DLD Feb 23-24: Fernando Hernandez, this dump's for you
After reading devo's Staturday post, I (and at least one other person) was surprised by the optimistic projections for Fernando Hernandez. I didn't know anything at all about him, so I figured that I would look some stuff up. Plus, I made the poor decision to go to work on a saturday, so I need some distraction.
First, starting with the real basics (I didn't know any of this stuff until this morning). Fernando Hernandez is a right-handed relief pitcher that we took from the White Sox in the Rule 5 draft. Here are his minor league stats on the baseball cube. In particular, he had a pretty nice 2007 at Birmingham (AA) with an ERA 3.06, WHIP of 1.13, and 84 K to 24 BB in 85.1 IP.
Then he went to play with the Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League and put up even more impressive numbers (over only 12.2 IP) with 0 ER, 5 H, 11 K, and 4 BB.
These minor league stats are pretty much all I've been able to find out about the guy. I would love to hear about what kind of pitches he throws. Here's the small bit of biographical information from an article at scout.com.
The Miami native was a 49th round pick of the White Sox in 2002. He has a career 3.25 ERA and 300 strike outs in 293.1 innings. Hernandez has allowed only 16 homeruns during his five-year career.
Finally, to complete my portion of the link dump, I will present this site. I will refrain from adding any comments about it.

ANer Nebraska, otherwise Ryan Amburst,
had this to say at MVN
Hernandez has been compared to the Minnesota Twins’ Matt Guerrier when it comes to his repertoire, which consists of an above-average curveball, average fastball and decent change-up. He’s a control guy around the zone — he won’t blow anyone away — but that doesn’t mean he’s any less effective. Without seeing him pitch, my impression of Hernandez is that he could profile as a similar pitcher to Justin Duchscherer — who he’s replacing, as Duke is moving to the rotation.

Does anyone know
what percentage of Rule 5 draftees stick with the club that drafted them for the full season? My sense is that the percentage is very low. I'm guessing that a fairly large majority of them are offered back to their original team by the end of spring training.
Last year at this time there was a lot of discussion on this site about the role Ryan Goleski would play on the 2007 A's. Following up on Goleski, I see that he wound up having a crappy season back at AA Akron (.701 OPS).

update on Angel Garcia
from Slusser today:
The A's lost another prospect this week. Right-hander Angel Garcia, signed as a minor-league free agent in November, has decided not to play this season for personal reasons.
It's not a visa issue, as Garcia is from Puerto Rico.

Secret Pentagon report on climate change predicts global catastrophe by 2020. The report
warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a 'Siberian' climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world. The document predicts that abrupt climate change could bring the planet to the edge of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and secure dwindling food, water and energy supplies.

this tipped me
So dramatic are the report's scenarios, Watson said, that they may prove vital in the US elections. Democratic frontrunner John Kerry is known to accept climate change as a real problem. Scientists disillusioned with Bush's stance are threatening to make sure Kerry uses the Pentagon report in his campaign.

I would think the A's won't keep Hernandez
the one part of the A's this year that does look good is the bullpen. If Devine makes the club there wouldn't seem to be a place, all subject to change however if he is really good. There are so many guys for that last spot in the bullpen it seems unlikely unless BB unloads somebody.
by Laoren on Feb 23, 2008 11:22 AM PST 0 recs
89 mph fastball
but good command, is what I heard.
I would like to say that I independently came up with the "next Duchscherer" line (which I used in BBG's questions thread) but given that I undoubtedly read the Armbrust piece above, I'm thinking that the comparison may have derived from his. Oh well.
The key question with Hernandez is going to be whether he can make the team. (Once he's on it, he won't get cut unless he sucks pond water through a straw for a couple of months.) Now, personally, I'd much rather see him make the roster than Kiko Calero, who's a. approaching free agency, b. injured and c. old (and you could say the same thing about Foulke), but there seems to have been some reason that they were resigned, and unlike Hernandez, they have major league contracts.
Here's the current bullpen situation, assuming a rotation of Harden, Blanton, Gaudin, Duke and Eveland:
Guys with options
Blevins
Devine
Braden
Meyer
DiNardo?
Henry Rodriguez
Gray
Guys without options, or with unusable options (usually because of 3+ years of service time
Street
Foulke
Calero
Casilla
Brown
Embree
Hernandez
Plausible non-roster invitees:
Greg Smith
Saarloos
Ziegler
Troy Cate
Make of this what you will.

