2008 Poetic Interlude #3: Duke (Looks Like a "Maybe")
[Original lyrics here.]
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Beane shipped Danny H. out of town
King Richard's yet to pick up his crown
Blanton may be next out the door
Gaudin's labrum and foot and throat prognoses were poor
That's four
Fifty-eight!
Fifty-eight!
Spring trainin' all these jobs on the line
Rookies, veterans, re-treaded A's
Beane may trade more guys off the pine
The scouts whip out JUGS guns and try to low-ball Beane all day!
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Never judge an arm by its radar
or an old catcher-DH by your gaydar
We may not contend, but we just might surprise
Knowin' the genius we think Beane is, who knows what the state of our 'pen is.
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Arthritis in the hips hurts like hell
Now tell me if that's ringin' your Belle
He ain't the only A to go under the knife
But lord only knows what''ll come out the other side
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Though eighty might be all of our wins (until we build a park near)
Eighty might be all of our wins (start me, start me, start me all year)
Eighty might be all of our wins ('til we get to Fremont clear)
Eighty might be all of our wins (trade me, trade me, trade me, trade me)
Oo, what a funky A's team
Oo, we may not, may not, may not like stats.
Our whole rotation's "maybe"s!
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Fifty-eight! Duke looks like a "maybe"
Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke looks like a "maybe"
Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke looks like a "maybe"
Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke looks like a "maybe"
Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke looks like a "maybe"

Unfortunately, after yesterday's Wake Forest game ...
... I could also rewrite this for Krzyzewski's boys.

Heh heh heh
Duke geting bested by yellow-clad underdogs brought back a wonderful memory of last year's NCAA first round VCU triumph. They still have the edge for the ACC regular season crown though.

a bit of advice for embedders
Ignore the fanpost html button that seems to be the "video embed" icon. Just use the standard YouTube automatically generated embed code.
Also: is anyone else having line-break trouble with fanposts? Every time I try to do a posting (at least for the front page), I have to manually code
s or it runs everything together.

how are you adding pictures?
are you in WYSIWYG or HTML view?
are you using the image insert button on the toolbar?

I'm in WYSIWYG
yes I use the image insert button.
I was having a heck of a time the other night. I typed my post in word and pasted it, and it kept adding breaks (and in cases where I wanted a break, it took it away). I switched to HTML and it worked fine until I viewed it. Then I switched back and it worked fine.

duplicate image bug
If you don't mind giving me a bit more info -
When you're in WYSIWYG view, click the image button on the toolbar, enter a URL and then click 'import', it puts two of the same image in your FanPost?
What browser/OS are you using when that happens?
Also, we'll test out the cut & paste from Word thing for you.

that is correct
When I follow those exact steps, it does that. Well, I am copying and pasting an HTML from Flickr. Does that make a diff?
Flickr tells me to use Option 1 (HTML) rather than Option 2 (URL). Option 2 does not give me a duplicate image.
I have Windows XP.
I am certain that I could have explained this differently, but I thought I'd demonstrate my inadequacies in computer-ese, AND ruin monkeyball's post all at the same time.

Oh God yes
And sometimes, but not always, the manual line-breaking doesn't survive the preview screen, so if I want to correct something else I have to painstakingly re-break all the lines.
Possibly related, it now doesn't automatically recognize numbered or bullet-pointed lists, which I'm fond of, so I have to manually line-break those too.

wysiwyg vs. html
There are two views in the FanPost editor - WYSIWYG and HTML.
I assume you were working in the HTML view of the story editor. We don't recognize line breaks as new paragraphs in that view - because it's just a basic HTML editor. Also, it is easiest to insert a YouTube video when you're in the HTML view because the YouTube embed code is HTML itself.
The WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) is setup so that you don't have to use HTML or any special formatting language to style your posts. You just select your text, hit the bold button on the toolbar and now your text is actually bold. It will treat HTML just like any other text if you paste it in.
You can flip back and forth between the two views.
BTW, monkeyball you have that video embed icon because you have frontpage posting capabilities. It's not part of the FanPost editor.

Amusingly
I read on Deadspin today that the Gawker empire just changed to enable video embedding (in really small windows) for all of their comments, which tend to be very short and insubstantial. It's interesting that they've gone the opposite direction sbn has so far), in that the sbn model tends to encourage more fan comment, FanPosts, and generally a much deeper level of user interaction.

ah, that is a very clever way of doing it
instead of putting the actual embed in the comment, it inserts a thumbnail that you click to open the video. smaller footprint, but still available to watch. it's like our video fanshots inside comments...

Finally,,,we find out what
WYSIWYG stands for. I have been wondering about that since the first time I saw it.

I love this quote about Harden's session today:
"I liked the way the ball was coming out of his hands," manager Bob Geren said.
Yup, definitely a good place for it.

Two Cheers!!
(You deserve three of course, but one of them's out with shoulder stiffness)
In the interests of putting my flattery in its sincerest possible form, and with all due apologies (if any) to Ogden Nash, let me add:
Spring has sprung
The grass is ris
I wonder who our players is!

Something I've been meaning to say
I hate the idea of Duke in the rotation.
I think it's a stupid move.
I'd much rather see Meyer and Eveland and Gonzales and Knox and Madsen and Braden fight for the empty rotation spots.
If Duke succeeds in converting back to the rotation, so what? He's gone in two years and wasn't the point behind trading Swisher and Haren to build a team capable of contending 3-4 years down the road? Does anyone honestly believe the A's have a better chance of contending in 2008 with Duke in the rotation instead of Haren?
The odds are Duke won't be as good in the rotation as he was in the bullpen and that struggle will hurt the A's come July when they're trying to trade for more prospects. A quality bullpen arm will net you more then a struggling SP.
The short term gains in making Duke a SP are negligible at best and if you're going to hold a fire sale you should burn the thing down and not try to save a couple none load-bearing walls.
I care.

Devil's advocate:
Haren had to go in order to ensure the A's were competitive in 2009-2012. Given his departure, the chance of the A's competing in 2008 could be considered better with Duke in the rotation than not. Plus, his trade value could be considered better as an effective starter than as a middle reliever. Finally, perhaps if Duke's health seems a lot better following the surgery and he is effective in the rotation, maybe he's not gone in two years after all - you never know how Billy's going to play it, after all.

Sure, but "Duke Looks Like a Really Bad Idea"
would make a lousy song parody.

I agree entirely
The only thing that seems to make sense to me is that Beane's trying to increase his trade value (note the "trade me, trade me, trade me" in the bridge).
