DLD (3/18/08): Roster set for Japan

Slusser on Roster , Urban On 5th spot , Urban on "Cry Baby" Linden , Kaegel on Mike Sweeney

Minor League Picture Gallery,  Minor League Notes and Video

According to Slusser

Star-divide

The A's announced their travel list for Tokyo, and everyone remaining in camp, except nonroster outfielder Todd Linden and injured players Eric Chavez, Chad Gaudin, Carlos Gonzalez and Kiko Calero, will be on the plane.
That means spots for extra outfielder Jeff Fiorentino, catcher Justin Knoedler, and infielders Brooks Conrad and Gregorio Petit. Three of those are likely to be left off the 28-man roster for the big-league games, assuming Chavez is not placed on the DL to start the season.
With that in mind andeux offered this roster: Pitchers: Blanton, Harden, Duchscherer (inactive), Eveland (inactive), Street, Embree, Foulke, Casilla, Brown, DiNardo, Braden and Hernandez. Batters: Suzuki, Barton, Ellis, Crosby, Cust, Denorfia, Buck, M. Sweeney, Bowen, Brown, R. Sweeney, Murphy, Hannahan, Johnson, Petit (inactive), Fiorentino (inactive), Conrad, and Knoedler.

when I first opened the DLD today, the above block-quoting wasn't showing up, so I couldn't figure out your post, but now I can see it (and it is some fancy pants block-quoting.) So that's odd that the block quotes seem to not appear sometimes for some users.

Gaudin

He pitched a nice two innings last game. I'm not to sure the A's would want to place him on the DL as there's still time for him to get 100% healthy for his April 12th start.

Gaudin

They can still put him on the DL and he would be eligible before the 12th

Chavez

On the flip side, I'd be surprised if Chavez were put on the DL, since the A's would want him to play as soon as they think he's ready. And they can't do any of that retroactive DL-ing either.

In terms of Gaudin,

I think it might be a bit difficult to make the case that a player is "disabled" if he's pitching in spring games. It's not just an excuse to put an extra guy on the 25-man roster-- there has to be an actual medical reason for it.

I'm not sure they want to put R Sweeney

the bench. It's possible they'd prefer to have him play regularly. that would mean either making the club as a starter or starting in Sacramento.

I think Calero is a good candidate for the 60 day DL.

Non-A's scouts have been quoted as saying that Foulke doesn't look sharp. Whiel the a's have ssaid publicly that he looks like "the Foulke they know", if he's not sharp (in addition to not being able to pitch his fastball above the low 80's) he might not be a lock to make the club.

by OaklandSi on Mar 18, 2008 8:30 AM PDT reply actions

i don't see the purpose

of signing Foulke for any reason other than trying to flip him before the deadline for more prospects. Typical buy low sell high type of move. The only problem with this is that now he is going to eat up a roster spot that could be used by one of the younger guys to improve the team and//or gain valuable experience. I just don't see Foulke improving this team. At best, he could serve as a stop-gap. But is a stop-gap in the bullpen really needed at this time? Especially one that is so risky. Hopefully he can perform well enough to net the team some prospects at a later date. I, for one, am not so optimistic about this working out though.

It was an amazing revolution

back in the early 1980s when SportsCenter first appeared. We were used to getting A's and Giants highlights on the 11 p.m. local news and then the other MLB scores were quickly read off graphics. Suddenly we had 20-25 minutes of MLB highlights covering most of the games each night on the late SportsCenter. It was a great show in the early years, but sometime in the 1990s it was decided that hard sports reporting wasn't exciting enough and it needed to be turned into an entertainment show. Of course the same thing has happened over at CNN's news operation.

Roster finalized

Slusser has the scoop

So it looks like this:
25-Man Roster in Japan: Blanton, Harden, Dinardo, Braden, Street, Embree, Brown, Casilla, Hernandez, Foulke, Barton, Johnson, Sweeney, Ellis, Crosby, Murphy, Hannahan, Cust, Denorfia, Buck, Sweeney, Brown, Fiorentino, Suzuki, Bowen
On Roster, inactive against Boston Eveland, Duchscherer, Chavez (not making trip)
Making trip, not on roster Conrad, Petit, Knoedler

by andeux on Mar 18, 2008 10:28 AM PDT reply actions

Actually

not quite finalized I guess. Petit could be active for those 2 games instead of Fiorentino, depending on whether they want an extra OF or IF.

