CGV Update - PT Cruises!
As part of listening to the community’s feedback regarding the CGV system, the sub-committee, Blez, and I agreed that the circumstances surrounding Paul Thomas’ two strikes were convoluted enough, and the user’s recent conduct has been “good faith improved” enough, that the most fair and appropriate action was to allow one of the two strikes to roll off now, now leaving the user with only one active “strike”.
From that thread, we will also be taking into consideration adding clarity to the CGs in regards to a “statute of limitations” for reporting a CGV, and to how Blez, and/or the sub-committee, may best deal with community complaints of a “chronic” (general, over time) pattern of unbecoming conduct/behavior independent of, or absent reports of, “acute” (specific) CGVs.
Finally, please remember that the new AN 3.0 system that allows comments and diaries to be flagged does not replace or change the CGV system in any way. If the community wants to hold users accountable for comments that violate the stated Community Guidelines, it must report CGVs to the sub-committee (by emailing cgv@athleticsnation.com) – just flagging a comment will not generate a complaint for the sub-committee to consider issuing a “strike”.

I'm glad that...
this happened. Kudos to the committee, Blez and Nico for being flexible enough to listen to community feedback.
Now about the flags...why even have them if we are still required to report CGVs the old way? They seem unnecessary. Not complaining just wondering.
I think because the "flag" system is new,
and until tested can't be said to render the existing old system unnecessary or obsolete. For example, the "flags," as currently constituted, have an option to say "troll" or "inappropriate," but do not have an option to say "CGV" - if you could flag a comment as "CGV" and if doing so triggered an automatic "alert email" to the sub-committee, then I think the flags could replace the "cgv@athleticsnation.com" - but right now that's not the case.

Good answer.
I started to flag your post ..just to see if you could see the flag...but then decided to recommend it instead. Yeah I am bored at home today .
Cue photograph of can o' worms

Thanks, I guess
although this will probably result in an increase in my wisecrack to serious post ratio.
Whether that's a good thing or not probably depends on the reader.

Personally,
I'm happy that your probationary status has been modified. It's sad to see you spar with grover with one hand tied. The reformed PT is hardly any fun at all.

well, since grover is a muppet ...
... remember where he always has one hand ...

So...
Are we going to link from the homepage to the Community Guidelines on this newfangled thang?
And, what does happen if you flag something?
Flagging
I think it's probably good that you can't register a CGV just by flagging. I think that will generate extraneous CGVs for two reasons: (1) sometimes users will just click the link and not even know what they're doing, (2) the ease of registering will cause some to CGV frivolously. As it is, you have to understand the procedure in order to know where to send your CGV, and you have to take a moment to think if you really mean it. I think that's a good thing.
I like the idea of the statute of limitations. Not so keen on the idea of a "chronic" CGV. Either someone has actual violations or he doesn't. If he's chronically annoying you, you ought to be able to find an acute violation and report it, and then he'll be on warning just like usual. If he really doesn't have any reportable violation, then you should be able to CGV him just because you don't like him.

I hope you mean...
you should not be able to CGV him just because you don't like him.

who's this Freud guy
and why he is wearing a slip?

Freud was a quack
He claimed that every young boy had a secret desire to sleep with his mother. Ridiculous - I never even MET Freud's mother.

my desire

we're still talking about FREUD's mom, right?

You're right iglew.
It is good that you can't register a CGV by flagging a post because you hit a bullseye when you wrote that it would result in many, many more reports. But then why even have a flag option?
iglew, the issue comes up when
users cleverly avoid committing actual CGVs but persist in baiting, or belittling, or insulting in ways juuuuuuust below the line. At some point - not easily or soon, but at some point - it might make sense for a system to exist whereby the user can be told, "Look, you're clever about it but 50 'almost CGVs' do add up to something."
Now maybe that's just admin (not the sub-committee) privately emailing and saying "c'mon, dude," but if there's NO wiggle room to "the letter of the law" it becomes like the big brother wiggling all his fingers an inch from his little brother's face and saying "I'm not touching you. What? I'm NOT!"

I'd suggest
that that's where the flags would come in. You're posts start getting flags probably is a sign that you're skating that line and you're really just asking for someone to take the time to compose an email instead of idly clicking a button.

I'm going to flag you just to see if it shows up in my "recent activity"

"There's no real reason why a flight in which one flies naked should be more expensive than any other."
Alrighty!
A comment can't be accidentally flagged, because when you click on the "flag" action, you get a box that says this:
Your flag will not be visible to anyone but moderators. Please select the reason you are flagging this content: spam, trolling or just inappropriate. Then write us a short note explaining why you flagged it that way.
"There's no real reason why a flight in which one flies naked should be more expensive than any other."
That's so if you flag a moderator,
we can go, "What flag? Flag? I don't see one, do you?"

What, no A's flag?
that's sounds like a whole lot of work just to flag someone. Seriously, that seems more inappropriate and CGVish than a real comment. We don't paid enough to work that hard, which is to say, we don't get paid.

Can't you just press "actions,"
then "flag," then either "troll" or "inappropriate" with a comment in the box of "troll" or "too vulgar" or "in poor taste," etc.? That's not so much work.

That eliminates 100% of one of my objections and about 75% of the other. Consider me no longer opposed.

my big brother did that once
and I hit him in the leg with my Dave Duncan baseball bat.
I honestly don't recall much after that.

This flagging business
could be put to good use in the game threads, I think.
The A's colors are green and gold.
The other thing about flags / CGVs
is that if there were a "CGV" option for why you were flagging a comment, it could be set so that, say, 3 different "CGV" flags would trigger an alert to admin/sub-committee, same as one email to cgv@athleticsnation.com does - it is arguably more evidence of a true CGV if three different users flag a comment as such than if one user (often the target) writes in.
Considering how seldom actual CGVs are reported, I'm not too concerned about the system being abused - I'm more concerned about it being underused.

there should be a way to -1 a comment
not for "i disagree" but something negative that is not quite at "flag" level.

i've recently seen on a site where because a comment was flagged x amount of times, the comment was hidden with a message to the effect of "this comment was determined by the community not to add to the discussion and may be inflammatory" and irregardless of your settings, you had to purposely click on it to show it.
