It's Alive!!!
I must admit to breathing a heavy sigh of relief. I had a hunch we were going to have to start from scratch and if someone would have claimed my handle I'd have gone medieval on their person. The wise thing would be to take some time and digest the new look but that would require patience and, well... wrong muppet to expect that from.
So what do folks think of the new digs?!
(Let's see if I can figure out all the doo-hickies to post a diary.)

This is my biggest worry at first glance
If the community voice on worthy "fan posts" has changed from recommendations to a simple most-commented barometer, I'd say that's a bad trade. Potentially horrible. But I'll wait to elaborate until I see the system in action more.

recommended fanposts haven't gone away
there just haven't been any that have been recommended enough to display that list yet
by Trei Brundrett on Feb 11, 2008 7:17 PM PST up reply actions
What does recommending do, exactly?
I see the rec tally on the front page. And I see the new "Most commented" box on the front page as well. Do heavily recommended "fan posts" get elevated on the list in some way, or otherwise, well, recommended? Or is it just a matter of looking at the rec tally within the list of all "fan posts"?
Also, anyone else not wild about the name "fan posts?"

recommended fanposts get elevated
there will be a list Recommended FanPosts list above the Recent FanPosts list once a FanPost gets enough recommendations

Linkage lesson
Okay, so that "height=xxx" thing works here, too, to resize the images. So the first image above is its natural size, and the in second I inserted height=150 before the right arrow and after the quotes. It automatically resizes the width to keep the image to scale.

It looks decent enough I guess
But it's way, way, WAY too busy. My completely non-solicited criticisms:
1. Widescreen owners get the shaft. I'm barely using 50% of my screen because the layout is so narrow - I have gigantic grey bars on each side of the screen. This is almost a deal breaker for me.
2. Change the "most replied" to "most recommended" on the front page. There is no reason for the "A's to sign Foulke" diary to show up as #1 just because it has 200+ replies to it. It's older, and recommended diaries should be bumped up and not just the ones with a lot of replies.
3. It's awfully "busy". Between the ads on top and on the bottom, and on both sides, and the links to change settings, and all the different colors, I feel like I may have a seizure.
Just a few small things.
by mikev on Feb 11, 2008 9:54 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
#2 ...
the most recommended is at above the new diaries ... don't really understand the point of most replied, but it's not a one or the other thing.
"It's for your own good. Big strong Devo knows whats best for Poppy" -- Mossback
Oh, yeah I see that now
I was scrolled down too far. Again, an issue with the width thing though. That's seriously going to be a dealbreaker for me, I mean it's like 10 year old technology now to make page width a dynamic thing.
not a technical barrier
we deliberately made the content column fixed width because many usability studies point out that a certain width is easier to read. we optimized the line length according to that. many traditional media sites like NY Times and CNN are fixed width (the same width we are optimized for) and many blogs are as well. we realize it's a big change from what we had before.

I completely agree with your decision
it's much, much better to have a fixed column width.
by rebus on Feb 11, 2008 10:22 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I don't suppose
there's a way we can eventually tweak some of these things through the settings. Things like color, font size (user name is small and very difficult to read, as is the signature line and well, everything), really above 800x600 and things don't look very good (as stated above), but maybe it would work a little better if it was increased in width and font size, the reason I suggest making it a user setting option is to comply with that usability issue you state above b/c I can imagine this working well with low resolution, but having everything tiny and thrown off to the side for higher resolution and wide screen is just brutal.

Serious question for widescreen owners
On the previous site, how exactly did you get more use out of the wider space? Was there some way you could stack columns or something, or do you just keep stretching horizontally so that every line of text is 30 words long? If the latter, doesn't that make it terribly hard to read?

For about a minute, I thought the "Always had them" was referring to the auto-refreshing comments. I was about to be pretty ticked at Blez for holding out on the rest of SB Nation....

that is what he means
well, it was an option in new AN 2.0, but not new AN 1.0 (not to be confused with original AN for the few who remember it), and i believe every other site is still like new AN 1.0 so that's why LL doesn't have it yet.

