New comments format

We've been listening to everybody's feedback on the new layout, specifically the way we're displaying comments. We've made a few significant changes that we'd like to hear your opinion on:

  1. Got rid of  the boxes around every comment
  2. Increased the whitespace for comments a bit
  3. Increased the indentation for replies
  4. Moved the avatar out of the way a bit, so it's not too distracting
  5. Changed the font sizes to be a bit more equalized
  6. Moved the reply button back over closer to the date and time as it was before
  7. Made the 'c' key comment cycle clear the yellow background on new comments so you know what've you've read
  8. Made the 'c' key anchor the each new comment we cycle you to be more in the middle of the screen so you can see the parent comments if it's a reply you're looking at
  9. Increased the height of the comment posting textarea and decreased the size of the font in there so that you can see more of what you're writing
  10. Put the focus on the Post button after you've previewed so that you can just hit return if you like what you see
  11. Added blockquote and image helper buttons on the comment form
  12. A few performance / speed tweaks

There may be more I'm forgetting.....

Let us know what you think. We are working hard to improve the readability and usability of these comment threads that y'all spend so much time in.

Sounds good so far

And it seems to look pretty good too! I appreciate the buttons to post pictures, links and block quotes. I wasn't sure at first what the blockquote one was, I guess I was expecting it to say blockquote when I hovered over it. The links and pictures ones are pretty obvious. Just something I thought of.

I also like the subjects being smaller and the elimination of the gray boxes around comments. I thought at first it would be difficult to tell the difference between comments with the gray gone, but it looks really good in here.

I can't wait to see the yellow "new" comments stuff in action on game threads and such, that's cool that they become not yellow as you read them.

Impressions

I noticed the new format on another thread where I was still catching up, so I got to try out the new "c" there. #8 is definitely a good improvement. I'm not sold on #7. I was bouncing through new comments quickly and I wanted to back up, but I got confused because they weren't yellow anymore. Maybe I'll get used to it, but it seems to me there's value in keeping them yellow until I voluntarily refresh the page. (Oh yeah, I turned off auto-refresh; I don't like it.) What was the logic for making them unyellow? I thought it was fine before.

I definitely /don't/ like the way the color slowly fades. Is this a generational thing? Do young folks thing this is a cool effect? Me, I can't stand having the page change while I'm trying to read it. Seriously, this pisses me off so much that when I arrive at a comment I'll pause for a second to wait for it to stop fading before I read it.

The avatars on the right are a /huge/ improvement! I never would have guessed it would make such a difference, but it does. They really irritated me on the left, but now I like them.

Thank You

for the blockquote feature! I have used it a lot on the old AN so I appreciate getting it back.

I don't like the way you have the new comments feature now. When I used it to look at new comments they were only yellow for a second and then faded. Before I could take my time reading the new comments now they get lost. Not good. Or is this just a problem on my comp?

I don't mind the fade feature on new comments

I think they just fade too fast. If we could make them stay yellow longer a bit longer, I'd be happy.

by Rocktopus on Feb 14, 2008 12:22 AM PST up reply actions

Could you maybe make

another keystroke that causes the current comment to fade and become non-yellow? Or would that be way too complicated?

Then the reader can actively unyellow a comment when he or she is done with it. I think I'd like that.

There really needs to be an option to hide avatars altogether. I really have no desire to see what pictures people feel the need to put up.

Readability

Earlier this evening I realized why the text in new AN feels "small" to me even though I know it isn't actually smaller. It's because you're using Arial/Helvetica now. Verdana is far more readable for text on screen, at any size. (It's what it was designed for, after all.) Helvetica has all those skinny i's, l's, t's and f's, which turn into eyestrain even at a medium size. (Not to mention the slashes and exclamation points, which practically disappear when next to another thin character.)

The result is that you get less readability per inch, and those of us who don't like eyestrain have to bump up the font size that much more.

I know this is a major design element, so I doubt you'll even consider it, but count me as wanting Verdana back for the main text. (Heads and most display type is fine as is.)

by iglew on Feb 14, 2008 12:20 AM PST reply actions   1 recs

I've noticed that when I type a comment

I get Verdana in the subject box and Helvetica in the main text box. Besides the inconsistency just being weird, it makes it that much more obvious how much better the Verdana is.