The "guys without options" list
looks like a pretty good bullpen to me. The only guy on the "guys with options" list I really would like to see make it is Devine.
I think that we might see a late spring training trade of one of the veteran relievers to free up a spot for a younger pitcher. Embree, Foulke, and Calero leap to mind--the latter two if they establish they can pitch in spite of their health issues.
So it goes.

Gaudin...
From what I've read, Gaudin isn't expected back until the end of April or into May, which puts Saarloos, DiNardio, Meyer or Braden into the rotation to start the season.

Since I've actually seen him pitch (one outing)
He's a FB/CB pitcher. Duke's name has already been mentioned in the thread, as well as Guerrier. Those are he two names I brought up upon seeing him, but there's one more that will surprise you, Joel Zumaya.
Maybe it was his goatee, but I thought Hernandez' delivery was very similar to Zumaya's. He's got that ball close to the ear, compact, whippy, violent (but not troublingly so) delivery like Zumaya. Foulke does the ball close to his ear as well, but he finishes in a better fielding position than Hernandez/Zumaya.
He's got fringy stuff. The CB is a plus pitch, but the FB was straight and didn't top 90. Duke and Guerrier should be viewed as his ceiling, not results to be expected immediately.

Baseball America desribes Hernandez
as that rare "crafty righthander" who throws a variety of offspeed junk to compensate for a lack of velocity.
They rated him as the A's 29th best prospect (before the Haren and Swisher trades), which rates behind Blevins, Demel, Carignan, and Kilby among their relief prospects.

It was pretty cool...
At first, I thought that David Rinetti, V.P. of Stadium Operations, had arranged it. But, he couldn't have known we were there because we weren't using our regular tickets. Then, when we were in the offices, he came out to give us our field passes, he said he had no idea until he saw my name on the pass.
Another funny little sidenote: The young woman who escorted us down to the field had an earpiece in her ear and while we were waiting on the field, she asked me: "Are you the Dan Gordon that owns Gordon Biersch?" I'm sure whoever was on the other end of her earpiece prompted her to ask the question. I thought, momentarily, about saying "yes," just to find out if Lew would invite me up to his box. LOL

Former A's and East Bay real estate
On Tuesday, Swisher talked about dealing with the first trade of his career shortly after buying a house in Oakland, which is now being rented by former teammate Eric Chavez. He joked with reporters about the black uniform top being slimming, although he said the pinstripes also will help out.
Come the offseason, he bought a house, and on Dec. 11, his first child, son Rhett, was born....His house-warming was followed a couple weeks later by the uprooting of his family, and his efforts (unsuccessful so far) to sell
his house.
Actually, I recall Haren writing on his blog "Haren's Heat" that he'd bought a house in Walnut Creek during last year's offseason, not this past one...
by OaklandSi on Feb 23, 2008 4:16 PM PST 0 recs
Contra Costa County public records
reveal that Haren closed on the Walnut Creek house on November 29, 2005. So actually two offseasons ago. Purchase price was $1,362,500. The agent's listing shows that he is currently asking $1,437,000.

A's about to get screwed out of a draft pick
according to Rotoworld.
At least, I assume so. Shannon Stewart is about to sign a minor league deal. Logic would dictate that that would render him ineligible for free-agent compensation.
Hard to believe that out of the three potentially unsigned Type A/B free agents that were offered and declined arbitration, TWO of them were from Oakland. It appears that none of the three A's free agents will even get a major-league contract.
The A's had better pick well with that high first-round choice, because they won't have another pick for a long, long time.

There was an old post on mlbtraderumors that Stewart wanted at least a two year contract and no team was going to offer him that. Maybe if he went for a one year deal than he would have signed somewhere and we would have our pick. His former agent must've screwed up something also for him to break ties with him.

this spring's version of "we're going to improve our baserunning begins here:
They might not be the Angels this year when it comes to the running game, but the A's are determined to improve their approach on the basepaths.
Slusser of course duly noted that she's heard this before, and gets a response from coach Ty Waller:
In other years, the A's have talked about better baserunning during the spring, and the emphasis has shifted once the regular season began. Not this year, Waller said."We're not going to back off," he said.

There's a slight problem with the article
Shortstop Bobby Crosby, who is one of the team's few base-stealing threats, said that second baseman Mark Ellis also raised the importance of coming in hard to second, because the A's double-play combo knows how difficult that makes their jobs when opposing teams try to take them out of the play.
Bobby Crosby can't possibly be a base-stealing threat until he learns how to steal 1B.
