Open Thread: Spring Training Game 12 - A's at Angels
The A's take on the Angels with Dallas Braden today. The Angels send out Slingblade (aka John Lackey for those of you who might be new to the site).
Keith Foulke is scheduled to make an appearance for the first time this spring training and the first time in an A's uni since 2003. It will be interesting to see how he does and if he has lost a lot off his fastball as has been reported a few times. Course Foulke has never really been about velocity more than pinpoint accuracy, but it can still have a huge impact on his pitching if the difference in velocity between his fastball and changeup has lowered.
Obviously it could be a very rough day for the A's as they're facing the Angels ace and the A's are starting one of their fifth starter candidates. My hope right now is still that no one else gets hurt and that Daric Barton is actually 100 percent.
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!

If his fastball velocity is lower (and I'm sure it is), would his changeup velocity also be lower?

That's a good question
But we shall see.

what if his fastball is *slower* than his changeup?
I wasn't thinking about anything. I'll have to try to do that more often. @('.')@
Whoa, that's trippy.
I think that would create some kind of rip in the space-time continuum. It's like crossing the streams. But worse.

Lackey
I hope his arm falls off. If there is one player in all of baseball that i can't stand, it would have to be him. I find "stuff" in my cat's litter box that's less of a waste of space than him. Now that i have that off my chest.....go A's!!

I'm not sure
I mean, no one can deny the fact that he is tearing it up this spring. Maybe it's because of his numbers with the giants and the marlins. They weren't very impressive, but he should still get the same opportunity as everyone else, which i believe he is. If anything, his recent comments probably hurt his chances more than help them.

last time
I said it last time we played them and they had all their starters playing. It seems like they are playing their spring training games against us as if they were regular season. I think they are trying to prove a point that they are still the heavyweights in the division.

Lack was supposed to only throw 20-30 pitches...
By my unofficial count, he threw at least 30, so there may be nothing wrong.

who's doing these little commentaries

he's been playing toward the end
of most games, in general not facing the top pitchers -- perhaps that's what he was griping about
I've been doing awesome PxP here all spring
And yet the A's haven't offered me a job yet. It really is an unfair organization.
yeah, isn't it?
I was initially puzzled by his complaints, since he's had a fair amount of at bats considering all the outfielders the A's are considering. I did notice that many of them were towards the end of games, when the MLB pitchers are less likely to be pitching (and the MLB position players perhaps less likely to be playing), so maybe that's what he was referring to. Either way it's not a good move on his part.

Zito's line today:
3.2 IP, 5H, 8R, 5ER, 4BB, 0K, 1HR - 17.18 ERA for the spring, which means his ERA actually fell with this outing.
