Revisited: Eveland potentially next haren
Back in December, I posted a short analysis of eveland and Cgon, putting up the possibility of Haren trade being Mulder trade part II with eveland and Cgon being the new Haren and barton in the trade. see link.
http://www.athleticsnation.com/2007/12/16/15449/582
The gist of the conventional wisdom at AN during that time was Eveland is fat and has some pretty good minor league numbers, but his major league numbers suck.
However, he has been pretty lights out in spring training and people are starting to take notice. He'll likely become the A's fifth starter, and if he carries on his spring training numbers into the regular season, he'll be a pretty damn good fifth starter.
1.20 ERA in 15 innings over four starts. "He just goes after hitters with a good fastball," outfielder Ryan Sweeney says. "And he has a really good front-door slider to left-handed batters."
And as I mentioned in my december post, he pitched well in the Mexican League. His recent numbers have been outstanding although they haven't exactly been in the regular season of the major leagues.
I personally think Eveland is going to shine this year. Not quite the ace, but good enough to make the Haren trade look brilliant.
So I have attached a poll here for you guys.

I believe
Eveland has the potential to someday be as good as Haren, but is most likely a couple years away from that. I don't see a 4.5 ERA for him being out of reach this year though. Hopefully I'm wrong and he finishes the year with a 0.00 ERA and 180k's/0BB's. That would be pretty sweet.

Eveland
I think he'll throw a Sub 4.50 ERA out there this season. It's all about comfort for Eveland. He knows it's his job, and now we'll really see how his Minor League Stats translate to the AL.

A sub 4.50 ERA
makes him an above-average starting pitcher. That would be amazing.

Question re:
"The gist of the conventional wisdom at AN during that time was Eveland is fat and has some pretty good minor league numbers, but his major league numbers suck."
Has any of that been proven to be untrue so far? :-)

Well,
apparently he's lost some weight, but the problem there is we lose the David Wells comparisons.

I was going to say the same thing.
None of that is untrue.
Neither is this: "1.20 ERA in 15 innings over four starts."
Those are all verifiable facts, as devo mentioned. The question is, what does he project to do going forward?

Seriously?
I'm the only one so far out of 100+ to think he'll be a bust? The spring numbers are good and make me hopeful, but it's 15 innings. Everything so far has been amazing minor league numbers, amazingly bad major league numbers. I hope I'm wrong and he is a good starter this year, but I'll have to see more than 15 innings against spring training competition to change my mind when looking at past performance.

Same here
I hope I'm wrong, but he needs to prove over some time during the regular season that he can hold his own. I'll admit I'm biased watching some of his performances as a Brewer here in Milwaukee though.