"Tomorrow it may rain." - Leo Durocher

by andeux on Mar 18, 2008 10:31 AM PDT up reply actions

Let's sort through this (again)

C - Suzuki
1B - Barton
2B - Ellis
SS - Crosby
3B - Hannahan
LF - Cust
CF - R. Sweeney
RF - Buck
DH - M. Sweeney
4th OF - Denorfia
5th OF - Brown
IF - Murphy
1B - Johnson
C2 - Bowen
UTIL - Fiorentino

SP - Blanton
SP - Harden
SP - Duke (Inactive)
SP - Eveland (Inactive)

LHP - Braden
LHP - DiNardo
RHP - Hernandez
RHP - Brown
RHP - Casilla
LHP - Embree
RHP - Foulke
RHP - Street

What we see here is that Fiorentino and one of R. Sweeney/Denorfia will go to AAA when Eveland and Duke are activated on March 28th or so. Brown is all but assured to be the 4th OF. If Chavy gets activated before the American opener, I wouldn't be at all surpirsed to see DJ traded (in fact, I'd be surprised if it didn't happen.) Relegating Hannahan to backup status, with the bench consisting of Bowen, Brown, Murphy, and Hannahan.

Gaudin could start the season on the DL until the second week of April, at which point I would expect Braden to be sent down to set the rotation at: Harden, Blanton, Duke, Eveland, Gaudin.

Keith Law...

says something positive about the A's? (Again, I like the guy alot, although many of you don't):

Dana Eveland continued his bid for a spot in the Oakland rotation with another strong outing, ripping through five innings against the Royals without giving up a run. His fastball was down a bit from his previous start, as he pitched mostly at 88 but threw some fastballs as low as 85 mph. But his secondary stuff was strong, including a curveball with good depth and a sharp slider that he used as his out pitch. Even more impressive was the presence of a clear pitching plan: get ahead with curveballs and fastballs, put hitters away with the slider, show the changeup to lefties and see if they'll chase it off the outside corner. Eveland reminds me a lot of Ted Lilly, with a little less fastball and an inferior changeup; both are lefties who reached the majors with shaky control and reputations as head cases, both feature four-pitch repertoires, and both have multiple weapons to get swings and misses. Lilly blossomed as a starter when he went to the big ballpark in Oakland and didn't have to worry about giving up fly balls. The same could be true for Eveland this year.

Then there's this towards the end:

Keith Foulke struggled to get through his one inning, with the same stuff he showed the other day. Mike Sweeney's comeback is also sputtering, as he doesn't have the bat speed to get around on average fastballs. He's had two hits in his last four games, one of which was a home run on an 85 mph fastball.

mccovey chronicles

If Sabean played chess...

todd linden fans:

Among players in their 20s, only one seems destined for an everyday role - and don't count on first baseman Daniel Ortmeier, 26. Because Ortmeier is hitting .167, the Giants are considering playing Aurilia at first base and moving Kevin Frandsen, 25, to third, where he has played in recent days after Ray Durham took control at second base.

Ortmeier's job isn't in jeopardy because he hit .262/.333/.430 in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League last season. Ortmeier's job isn't in jeopardy because his abysmal walk-to-strikeout ratio in the majors last season indicates that pitchers will quickly adjust to him. Ortmeier's job isn't in jeopardy because he's had about 30 or so games at first base in his career, and his offense isn't worth the defensive hit the team will take.

Ortmeier's job is in jeopardy because of 45 spring at-bats.

Think about that. After the equivalent of nine full regular-season games, the Giants said, wait, we can't start this guy! Gasp! Forget that spring stats are worthless; forget that players like Pedro Feliz, Todd Linden, and Lance Niekro tore up Scottsdale last spring. Forget that Brian Dallimore hit .500 in 2005 while Moises Alou hit .228. This time, they're worthy of determining starting spots.

Thousands of times, Sabean has stood on dugout steps sizing up his team in the spring. He wears a beard that has gone white and he speaks softly and he is decisive and an aura of strength wafts off him. He keeps things to himself as strong people do, and he is a man who is ahead of the game -- if he played chess, he'd plan seven moves in advance.

The lists above serve to illustrated just one of the problems, the sample size issue. If Victor Diaz can pop six homers in two weeks, or Ruben Gotay can hit .436, or Sergio Mitre can post a sub-1.00 ERA, then how seriously can you take 50 at-bats or 15 innings? That’s what the exhibition season is: small samples blown up to have meaning because they’re ripped completely out of context. A player’s performance in the tiny sample sizes of March is no more significant than it would be in a tiny sample size of June (or, as above, May 17 through June 5 of 2007; thanks to William Burke for the help), but because the industry has it in their heads that March is meaningful, these numbers, these performances, are treated as important.

Granted I haven't started law school yet, but that's nothing like a statement of collusion.

