Shannon Stewart makes Blue Jays squad
Looks as thought Shannon Stewart will make the opening day roster for the Blue Jays as they have decided to cut Reed Johnson. Now, if I'm not mistaken, does that mean that the A's now pick up an extra draft pick? Now we'll see if I figured out how to add the link properly.

no draft pick
Since he signed a minor league deal, we don't get a pick.
I think it's kind of a BS loophole, because we did offer him arbitration, so essentially he declined an MLB contract with us to (eventually) take a minor league one elsewhere.

Yeah
that's one stupid loophole. Oh well. We'll just have to beat them down this season.

Dude has a career .281 BA and .342 OBA in 2000+ AB's ...that must qualify as a 'proven major leaguer"

not all that well
He has never made an error in 118 chances as a CFer but his range numbers are poor.
His OBP is very dependant on HBP and his batting average( does that sound familar to a plate blocking with his face catcher we had?) and he really has only had the one good year.
I would pass on mr. reed johnson.

I think MLB will eventually give the A's the pick
so more teams don't trry to do this. I am not saying the Blue Jays did it intentionally, but if teams don't get compensation picks the better players will be available a little later in the draft. A comp 1st player is now a 2nd rounder, and his bonus could suffer

Jays wouldn't have lost a pick
it's hard to believe that depriving some team of a supplemental first round pick is a big consideration for any team.

no, but if you are supposed to have the number 1 or 2 pick in the 2nd round, and there are only
1 or 2, instead of 20 or 30 supplemental picks, the 1st pick of the 2nd round seems a lot better. Here are this years Supp picks.
31. Twins (Hunter)
32. Brewers (Franciso Cordero, A, to Cin)
33. Mets (Glavine)
34. Phillies (Aaron Rowand, A to SF)
35. Brewers (Scott Linebrink, A, to CWS)
36. Royals (David Riske, B, to KC)
37. Giants (Pedro Feliz, B, to Phi)
38. Astros (Trever Miller, B, to TB)
xx. Athletics (possible choice for Mike Piazza or Shannon Stewart)
39. Cardinals (Troy Percival, B, to TB)
40. Braves (Ron Mahay, B, to KC)
41. Cubs (Jason Kendall, B, to Mil)
42. Padres (Doug Brocail, B, to Hou)
43. Diamondbacks (Livan Hernandez, B, to Min)
44. Yankees (Luis Vizcaino, B, to Col)
45. Red Sox (Eric Gagne, B, to Mil)
xx. Athletics (possible choice if both Piazza and Stewart yield compensation)
46. Padres (Mike Cameron, B, to Mil
That is 15 or more players, that will be gone before whoever is picking 1st in the 2nd round. What if more teams signed the players to a minor league contract, but negotiated the major league contract before. The A's did that with Sweeney, but Royals never offered Arbitration.

Me thinketh
I think that MLB will give the A's a draft pick. When you write a book basically mocking GM's they are bound to try to find ways to screw you and I have a suspicion that maybe this is an example of the Blue Jays trying to avoid strengthening the A's with the signing of Stewart. I think what will tilt the scales is that after his season with the A's and his history, it was laughable that he would not make the team.

Well wasn't J.P. a part of the Moneyball staff, so I doubt he resents Billy

J.P. and Billy are pals
I'm sure he doesn't "resent" him. On the other hand, I'm not at all sure he wouldn't exploit a rules loophole to give his pal Billy a little smackdown. All in good fun, of course, and I'm sure J.P. knows the League might take it away.

Doesn't Stewart
have even a weaker throwing arm than Luis Gonzalez and Juan Pierre?
