Poll of polls
Over on the fanpost about the latest format updates, there was an inquiry about making poll votes public. In case you didn't notice, in the new AN, you can go to any user's profile, look in the "recent activity" section, and find out how they voted in any poll. Some have questioned whether this is a good idea.
Responding to the inquiry, Clockwerks explained,We didn't realize that people would want to keep their vote private. We'd often see people commenting after voting, explaining why they voted one way or the other. If a lot of people don't like the public votes, we can get rid of that.So let's find out:

double-voting
I just accidentally voted twice. I didn't know that was allowed.
The first time I clicked the "vote" button, nothing happened, so I clicked it again.

As a test,
I just went to another thread with a poll and voted. It did not give me a chance to vote twice. So maybe what I experienced here was a bug related to the fact that I was voting on my own poll on the page that's presented when it's first posted? Or maybe it was just a fluke?
I think you definitely shouldn't be allowed to vote twice. (I didn't do it on purpose! Honest!)
If anyone out there is being scientific, you can subtract one vote from the second option.

I've made a few comments
that, in retrospect, I might have preferred to have posted under user name "anonymous". However, AN does not give me that option. So I live with them. I'm not sure why there would be any difference between comment posting and poll voting.
It's not a big deal one way or the other. I have better things to do than click on users' profiles and see how they voted in some poll.

a lot of voters don't comment
I've seen some polls that have up to 500 votes, and not even close to that many comments. So it seems clear that many voters don't want to discuss which way they've swayed. And while it's true that most polls don't matter, I guess some can be seen as controversial, where a private vote might mean more. But then I again I speak for people I don't know. I almost always comment after voting (and for the record, I still chose the second option).

2 cents
I think that with the way things are (tracking poll votes), folks might be less likely to vote in the sillier polls or for the sillier items and that might downgrade our whimsy score. And I like the whimsy.

I voted for the second choice
I don't personally feel skittish with my choices on polls (mainly because I always choose right) even if people see my vote. But I can definitely empathize with those who do not want their vote seen. And to me, that's why we shouldn't have the votes public; for those who don't want them to be.

I don't mind most of the time if...
my votes are public but I mean what if the poll has a choice of something like: Which smells more Nico or his goat? I wouldn't want my vote to offend anyone human so I would want that private. Public voting could skew the results for lots of polls. People are more honest with privacy IMO.

I'm voting for privacy...
only so that anyone accessing my profile can see that I voted that way.

was so I could see if that action would also be logged in my profile. j/k

indeed, it appears on the profile page
But, I don't see anywhere on this DIARY page (fuck "fanpost"...lame...sounds way less significant than "diary"...I could hear Urban using that exact term to dismiss a worthy dissenting opinion on here..."ah, it's just some fanpost on AN"....I'll rant about this and other changes I dislike in a separate diary) where I can find the list of users who have recommended the diary...tradeoff of more easily accessible poll voting info for a record of recs that's harder to track down? Something like that.

How about "essay"?
Or "position paper"?
What's that, you say? Only I write those? Well, bosh.
I'd suggest "white paper," but that might get the Beane-is-racist crowd up in arms again.

You could get your own corner of the "fanpost" column...
But there has to be a good middle ground between fanpost and essay..."community thoughts" or something, I don't know. As usual, I'm better at pointing out problems than finding solutions, hah.
Also, if people can see what comments I've recommended, I'd like to be able to see who recommended my comments, like the above ones.

Cutthemullet...
You think that FanThoughts sounds better than FanPosts?
by IM4Oakgal on Feb 18, 2008 2:34 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
it's a little better
...mainly because I think of any comment, like the one I'm writing right now, to be a "post"...a diary should be distinguished from that. I'd still like to get "fan" out of the name completely, though. Not that we're not fans, but there's a lot of good analysis on here that just seems to deserve better than the label of "fanpost", "fanthought", etc, I don't know.

which is also why...
I don't like seeing that I've written 20-25 (I forget the exact #) "posts"...no...I've made like 2,000...but those are "comments." But "comments" are "posted"...diaries/AN 3.0 title for diaries are "written." Semantics, yeah, but since I have nothing to offer on the technical side of the testing, here's where I'll pick my spot to criticize

I like "fanpost" just fine,
but if it has to go, "article" makes sense to me. Seems logical, consistent, and intuitive.
Definitely better than "diary".

I have not had to re-login yet since the changeover. I'm using Firefox with Windows XP-Pro, in case you are curious.

just make it private
and those that want to share their vote or explanation can leave a comment doing so.
isn't that the easiest and most obvious solution?

People who want their votes kept private can only vote that way in your poll knowing that said vote will be made public!
