Open Thread: A's vs. Hanshin Tigers
Fresh off a thrilling 4-3 win over the host Yomiuri Giants, Bobby Crosby and the A's return to the Tokyo Dome this evening to take on Lew Ford and the Hanshin Tigers. Justin Duchscherer gets the start for the Green and Gold. Game time: 8:05pm Pacific. You can catch the action on MLB TV once again.
Lineup:
Buck - RF
Ellis - 2B
Cust - DH
Brown - LF
Crosby - SS
Barton - 1B
Suzuki - C
Hannahan - 3B
Denorfia - CF
So far, the U.S. teams are 2-0 versus their Japanese counterparts as the Red Sox beat Hanshin 6-5 late Friday evening on the strength of a Big Papi solo shot, a J.D. Drew three-run shot and an RBI single from Kevin Youkilis.
The big story for the A's so far in this Japan trip continues to be the offensive output of Bobby Crosby. He went 2-for-3 with his 4th homer of the exhibition season last evening, showing some impressive and encouraging opposite-field power. Jack Hannahan followed Crosby in the 4th inning with his own solo shot, crushing a hanging slider into the cheap seats in right-center. Dana Eveland pitched effectively for 5 innings, striking out 3, walking two and giving up 2 runs. With the exception of Rule Fiver Fernando Hernandez, the bullpen shut down the Giants as Santiago Casilla, Andrew Brown and Huston Street each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Duchscherer will look to be economical this evening as he'll be operating with an 80-pitch pitch count.
Look out for: Jeff Fiorentino wearing a pink kimono in the dugout. Susan Slusser reports that elderly-yet-still mischievous Alan Embree stole Jeff's clothes after the game last night in retaliation for Jeff harassing him at a party on Friday.

Am I the only one who loves silly "hazing" like this?
But absolutely hates typical frat boy hazing that is borderline illegal?

Some great things about the Hanshin Tigers
1. They have the second-best fight song in the world of sports (I defer to "The Autumn Wind is a Raider").
Dashing swiftly through the wind blowin' from Rokko
Like the big sun soaring in the clear blue sky
Mighty spirit of the youth shows the victor's grace
The name that shines in glory "Hanshin Tigers"
Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Hanshin Tigers
Hooray, Hooray, Hooray, Hooray!
2. Their fans are insanely devoted , and farther down in this article it's revealed that their stadium staff have high standards:

3. They have a great legendary curse.
The candy and the baseball all night long: )

The wave is possibly the single most asinine thing in sports
And it should be illegal and punishable by, at least, death. But I'd be willing to listen to ideas on a more severe penalty.

Too late - he pitched early this morning
(5 IP, 7 hits, 2 ER). It's Duke tonight.
Is the game on 106.9? The newspaper says yes (also says the game is at 5:00pm), but there's no pre-game show on right now.

I guess - he walked 2, K'd 3
Sounds pretty solid, though it was against what I guess would be considered AAAA competition. Better than Gaudin, though (5 IP, 4 ER in a minor league game, IIRC).

Rotoworld news: Chavez shut down until his back feels better
A's head trainer Steve "Soupy" Sales:
"His left side is keeping him from bending over," Sayles said. "He said his right side is OK, but the left side is not doing as well as we'd hoped, so we're gonna shut him down and have to start completely over. We have to get him back into rehab and get this taken care of.
We're not as far back as we were [before Chavez started hitting], but we are starting all over. ... Square one."

by kapers on Mar 22, 2008 8:13 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Okay, I've just discovered an AN 3.0 compatibility problem with mlbtv
Since one of the really big advantages of 3.0 is the auto-update combined with the new comments box and the shading, I want to keep auto-update on. But mlbtv is usually 10 to 20 seconds behind the action. So I read Jennifer's "Bitch!" comment long before Buck's liner. Okay, that wasn't much of a tell, since I just assumed Jennifer was saying "Bitch!" for some random reason. But then i read the descriptions of the play itself.
Have to think about how to handle this...

What I notice (and it's driving me crazy)
is that when a new comment is coming - which is often on a game thread! - AN freezes for a moment as I am typing my comment (won't let me type). Very annoying.
