A's opening in Japan then....
Coming back and playing 3 exhibition games vs SF??
Does that seem odd to anyone else
I guess thats good because a healthy Harden will get an extra meaningful start in the regular season and give us a slim chance to start the season on the right foot.
But as we all know Healthy and Harden are words that we don't hear to often.
Anyways... Go A's and stay healthy

It gives them several days
to recover from the travel demands of the Japan trip before re-starting the regular season on April 1.
It does put the A's at a competitive disadvantage in the "Bay Bridge Series" against the Giants. Gosh darn it. Meanwhile, the Red Sox will go to L.A. for a weekend series against the Dodgers, and one of those games will be played in the L.A. Coliseum. That should be fun to watch.
I like it that the A's are playing this series in Japan. Those games will be the focus of the baseball world while the other 28 teams are sleepwalking through the doldrums of the last few days of spring training. It may help build some interest in the Green and Gold in Japan. Looking at the broader picture, these periodic season-opening games definitely help build interest in MLB over there. I think the flow of Japanese and other Asian talent to MLB has been one of the best developments of recent years.
does anyone know...
how to get tickets for the LA Coliseum game? I really want to go... and I can see the Coliseum out the window.
Shame that the workers at the coliseum refuse to let my camera onto the premises, though. Need a point-and-shoot to get that to work.
"The hard... is what makes it great."
I thought I saw...
...that the L.A. Coliseum game sold out amazingly quickly. You probably need to go to StubHub or some similar site to get tickets.
If I were Dictator of Baseball and Television, I would get the Coliseum game on ESPN or other national television with Vin Scully handling the play by play. Right now it looks like the game will be on local television only (KCAL in Southern California and NESN in New England).
Yep, sold out
I got the mlb.com email when they went on sale and thought about it...but they are gone now.
In retrospect, the rebuilding job made it inevitable
but I'm still miffed that the A's couldn't get their hands on Fukudome. He's like Misutaa Monibooru.
And his contract would have been like 50% off with all the merchandising sales over there.

I just hope
that while the spotlight of the baseball world is on the Japan series, that the Athletics kick the shit out of the Sox. That right there would make the 2008 season for me. Well maybe not, but it would be a hell of a start...

Bring Back The Bash!!!
I hope Matsuzaka makes the trip
and that the A's knock him out of the box in the 3rd inning.
I've gotta think a few people in Japan will be pretty P.O.'d if Matsuzaka isn't there.
I wonder if you can get ...
A's hats for 538.65 Japanese yen on this bridge near the Tokyo Dome?
Orange Pineapple
Unfortunately ...
that bridge isn't on the way from the subway to the stadium ... when I was there last fall, I didn't see any knock-off vendors ...

does anyone know
how much dough the A's are getting for sacrificing two home games? And how much the Bostons are getting? I'm still pissed about the competitive disadvantage the A's suffer as a result of both of these Japan games being considered A's home games. In the interest of fairness it's clear (to me, anyway) the home team designation should be split between the two teams. I would be somewhat mollified to hear that we're making more money because of being designated "home" team, but if we aren't making more than the RedPox on these games then I'll be even more riled up.
They are making more money
(Side note: "We" are not making more money, at least not unless you have an ownership stake in the team that I'm unaware of.)
Also, the "competitive disadvantage" is the win probability equivalent of starting the first game of the season with a Boston runner on second base. If that costs you the pennant...
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
We are the devil rays
To the BoSox Yankees.
The Devil Rays had two "home games" when they opened in Japan against the Yanks. The Yanks even wore their home pinstripes in the games.
I wonder if they are going to do that to us also? I.e., have the BoSox wear their home jersey against us.

sorry I reserve the right to call the A's "we"
but I do, as many other fans do, and I really don't give a fuck what you think of that. Losing two home games is an obvious handicap, and I don't care what you think its "equivalent" is. There shouldn't be a handicap, PERIOD.
Also, unless you are an actual A's spokesman I'm not taking your word that we're not making more than the Sox. What are the numbers, where are the links? THAT I would appreciate, not your penny ante criticisms.
{snicker}
I don't have any links to offer ... don't have the time to research them ... but articles have definitely specifically said that we are benefiting financially as the home team, more than we would having those two dates in Oakland. I don't recall any specific numbers being made public.
Also, much of the HT advantage is from batting last, an advantage the A's will still enjoy.