Or at least, since the upgrade to 2.0 last spring. The autorefresh feature has been in effect, though a bit buggy, and seemingly varying by browser and user and such.

We weren't holding out
it was a matter of having Jon update all the sites one by one or having him spend the time helping Trei and his team work on this. We had to make the decision to have him work on this.

well, i had it turned off
but AN 3 loads too slowly and no longer has the new tags, so my previous way of doing this (auto-refresh off, reload, control-f [new]) no longer works... :-(

have you tried hitting the 'c' key?
that lets you cycle through all the new comments on the page - even if you're not auto-refreshing.

I think I can post a link
This should be a link to Lookout Landing.
The coding for that is:
This should be [a href="http://www.lookoutlanding.com"]a link to Lookout Landing.[/a]
Again using [ in place of <
and using ] in place of >
Linking is pretty easy
All you need to do is write whatever you wanted linked, then highlight what you want it linked to and then hit the little link button above it.

OK, let me try that with Lone Star Ball
This should be a link to Lone Star Ball.

it's a bit tough to tell which comment is being responded to sometimes.

We're also going to work on
that. It was tough to test that in beta because there simply weren't enough users. But we think the design can be reworked a little to make it clear who is responding to whom.

it's the light yellow boxes around new comments...
i don't think they're necessary with the yellow asterisk and C command option (which I like btw).
Does the new AN

I'm a bit concerned about the slow load times...
but I'll chalk that up to the overload from everyone trying to re-register on the servers, not to mention playing around with new AN. I just hope the game threads don't bring down the site.
Eh, I'm sure it's all stable, and any kinks will be ironed out well before the season starts.
All in all, I like it quite a bit. Slick interface, nice job with the single log-in across SBN, and the new features will be fun to play with.

I specifically added 'target="new"' to try to make the link open in a new window, but it doesn't seem to work.

I really like it! but.....
1) grey bars on outer edges make for a real visual headache. I would suggest white.
2) i just scrolled through all 239 comments on this page and it took me about 5 minutes to get to the end - WAY to slow. Using firefox on a mac.
3) much of the info from the top navigation menus seems to repeat itself - the roster, etc. Seems to be somewhat confusing.
keep up the good work!
Type
what you want linked. Then highlight the text you want linked and THEN click on the chain links button. You then insert whatever link you want there and it will show up beautifully.

This is very weird but overall pretty cool too. It does take a long time to load, though I like not having to open every comment I want to read.
The addition of avatars is cool too, because it's easier for me to associate pictures with people than the names.

posts with lots of comments
it took a really long time for this post to fully load. i couldn't scroll until it did load, which was the bigger problem. maybe some way to asynchronously load the comments? (i'm on win xp and firefox, in case it matters)
i don't know if that's going to be a typical problem or not, this is the first post with 200+ comments i've clicked on.
just so i don't sound like mr sour - as i said elsewhere, i f'ing love the new design. great work, blez and gang.

Piggy: Oh, Sir Lies-alot, I will!
Lisa: Dad, what's a Muppet?
Homer: Well, it's not quite a mop and it's not quite a puppet... but man (laughs). So to answer your question, I don't know.
Bart: Why did they make that one Muppet out of leather?
Marge: That's not a leather Muppet, that's Troy McClure. Back in the '70s he was quite the teen heartthrob.

One other thing I'm not too sure of...
If you click on the username, it takes you to a screen that tells you their recent posts, etc, but it also tells you how they voted in polls.
i don't think it matters to me, but not everyone may want the world to know they think AN 3.0 is "meh" or that they voted for Obama.

Most of it was "waiting for assets.sbnation.com." There was also a wait for something called "garner classics.com". Is that a particular image?

Assets seems to be the main problem
though on my end it acts a bit like what happens when I stumble onto one of those terribly overloaded myspace sites.
I'm on an old (I mean old) laptop that shouldn't be running XP, but is, and when I pull up anything with more than say 30 comments here, the CPU usage gets pinned at 100 unril the page is finished loading.
