Stew calls out Roger
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/02/28/SPTEVATBE.DTL
Stew is interviewed by John Shea of the Chronicle...and he doesn't hold back against Roger. He even recalls the game 4 of the '90 ALCS where Roger (who was pitching AND wearing eye black) got tossed in the 2nd inning after charging the home plate ump.
This article made me think about guys like Steinbach, Phillips, Blankenship, and Felix Jose.

Man, I love Stew
I seem to remember that right after Canseco's book came out Stew said something along the lines of "I really don't like Jose. He's the worst teammate I ever had. He's arrogant, selfish, and a generally rotten human being. But Jose is not a liar." (very loose paraphrase)
Seems deadly accurate to me.

God bless you, Stew
Some of my fondest memories are of Dave Stewart beating Clemens' brains in.
Thank you for once again hitting the proverbial nail on the head!
I found it interesting to find in the article that Stew's one loss against Clemens happened when Stew was on the Rangers...no wonder I don't remember him ever losing to Clemens!
I saw Stewart beat Clemens in his first game as an Athletic
It was at Fenway in the summer of 1986. It was also one of LaRussa's first games managing Oakland
I was in the bleachers.
It was a great night...made all the better by the role that LaRussa and Stewart would come to play in A's history.

This article makes me wish
That the A's would put up a #34 jersey for Stewart, since it is already retired. Even though he is not in the Hall of fame, I think that he is a very important figure in the history of Athletics baseball, and he deserves the tribute. In many ways he is one of the only players from the great 86-92 teams that we can still be proud of, in the post Steriods era; looking back with all things considered. I say AN, we should start a movement to have Stew's 34 displayed right next to Fingers. They both mean so much in the history of the franchise. AND he is the agent of Eric Chavez as well, who until the 2005 season, was looking like a potential HOF player, not to mention after next year, the player with the longest time spent in an Oakland uniform. RETIRE 34 FOR STEW!!!!!

I loved Stew's fearsome stare from between his glove and the bill of his ballcap. A rotation of Huddy & Stew...would be unbelievably intimidating. He was also born in Oakland. Assuming he's interested, I think the A's should offer Stew whatever type of position he wants to stay in Oakland forever.
Bruce Jenkins, perhaps the most articulate journalist in the Bay Area, had this to say on Stew:
"...Loved John Shea's rundown of the Dave Stewart-Roger Clemens rivalry, which exposed Clemens as an enormous fraud to any fan who followed it closely. Clemens makes my Hall of Fame, but only after Stewart goes in..."

In that piece he also talks about the hallowed Pink Pony bar that serves all things baseball.
Two-thirds of the earth is covered by water, the other third is covered by Kotsay...in his prime...like 3 years ago.

god that is a depressing thought...

good idea
since it was your idea, maybe you should start a fanpost specifically geared towards retiring his number. I'm sure you won't get too many nay-sayers on here.

Stew is still the stopper!
He has never minced words and has always been a great rep for the A's. I second the nomination for Stew's number retirement.

I bet that AN is a loud enough voice that we could get the front office to hear us. Lets do it. Stew gets 34 on the wall!

Lets do it
I think the Athletics really should focus on the history alot more. To me its a damn shame the Rickey Henderson is the firts base coach for the Mets, and Carney Lansford is the hitting coach for the Gants. Both of them should be in the Oakland organization right now....

agreed
For as much as I love the A's I am disappointed about what you speak of. It is a shame that Rickey is part of another organization. Lansford should have been in the orgainization years ago.
I did have a baseball coach when I was a kid who was a huge giants fan. He would mock the A's as much as he could (even at age 14 I shouted, "1989!" in response, often). Lansford was one of his targets. Whenever anybody would hit a ball off of the label of the bat he would infer that was somehow similar to lansford (as if somebody could hit .290 for their career and be fully lucky. I imagine that this coach's head would explode if I mentioned a career 111OPS+?). I smile thinking the headache my former coach has thinking about Lansford as the hitting coach for his team. Then again, he roots for the giants so he has much bigger problems.

I Still <3 Dave Stewart
What a class act. This guy is honest and direct. A strong role model and a fantastic pitcher.