You can't infer collusion (without actual documents proving it) unless there's no other reasonable explanation for a team's behavior. Even if it's a bad reason. There's no way on earth anyone will ever be able to prove that about Bonds, given the unbelievable number of bad reasons not to sign him. (Team chemistry, etc etc.)

Keri: Is there just an industry-wide philosophy that says, "Wink, wink, we're not going to do this"?

That's not even a standard nondenial-denial. It's not even a nondenial. And it's a pretty clear statement that Forst knows something about Keri's hypothesis that he's unwilling to disseminate.

Obviously, I'm not saying this is prima facie evidence -- more that Forst has a lousy poker face (and probably feels too comfortable with Keri to maintain it).

Of course, given Bonds' unique history with the MLBPA (especially regarding his opting out of the royalties deal), it's probably just as unlikely that he gets any union support as it is that any MLB team signs him.

that it's unfair to interpret a non-response as a tacit admission, I don't see why Forst couldn't have simply answered "No" in this case.

And really, there's no plausible on-field reason to sign Mike Sweeney or Emil Brown (even taking defense into account) instead of Bonds. There are plenty of non-baseball reasons, of course - most notably money and "character" - and it will be tough to prove that the teams didn't all come to their decisions independently.

Question for anyone who cares to answer - what's the smallest contract that you think Bonds would accept at this point, given that he apparently has no other offers on the table?

I'd be surprised if he took <$10M

Less than that, and I think he just sits out a year/forever. The only thing he really has to play for is his own pride/satisfaction, and it might be more prideful/satisfying to kiss off any lowball offers.

Agreed

There's a reason why people "refuse to comment" on stories when it would seem to be in their interests to say something, or when it makes them look guilty to do so.

We might be able to infer collusion from Forst's comments (or we might not-- I'm not seeing it, myself, just a lot of teams acting stupid) but his putative collusion suit got bubkus out of that interview from a legal standpoint.

I think Billy taught him that "step outside the question" deflecting technique.

He uses it all the time on various sensitive topics, like Mitchell. It don't mean a thing, cuz it ain't got no zing. I'd hate to rest my collusion case on that. I think we may have "conscious parallelism" at work here, at best, and that's not illegal in the States.

Or maybe he taught Billy, since I hear Forst is "really" running the show.

again, I'm not arguing that Forst's statement proves anything

Just that it seemed an unwisely glib and open-ended response that might lead anglers to cast their lines in his pool to ascertain its ichthyoid population..

Yeah, I know; unwise -- Billy can woodshed him on the plane. Do 747s still come with woodsheds?

Isn't there a small matter of $8.5 million difference between the two?

How much is that, per base?

A's looking for infielders

We feel there are some infielders out there that we can target, too. [Mark] Ellis is on the last year of his deal, Eric [Chavez] and Bobby [Crosby] are both coming off injuries, so we'd want to address our depth in that spot if the opportunity arose.

Of course, following the Xbhaskarx Theorem, this must mean that the A's are not looking for infielders ...

That's terrible news.

Given how I spent most of my younger years, it's only right to invoke the name of one of my favorite books: Childhood's End.

Article on ESPN about Giants abysmal offense...

says last year it was worst in MLB in OPS, now take away Bonds, Klesko, and Feliz and it drops to .672.

Another reminder of how lucky we are to have Beane instead of Sabian.

Fantasy expert has no idea about real baseball

link

Baseball players make outs, lots of them. In fact, making outs only seven out of 10 times is a good thing. Fantasy owners shouldn't care if those outs are large men flailing wildly at curveballs in the dirt or puny little shortstops grounding out to second base.

Uh...making outs seven times out of ten is actually a very bad thing.

Come on...

"Making outs only six point four out of 10 times" has so much less of a ring to it...

ken rosenthal

on the a's:

All quiet on the Joe Blanton front. The pitcher the A's wanted from the Reds in a Blanton package was none other right-hander Johnny Cueto, who appears destined for a spot in manager Dusty Baker's rotation. The A's, meanwhile, remain interested in Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp, envisioning him batting leadoff and becoming productive again at age 28. However, the A's will not break up their emerging young core program to acquire one player

Speaking of the A's, their Class AAA rotation will feature lefties Gio Gonzalez, Greg Smith, Dallas Braden and Dan Meyer, but their rotation at Class A Stockton should be even more impressive. That group will include righty Trevor Cahill, the team's top pick in 2006; righty Henry Rodriguez, who throws 96 to 100 mph; righty Fautino De Los Santos, who came with Gonzalez in the Nick Swisher trade; and lefty Brett Anderson, who, like Smith, arrived in the Dan Haren trade ...
