet !!!.The very least that can be done is to provide an apology and a credit for those of us who were not only unable to enjoy the game, but were insulted in the process.

Damn Skippy , Poppy!

Pity the fool who tries to get between me & my A's.

One other amazing thing.I never realized that the sideways flip of the bird did not require any practice or prior choreography. Down right instinctual.

I was at the last A's game in Phoenix , A's vs Angels. I told my friend Terri that after seeing fielding error after fielding error that gave the Angels the win, we would be in for a long season. Oh Ron Washington........

And I guess what drove me over the top was Derek Fisher of the L.A.Fakers and that phony foul call against my Warriors. Both of my teams lost in OT!! Unreal!!!

wtf?

Calling DirecTV just made me more pissed off.

Her" "Ma'am, the technical issues have been resolved." Really? Thanks a ton, DirecTV.

Me: "So, the game is being replayed on NESN at ten, right?"

Her: "Yes, however, you will not be able to see the replay if you do not currently subscribe to NESN."

Me: "Great, so I got up at the 4:00 this morning to watch the game - which wasn't on - and now I won't be able to see the REPLAY because I pay $149 for EI but I don't have NESN?"

Her: "Not unless some 'local' channel picks it up."

Me: [silence]

Her: "Have I answered all your questions?"

Me: [throws chair]

Rich, honey, it is now up to you to salvage my week. I don't want to put a ton of pressure on you, keeper of my heart, but Fer-Fer needs you right now. She needs to see you do okay tomorrow or she won't be a happy camper. That means 1) healthy, 2) effective, 3) efficient. That's all I'm asking for.

My comment on the situation

paraphrased from what I posted at ShysterBall:

DirecTV feels compelled to apologize to Red Sox fans. It feels quite comfortable, however, telling Oakland A's fans to stick it.

This is OK, however, because as everyone knows, Oakland A's games are only ever watched by robots.

Here's what I sent and what I got back:

Sent:

"Regarding the phrase in the subject line: there was another team (the Oakland Athletics) playing in this baseball game and, as amazing as it may sound, this team (the Oakland Athletics) has fans that wanted to watch the game, too.

There is more than one pack of baseball fans in this country; just the ask the thousands of people that subscribed to your service at the beginning of this year.

Please pay careful attention to how you treat your customers and take special notice as to how your letters and or notices are phrased."

Response:

"Thank you for writing. We certainly did not mean to trivialize the loyalty and pride that fans of the Oakland Athletics exhibit towards their team, and I am very sorry that our public statement in regards to this morning's outage singled out our customers who favor the Boston Red Sox.

At the time that this statement was written, the majority of the phone calls and emails we received were from Boston fans; however, we recognize that this is not a valid reason to exclude supporters of the A's organization. Please accept my apology on behalf of DIRECTV for the frustration this situation has caused you.

Thanks again for writing, we appreciate your patience and understanding."

Damn right.

Why don't you guys

quit direct TV over this and tell them that's the reason that you decided to try another service? That would be more effective. They'd pay attention if it hurt their pocketbook.

by IM4Oakgal on Mar 26, 2008 12:45 AM PDT reply actions

I'd really like to know the nature

of their "technical" problem. Why was it so easy to fix during standard working hours EST? I know exactly what time the channel went dark because I was watching the "Rise and Fall of the Spartans." That channel was affected too. By they way.....those Spartan boys had a very nasty disposition.

Could it be because DirecTV is to cheap to call their techs to work in the middle of the night? Eh, they were probably all watching the Red Sox in HD.

Seriously?

You guys have nothing better to do then complain about not being mentioned in an apology note? I mean, sure it's one thing to be upset about missing the game but to get upset because DirecTV was particularly apologetic to Red Sox fans and not A's fans is, well, a little self observed. I apologize to anyone who is offended by this, particularly the ones who need to get over themselves.

by methodrampage on Mar 26, 2008 7:13 AM PDT reply actions

Do you mean...

self obsessed? I think it's pretty outrageous that the A's fans were not apologized to at the same time as the Sox fans...it is further proof of our second class citizen treatment as fans.

by IM4Oakgal on Mar 26, 2008 7:21 AM PDT up reply actions

observed or absorbed, same difference

See, apparently I need to worry more about things I can control like my literacy. Bottom line is DirecTV doesn't really give a damn about Oakland A's fans watching games is SD, as that demographic relatively insignificant.
