Sammy Sosa an A?
MLBTradeRumors.com made an interesting suggestion about a possible DH platoon of Cust and Sosa who mash righties and lefties respectively quite effectively. Just thought in the slow offseason we may as well kick this idea around on AN. Granted there would have to be a move made on the 40 man roster but Sosa would be willing to sign cheaply (3 mil +or-). Would it be a better idea to let Cust continue his mash, walk, or walk back to the bench (aka strikeout) and get a chance to improve against righties, or would Sosa make any sense given the youth movement of the A's.
It's Spring Training, may as well discuss.

Sosa has been too hot and cold
in recent years. Why pay him the money? If the A's want a player with stigma they could hire Bonds who is more consistent. JMO.

I'd say...
...I'd say maybe if we hadn't already signed Sweeney. I don't think there's room on the roster for Sammy. Also, if Beane was going to sign a controversial player, I think he'd go for the whole enchilada and sign Bonds.

its a platoon
signing Bonds has would mean two lefties (Cust and Bonds). Signing Sosa provides a legitimate weapon against lefties while Cust presents a legitimate threat against righties.
Also I don't think the argument was ever made that either Bonds or Sosa being signed has anything to do with stigma or contraveciality. It has to do with making the A's a better team and with a DH as threatening as Sosa and Cust against whichever hand a pitcher chooses to throw with would be effective no?

By the way....
I think we can all agree....Sosa is an A_____ without even joining the team! Along with McGwire, Clemens, Canseco, Bonds...et al. I wish these guys that pissed on the game would just f-f-f-f-fade away

Perfectly understandable response
But looked at another way it could be said that these players risked a lot to bring baseball back from the strike, especially Sosa and McGuire. While I'm not going to say they weren't more than adequately financially compensated, they pushed their body beyond normal limits doing possible permanent damage to produce amazing feats that brought fans to the park in droves.
And now that fans have gotten in an uproar over PED's baseball is throwing these guys under the bus to keep itself afloat. How many players can say they played a big part in saving the game twice?

Hey, I have an idea
How about signing Mike Sweeney for less money and a nonguaranteed contract?
Hm, looks like they already did that.

DO NOT WANT
Cust was about 100 points higher in OBP and 40 points higher in slugging last season. Why would anybody want to take his bat out of the lineup? Even if he struggles to hit lefties, he'd still get his walks.

I'm going to post something on MLBTradeRumors
..about the Giants signing Rogers Hornsby.
It'll be as accurate as suggesting we might go for Sosa.

Plenty of good reasons already given
Also, their seems to be a bit of a roster crunch already. I really don't think we need 2 roster spots out of 25 to go to a DH/5th outfierlder platoon. Especially to carry a one-year at best player on a team that probably won't contend.

Wow
I didn't think the A's should sign Sosa either, but I sure wasn't anticipating the bitter anger in the replies. I didn't know there was such fervent contempt over Sosa.

You want bitter contempt?
Wait until next offseason, when someone inevitably suggests that the A's resign Jason Giambi.
You know it's going to happen...

Its fun to joke about but....
I was under the impression that we were giving up now to get young and better down the road. One more sweeny, brown or foulke and personally I am really going to start doubting our direction. Signing sosa or barry would eat up valuable playing time for these kids we are trying to get ready for '10.

I'd just as soon see the A's loose
a 100 games than to sign either Bonds or Sosa. These young guys need to play and that won't happen if either of them is on the roster. Innings and lots of them are the only way these guys will develop.
BTW They aren't going to loose 100 games:)
