Open Thread: Spring Training Game 22 and 23 - A's vs. Angels, A's at Cubs
Rich Harden will be taking on the Angels at Phoenix Muni. A's killer Ervin Santana is the opposing starter. Joe Blanton draws travel time to go to face the Cubs.
This is their last respective starts before the green and gold board a plane and head out to Japan. It's hard to believe, but the Phoenix portion of the spring comes to a close already.
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!

By the way
I'm watching Marco Scutaro in the Blue Jays/Red Sox game right now. Weird to see him in another uni.

Had a key walk
against Okajima which got him out of the game and got the Jays to get a lead.

The other day I watched
Dan Haren strike out Nick Swisher. It was a little bit depressing even though I don't question either trade.

other "former" A's in that game
Bobby Keilty - 0 for 2 I think
Sal Fasano - HBP in the 8th or 9th, stole 2nd during a 15 pitch at-bat, and then was picked off. weird
A's all the way in 08 . . . oh never mind!

If that's ture...
that's pretty amazing. Mabye he's just throwing his fastball today. Might explain why he's giving up more hits and fewer walks.

I'm starting to think it's a mistake
Looking at the past at bats on Gameday, all four K's were on 3 pitches and every other batter hit the first pitch. That's a little bit too much to believe.

It makes it seem like this writer just wanted to take a jab at Beane while he was "down" (which he is not). So I am not sure, but they the writer doesnt seem to care about our amazing run of winning seasons over the Moneyball time and oh dont mind the injuries last year as well.

Maybe a 32 part series?
I'm guessing we shouldn't hold our breath waiting for an article on every team taking a quick uninformed look at bad draft picks each team made 5 years ago. Or explaining how a general manager has not been perfect in every decision for 8 years.
Honestly, I try to avoid Ringolsby becuase he is an old school hack. I should have stayed away from this one as well. It was almost enough to make me sign up at fox sports so I could respond.

Im still steaming about that Fox Sports Article about Beane
Your 2008 East Bay Athletic Rivercats of the greater Fremont Area!
by asfan777 on Mar 19, 2008 2:35 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Actually the Article was totally correct for what it said.
The ownership didn't allow Billie to spend much on drafts or on Latin America or Asia markets. That is why we had such a bleak minor leagues.
This offseason they added domestic and Latin America, Australian and Asian scouts and provided alot more money to sign them with. I really like what Wolfe has done to allow Beane to inprove the minors so that we don't go down the same road again.
Add to that the offseason condititioning and training and we are in a much better place so that now with all of these great young kids, we may be able to keep them healthy.
But, of course, this is only my personal, perfect, unbiased opinion ;-)
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
by Eastbayjim on Mar 19, 2008 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's not necessarily incorrect
I think what is upsetting is not that that it is lies or incorrect, as much as it is just throwaway comments that could be said of any team in baseball. Every GM misses on some draft picks, every GM makes a bad free agent signing. It's just that some baseball people are still so butt-hurt about Moneyball that they take any chance they can to try and dump on Beane and completely leave out the context of those misses and neglect to mention any of the many successes.
The whole tone of the article seemed to be, "If Beane is so smart why isn't he right with every move every time?", which is just pathetic and lazy writing (read: whining)
by DiegoAsFan on Mar 19, 2008 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I Agree
I agree with your view. But what I liked is that this last offseason showed that it was not Beane so much as management not allowing him to spend the money on drafts or latin America. The article should have pointed out that Beane did good this offseason besides the trades
PS. Whining is not a bad thing.. if we do it