PT's post
I don't really think PT's post was meant to be insulting towards you. Atleast that's not how i read it. I haven't been on AN very long but i have had a couple of debates with PT. The impression i get from him is that he is somewhat sarcastic in his post. I've never really felt any animosity from him. He just seems to say what he thinks in a very blunt way without sugarcoating it. Although some of his posts can be taken the wrong way, i generally don't get the sense that he intends for it to come across as an attack. Well, atleast most of the time.

I think this stated my philosophy
about as succinctly as anyone I've yet seen.
The "we" thing does really irk me, though...
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
It irks me when ...
people get on fans for saying we. If you don't want to say "we" fine. However if other if people feel a desire to identify in a more personal way why say something snippy like that? No point in it except to be rude.
we
Well i have been known to say 'we' as well every now and then. I will usually catch myself and correct it, but not every time. To each his/her own I suppose.

Remember when that flap came up about the Rockies
and their religiosity?
I feel like this is pretty much exactly the same issue, except with somewhat lower stakes.
In other words, people continually insist on making what I feel are statements which are a. factually false, and b. harmful, inasmuch as they promote a mindset of identification with power elites which really isn't warranted in a lot of cases.
Now, I understand this isn't SocialText.com which is why I don't harp on the issue-- but that doesn't mean I'm not going to speak my mind if it legitimately comes up.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
a. It's not factualy inccorect
and b. if any of the intelligent people on AN, with all we know now, don't think it's harmful to associate themselves with the team, that's their business, not yours.
The issue didn't legitimately come up -- you brought it up.
"It's for your own good. Big strong Devo knows whats best for Poppy" -- Mossback
OK
In the most technical possible sense of the word, it's not factually incorrect, because A=A+B when B=zero. B, in this case, being AN posters' earned income from the A's last season.
Nonetheless I think a lot of people would find it pretty misleading if I said that "We" (meaning me and the Berkshire Hathaway Corporation) made a gazillion dollars last fiscal year.
Look, I'll put up with the turn of phrase (while disliking it), silly or deserving, when it's talking about the team on the field. But not when it's talking about the team finances. If you, Brian, or anyone else believes that you somehow benefit personally from the A's corporation turning an increased profit, fine. But include me out of it, please.
And not to get into a "he started it" thing, but that one sentence above was pretty innocuous. I wasn't expecting my guerrilla war against the phrase to abruptly explode into a philosophical Tet Offensive.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Uh huh ...
listen, if Brian, myself, or anyone else on this site uses the term "we", how about you just assume it's meant in the most limited possible terms, given the context. For the post in question, for example, assume by "we" Brian meant him and the A's -- despite the fact that he obviously just meant the A's even if he chose to use an slightly imperfect but commonly used phrase to describe it. I mean, sheesh, live and let live, would ya?

Paul...
Just pull the stick out of your behind and get real. People have every right to identify with the A's on any level they care to. They don't need you to chide them for the choice. So just stop justifying your rudeness. Your superior attitude does you no credit and is not fooling anyone. You have every right to think whatever you want to think but expressing every thought that you have when it's rude to do so is not the behavior of a mature adult. I am not angry with you but see things as they are.
I say "we"
I say "we". Not everybody does. That is fine either way.
I think that we should discuss this over a game of boxing on the Wii.

OK, so you watch baseball in spite of the innumerable
and staggering financial advantages enjoyed by the top teams, advantages that typically carry with them something like a 20-win bonus in the standings over a cash-strapped team like the D-Rays.
And yet you're going off about a "disadvantage" that amounts to about half a run.
This stuff happens. Cleveland had to play 82 road games and 3 neutral-site games last year.
Proportion. It's a good thing.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Oui Oui
(to be read while whistling "Glory Glory Hallelujah"...)
This is Athletics Nation. "We" may not have a financial stake in the team, but I know that I spend a sizable chunk of my hard earned dough on tickets, parking, swag, garlic fries and the like. Not to mention the emotional investment. "We" are the team. Nico, Blez, Monkey"dont steal my moniker"ball, baseballgirl, IM4oakgal, et al, those are the names that never change. We are the green and gold. Since I have been a fan, the owners have changed, the players, the coaches...everything except the game and the fans. So, yeah, I think saying "we" is warranted.
And I am all for freedom of speech...God knows I post some inane, silly and useless frivolity. But I think profaning another fan is going a bit far. Let's class it up a bit guys. After all, "we" are here to enjoy our team, the community and it is just a game.

There was a really good article, by a brilliant and handsome author on this very site ...

Said author, despite his many strengths, does not seem to have very good aim in placing his comments in the right diaries ...