Can we at least get Verdana in the input box for comments? That wouldn't break your design.

I don't know if it's because you actually specified Verdana, or if it's because you're letting it fall to the user's default, which for me is Verdana. User's default would be fine. If others like Helvetica (or Trebuchet, or whatever), then they can keep it.

Ok

It's a major problem having the comments fade so fast. I just looked at the minor league thread...it had 20 new comments for me...and the yellow faded so fast that I could only read one comment before I had no idea which comments were new and which were old.

by IM4Oakgal on Feb 14, 2008 12:22 AM PST reply actions

Something is wrong

A new comment is supposed to remain highlighted until you have cycled to it using C (or until you refresh the page), but clearly that's not happening. I'm looking into it now. I'll report back soon.

YW but...

It's not fixed. It still only shows yellow for a a few seconds and then disappears. I just checked it on the minor league thread again...3 new comments and they were gone just as fast as before.
Why didn't you just leave it like it was? I thought that feature was working well.

by IM4Oakgal on Feb 14, 2008 12:44 AM PST up reply actions

I want to make sure this is working as designed for you

Is this the behavior you're experiencing?

* You visit a thread where there are comments you haven't seen before. (Or some new comments appear on a page you're already viewing.)
* Those new comments have a yellow background. The yellow background doesn't fade (yet).
* When you click C, the page scrolls to the first new comment. That comment then fades to white. Every time you click C, the page scrolls to a new comment, which then fades to white, until you have seen all the new comments.

Is this your experience? The idea here is that you can step through the new comments one by one at your own pace. After you have visited a new comment by pushing C, there's no reason to leave it highlighted anymore, since you've seen it, so we flip it to white.

If you're seeing something different, let me know; maybe there is a bug that affects your browser or platform. If you are seeing what I described, tell me more about why you don't like it.

I'm one of the guys that built the new SB Nation

by lovitt on Feb 14, 2008 1:02 AM PST up reply actions

Sorry I was AFK

and now headed to bed. After reading your post ...I realize that I was pushing C and so the comments were fading. I did just check it using it the way you just described. By scanning the thread first,,,and it does hold the comments. So that will work for me. So the C button is only for making the posts disappear I guess. I thought it's use was for TAKING us to the new comments. Sorry for my stupidity I am not good with technology and misuderstood the intent.
I have said it a few times before but I want to say again ...the site is easy to use , looks great on my comp, and loads well. I can easily jump around from thread to thread without any problems. The complaint I had before about the remember me feature seems to have been resolved too. I haven't had to re-sign in at all. You guys are amazing !
Thanks again for continuing to listen to complaints and suggestions. I am very pleased with the new site. Oh and thanks again for taking the time to explain in detail what I should be seeing.

by IM4Oakgal on Feb 14, 2008 1:42 AM PST up reply actions

You're welcome

Your assumption was correct; the C key is designed to take you to the next new comment. But our thinking was, now that you're looking at that new comment, you're going to read it, so there's no need to keep it marked as new anymore. And in fact we can help you see what you haven't read by removing the highlighting. So that's why this feature currently works the way it does.

However, there's already a lot of feedback in this thread that is consistent with your complaint. Indigo nicely sums up the downsides to the current behavior. So there may still be room for improvement.

Thanks for all the thoughtful feedback, everyone. Keep it coming.

warning when leaving page

If you've got text in the comment-writing box and you try to refresh the page, you get a warning saying you'll lose the comment if you do. That is good.

If you've got text in the comment-writing box and you leave the page by going back to the previous page, you don't get the same warning. I made that mistake once and lost my half-written comment. That could be annoying.

(I'm on Safari v3.0.4, if that makes a difference.)

#7

First off, thank you for all your hard work! I know what a huge job this is and I appreciate your attention to detail.

I just wanted to voice my opinion on not liking #7. I loved the way you had it working before. I want all my new comments to stay yellow and marked as new until I decide that I'm done reading them. I often have to move away and stop reading for one reason or another and come back at a later time and I really, really like having all new comments there until I'm ready to move on (I'll sometimes refer back, etc.)

I would also suggest just slightly more whitespace between comments.

