Japan trip; in jeopardy? Red Sox players voted not to go!
It appears that there is a dispute about coaches and other non players getting paid to participate in the Japan Major League opening day festivities. The red sox have already held a one day strike boycotting their last spring training game today.
Here is the article.
Major league baseball is of course capable of retracting promises made to both the A's and BoSox to be a part of this trip. I wonder if the A's will follow suit or be MLB's lackey boys.
It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

No word on A's reaction yet...
(Of course, I wonder if ESPN even asked...) I'm looking forward to hearing that.
I wonder...if the A's go and the Sox don't, does Oakland get two free wins? Eh...probably not...

i hope the A's
don't follow suit. I would be very disappointed if they sided with the Sox. Why did the Sox players wait so long to complain about it to this degree? I mean, it's not like the Japan trip is something that was decided in the last week or two. To wait until ST was this far along is bs. If they don't show up, they should forfiet the games.

Better yet
stop complaining and just pony up the dough themselves. They make far and way more than they need, what's a 40 grand or two from some of the highest paid players for the opportunity their being given.

The thing is, they shouldn't have to pony up the money themselves after MLB promised it.

Maybe
it's just my screwed up way of looking at things, since i do seem to be in the minority on this subject. I just can't be sympathetic towards the coaches. If they actually needed the money, now that would be a different story.

well the staff
The staff, such as the bullpen catchers, batboys, equipment managers, and ecetera, make very little money. The 40K bonus would likely be more than what many of them made in a year.

But they are paid very, very well relative to the rest of the population.

true
true for the coaches but not for other members of the staff.
That is besides the point though. MLB promised one thing and delivered another. They should not be allowed to get away with that.

So, if someone
does not need the money, regardless of the question of whether anyone has a right to define someone else's "need", they should not be paid the agreed upon sum?

RE:
Hey guys, Randy from OverTheMonster.com here...
The reason why it came up now is because Terry Francona heard from an A's coach that they were getting paid. Francona thought it was awkward one coaching staff would and the other wouldn't, so he looked into it to find out no coaches were getting paid. But in the original agreement it said all the coaches would be getting paid, so the players feel like (to put it simply) the MLB is dickin' them around. The Red Sox realize the coaches are as vital to the team as the players, and they don't want them to get screwed over.

I admire the solidarity
I admire the solidarity that the BoSox players are showing towards their coaches and more importantly their staff. If MLB promised a bonus to the coaches and staff and is not following suit or some how attempting to change the agreement they should be forced to honour it. I wonder if the same agreement was made with the A's (I don't see why not). I hope that the A's players will protect their staff in the same manner.

If that's the reason, then good for them. I hope A's players follow suit. I just hope Schilling isn't the ring leader of this brigade.

According to the ESPN broadcast
According to comments stated by the announcers on the ESPN and mlb.tv broadcast the A's are planning to follow suit.
It does appear that Schilling is vocal in this (and I do cringe when I hear him talk), as if that is surprising, but from what I can gather the motivation is to protect the coaches and staff.
It appears that the players are taking care of those around them.

I have been in a position in which I did a lot that I was not paid for. You and I both should not be put in that position. The players are doing this for the coaches and staff, people who do not generally have the resources that the players do.

how much i make in a year. If i'm making 30k annually, hell no. But if i'm making 150k +, yes. Athletics Fan and Runner stated above that some of the coaches, bullpen catchers, etc. make less than 40k a year. If that's true, then i am willing to admit that i am wrong and the boycott is justified.

coaches make about 60 to 100K a year
I believe that is the case.
As far as peripheral staff, I think that it is about 30 to 40 K a year. I applied for a job with the blue jays when I lived in downtown Toronto, and the salary would have been about 32K a year, Canadian.

Now, the players are covered by a collective bargaining agreement, which you'd have to read to understand their rights as employees. But I do not think the coaches and other folks are so covered.

(Presuming that the A's are willing to go):
Two forfeits would be the literal decsion to make, but I'd suspect that rather than that, they'd schedule the two games for Oakland, probably one during the first week of the season and possibly a day/night DH when the Red Sox are back in May.

IN 'R OUT
Assuming that the coaches compensation was in fact in the contract, this is a bad move by MLB.
What I would have liked to see was the BoSox players talking with the A's players and staff to see where they stand and why before broadcasting their decision. I also would have liked to see a joint effort instead of just the Sox taking it on.
To the A's and their fans it smacks of arrogance as the important franchise that is the leveraging figure of the matter and the A's are a relegated fodder team to play against.
I would like to hear reasons from the MLB as to why (if it was in the contract) that the coaches are not to be paid the bonus. If there is a legitimate legal reason that - lets face it, players aren't exactly lawyers - then the top paid players will donate their bonus to pay for the coaches.

Check out the Red Sox game video feed right now. The Sox are delaying the start of the game (not taking the field) due to the dispute. WOW!
So basically it was the player's greed on the Sox to begin with according to that note on SFGate. If that's true then I can continue to hate the Sox adnausium and revel in the fact that they are being sooooooo inconvenienced to go to Japan that they had to reschedule the A's home opener for a DAY GAME!
Seriously guys, lets not lose sight of whose getting the favors.
It's just more exciting with Billy Beane running the team.

First of all, what took the Sox so long
to protest this trip - I've been protesting it for months!
Second of all, I think the Red Sox should protest the trip by going and then throwing the games. Right, Sox - isn't that a great idea?

It doesn't matter
If the Red Sox were sticking up for the staff, or if they were just being greedy ..... I hate them like I've never hated anything in my life.

Agreeing once again
According to the article now up on SFGate the Red Sox were initially going to be paid 25K a pop and that included all staff. But then the Greed Sox held out for 40K and all the money that was left for that portion from the promoters basically was soaked up paying for the players.
So everyone was going to get 25K ---> RedSox players hold out ----> no money left for staff ---> sox players think they're God's gift to baseball ------> no money to pay coaches ------> Players blame MLB for no money to pay coaches -------> Greed Sox look like Heros.
It's just more exciting with Billy Beane running the team.

i don't know what the real story is
the worst part about all this is it gives the media more of a reason to fawn over the f'ing red sox.
