Oakland Athletics 2008. What did we lose, and why are we going to be so bad??

Looking at BBG's front page Diary Fanpost, and other posts from A's fans, and baseball writers in general.  I wanted to know, what we really lost this offseason that can't be replaced.  Is Nick's enthusiasm, and love for the game worth 5 - 10 wins?  This is a fan article, not a stats arrticle per say, since I didn't include minutia, but it is fun to talk about anyway.  Go ahead and peck away at the information to follow.

Let's look at the stats for what we lost last year, since there are more statheads here,(you guys)  than knuckleheads (me)

Dan Haren

SPLIT G IP H R HR BB SO W L Sv P/GS WHIP BAA ERA
Season 34 222.2 214 91 24 55 192 15 9 0 107.1 1.21 .247 3.07

That is 15 wins from last year that Duke, Harden(remember he only had 1 win last year), and our band of merrry 5th starters, must match.  Who cares what the ERA is, I am looking at straight record.  Dan is the only significant arm we lost.

Offensively

Nick Swisher

Season 150 539 84 141 36 1 22 78 3 .262 .381 .455

Dan Johnson( He played 117 games, but won't see that many this year.)

Season 117 416 53 98 20 1 18 62 0 .236 .349 .418

Shannon Stewart

Season 146 576 79 167 22 1 12 48 11 .290 .345 .394

Mike Piazza

Season 83 309 33 85 17 1 8 44 0 .275 .313 .414

That is 60 hr's and 233 RBI's. Those players offensive numbers will need to be duplicated, or exceeded by the following players

Eric Chavez

Season 90 341 43 82 21 2 15 46 4 .240 .306 .446

Even in Eric's 2nd worst year to this he had 7 more homers, and 36 more RBI's.  That replaces Piazza's missing runs

Bobby Crosby, Donnie Murphy, and Hannahan will combine to equal Scutaro and Shannon Stewart, which leaves Nick Swishers 22 HR's and 78 RBi's.  Since we got nothing from Jason Kendall, whatever Kurt Suzuki gives us will go towards replacing that.  Emil Brown should drive in as many runs as Shannon Stewart.

Emil Brown

Season 113 366 44 94 13 1 6 62 12 .257 .300 .347

Then we have the young kids.

Minors .270 105 397 50 107 17 2 10 47 158 48 71 8 5 .348 .398 .746

With the additions, and moderate health, this team will be just as good as last year, and with 130 games from Chavy, Crosby, and 30 starts from Harden we can compete for the West.