Again, many thanks!

by indigo on Feb 14, 2008 8:11 AM PST reply actions

I'm seeing an issue (but it might be just me)

When I go to a fanpost, none of the new comments are in yellow now. If I am reading the post, and someone makes a new comment, it shows up in yellow, but whatever is new at the time I open it appears clear.

Am I just somehow color-challenged?

And again, thanks to all of the team for the work you are putting into this. I have seen many many "new" versions of stuff that took away much loved features and had a group of designers who couldn't care less what the users want. The responsiveness has been fantastic.

I think it was just me. Thats what I get for posting something the second I see it. (probably why I dont post half as many comments that I think of....)

Avatar Placement

I actually prefer the Avatar to be where it was, or at least right next to the Username.

I say this because many times on boards, I tend to glance at the avatar to tell who is making the post. Its a much easier, faster and casual way to sift through a ton of comments. But with the Avatar on the right out of the way, it doesn't help.

Can't please everyone

I see you've slowed down the fade, presumably because someone else complained that it fades too fast.

For me, it just makes it worse. I hate the fade, and now I just have to wait that much longer until I can read the comment. I simply will not read text while the background is changing around it. Drives me freakin' crazy.

in new fanposts that already have comments, all the comments count as new, because it's easier to tab through with the "c" than scroll down.

one reason why I prob will stop

using the c scroll down though, is that once you press C to highlight a post, it becomes marked as read, and if you want to go back to it, its harder to find.

Also, sometimes I like scrolling to the bottom and reading the new posts then scrolling back up to see replies to older comments.

Quick break at work

Still hating that damn slow fade. As far as I'm concerned this has ruined the usefulness of the "c" keystroke. Like Zonis I expect to abandon "c" soon, unless it changes back to the original behavior, which I liked.

The yellow color looks different now. Not sure if the team has changed it, or if it's just different at work (IE here, Safari at home). The yellow comments are a sort of golden yellow at first, but when I hit C to select one it becomes a bright lemony yellow before fading to white.

Most of my posts here have been to complain about things, but only because that's the whole point of bug reports and feedback. On the whole, you guys are doing an awesome job.

I don't know if you're interested, but I've fallen into a pattern with regard to the yellow comments. I don't use "c" to find the new comments. I scroll down on my own, looking for yellow, and then I use "c" to unyellow each comment after I've read it.

I still like the original "c" behavior better, since it was nice to be able to use "c" to find the new comments. But this is workable for me with the new behavior.

Recommended Flogs needs a look

Under AN 2.0, the most-recommended flog quickly got bumped to the top of the list, and the number of total recommended flogs being displayed hovered between two and five. Now, the order in which the recommended flogs are posted is totally arbitrary, and the number of recommended flogs displayed is now apparently almost a dozen and still growing. This makes it hard to find the most-current DLD, which on this site is always the most-recommended diary and which under the old format always got bumped to the top of the recommended list. Whatever the code was for the way this particular feature used to be, I'd recommend bringing that back.

Great job editing the way the comments look, by the way. Like batgirl, I too am now off the ledge.

One feature I really miss is seeing if you had replys to comments. It was in the profile page, then the comments section, of the old AN. It was incredibly easy to go to past comments you made and see replys you may have missed. Particularly older comments. Sometimes I wouldn't be on here for weeks at a stretch, but I could still get a reply to a question I might have had.

I know the comments are saved to the profile page, but it couldn't be that terribly difficult to keep a running tab of replies to the comments. This may have been brought up before, so sorry if I'm being repetitive. I also don't know if this made any sense at all. I'm a late riser, so my brain isn't particularly functional right now.

First of all, the changes referenced in this post

are significant improvements IMO - well done. My biggest concern right now is one I'll share publicly just to see if others feel the same way, or if maybe it's just me...I like to know who's talking to me as soon/easily as possible, so I find the user name a bit small. The green is good, but the font/type is smaller than I'd like. I'd sooner switch sizes between the subject line and the user name.

I'd also LOVE to have the option of not seeing the avatar - I avoid Facebook and other teeny-icony-Cindi-y sites for a reason!

I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal

You avoid Facebook because of avatars?

I thought it was because of the multiple restraining orders.

There is an A in Whimsy.
