Since when was Cust at First Base an option?
So I was reading the Chronicle this , morning and I look at the A's notebook and Ratto brings up something weird and somewhat scary in his first sentence. "Another quiet but decidedly warmer day at A's camp revealed the arrivals of designated hitter and first-base candidate Jack Cust......" This is the first I've heard of Cust being at first, and I come here every day, so I don't see myself as out of touch with A's news. This seems kinda random. It also doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense, what with Barton probably being our starting first baseman. Has anybody else heard about this before? Or is Ratto just pulling this out of the air?

Typo?
It was probably just a typo or he could've been referring to Mike Sweeney.

I haven't read the article
but I bet that Coffee13 is right.

Not that weird
Guys like Cust who don't really have a true position work out at a bunch of different places in the spring just to see if there's maybe a chance of them being able to fill in there at some point during the regular season. It wouldn't be a bad idea to see if Cust can possibly handle 1B in order to give Barton a rest and get Sweeney some ABs at DH from time to time. This by no means signifies the end of Barton at 1B so there's nothing to really be scared about.

Why not just rest Barton by
putting Sweeney at 1B and Cust at DH? If you've ever seen Cust try to move in the field or catch a ball, you don't want to see him try to do it with 100 feet less warning from the ball about where it's going.

Well, (clears throat)
what we got here Nico is a combo of complex human physiology, physics and savvy baseball strategy going here. Cust or Custy as you call him, may just have a better place at first because he has less time to think. His natural fast-twitch muscle reaction, as in his hitting, may just make him a better first baseman than a right fielder.

If first base is better because
you have less time to think, then allow me to suggest that you begin posting from first base.

I got to first base with a women I met at a bar
and let me tell you, I'm glad I had enough time to think it through before taking off for second. Could have been a big mistake,

Nothing is being signified here
other than that Ratto doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

Or that he wrote Cust when he meant Sweeney,
or wrote 1B when he meant DH. Susan Slusser makes just as many of those basic errors (i.e., not very many but the occasional one) and gets no grief. Which is good. We love you, Sluss. But Ratto, IMO, gets a bad rap - heck, at least as a columnist the guy WRITES about the A's with some frequency. At least give him that.
