Crosby to Reds?

Something I ran across on espn.com was that the Reds' starting shortstop has a broken kneecap.  If I am Billy Beane, I am now resurrecting (or amping up) trade talks with the Reds with Blanton as before, and with Crosby as the kicker to get those young talented prospects that the Reds have been hanging on to.  Two birds with one stone.

Crosby has no trade value

no one would purposly acquire him. If we dealt him with Blanton, he'd make the package worse.

They have Jeff Keppinger,

who is just like Crosby except that he's good at baseball.

actually

keppinger is nothing like crosby, BECAUSE he is good at baseball.

They also, apparently, don't like him.

I don't see why he wasn't given the job in the first place.

Sure, *we* know that Crosby doesn't have value, but maybe the Reds don't!

Blanton/Crosby/Embree for Cueto/Votto/Keppinger/Frazier!

Man, I should be a GM.

maybe they don't know that yet!

I would've been 100% in support of this yesterday . . .

but today Crosby hit a two-run jack, reigniting my fears that he turns into a perpetual All-Star the second we ship him out of town. Even if it doesn’t happen, however, I’m not so sure that having Crosby start at short instead of Donnie Murphy is really harming the team that much.

Of course, given today’s news about Chavez’s back, it becomes even more likely that Oakland isn’t going to be competitive for at least another two years, so maybe Billy will be willing to do whatever it takes to get this Blanton deal done. Bailey AND Votto? That’d be nice.

I, too...

... get my hopes raised by the Annual Crosby Spring Training Homer. I'm sure he'll destroy them again by April.

Is Crosby hitting the occasional HR off a pitcher

who belongs in AAA really an indicator of his regular season success?

Of course not

But irrational hope springs eternal.

even game reviewers know. arrrrgghhh!

from: http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/sports/mlb08/news.html?sid=6186163&mode=previews, a review of the MLB 08 The Show PS3 game (can't wait).

"Back in the halcyon Jason Giambi days, the Oakland A's brashly referred to themselves as "dirtbags," so its little wonder that I gave my created shortstop--who I added to the A's roster for spring training--the very same nickname. There's just something special about hearing MLB 08 play-by-play man Matt Vasgersian refer to you as "dirtbag" every time you come up to the plate. I'm a Cubs fan at heart, but because I wanted to play shortstop in road-to-the-show mode, your best bet for landing in the MLB is to find a team that's talent-thin at your chosen position, hence the decision to bring the Dirtbag back to the A's. Besides, if Dirtbag makes it big, I can always demand a trade on his behalf later."

If I were a NL GM, and cost was no object

I'd be tempted to give Crosby a shot. His bat would play better there, and you'd at least know you're getting a plus defender. Crosby has taken a lot of flak for being injured, but his injuries really have been unlucky.

Problem is, he's pretty expensive for a team like the Reds. 2 years, $8.75M (including $5.25M next year) is a substantial investment for such a risk. Were the A's to find a trade partner, they'd need to either eat money or take on money. Our best trade partner would be for a high money, short term contract, since we're well under our payroll ceiling.

So it goes.

Hmmm

I know a team with some dead-weight veteran contracts...

I do believe they've cracked the news recently in these here parts, even.

How much would the Giants give the A's in prospects to have them eat that dreadful Roberts deal?

I thought I liked Roberts

until I really scoured some of his offensive numbers - he's great when he gets on base but he doesn't really get on that much. And he's great getting the ball in the OF but no so great when he has to throw it. Kind of a poor man's Juan Pierre - which is a scary thought.

So do the Giants

That's why they'd be willing (theoretically) to give Oakland a prospect or two.

well, if we're buying bad contracts + prospects ...

... howzabout we put together a package for Zito, Cain, and Lincecum?

I wasn't thinking about anything. I'll have to try to do that more often. @('.')@

by monkeyball on Mar 3, 2008 9:06 AM PST up reply actions

why zito?

Why Zito?

Because we don't have enough soft tossing lefties on the roster!

Plus, we're rolling in money so why not spread the wealth.

I said the Roberts contract is dreadful

It would essentially amount to the A's buying prospects from the Giants (indirectly, of course).

by PaulThomas on Mar 1, 2008 11:39 PM PST up reply actions

Crosby really isn't a "plus defender."

UZR has him at, I think, +1 run per 162 games for his career. That's not good enough for such an awful bat.
