Giambi Signing? Open Thread

ummmm....

ok...

According to John Perrotto at Baseball Prospectus Giambi appears headed back to the A's, and the announcement could take place during the Winter Meetings, as Giambi calls home to Las Vegas.

I don't really know how to feel, I have said I don't feel great about Giambi signing with the A's, but depending on what other deals are made, if we could keep him in the DH slot who knows? (notice my attempt to stay positive).

Stay tuned for any other news...

UPDATE:

Giambi has been spotted in the Bellaggio, telling reporters he is "looking for a job.."

Yup

Or Cust in the OF. Are Giambi’s ABs in lieu of Buck/Cunningham or Barton worth the defense we get with Cust over Buck/Cunningham in the OF or Giambi over Barton at 1B? I’m not sure that’s a slam dunk, particularly for those who still believe Barton is going to be a big OBA guy (as I do).

He might hit better when birds are migrating south too

That doesn’t mean it predicts future performance.

FWIW, last year he hit .202/.350/.479 at DH and .252/.391/.477 when he played the field. The difference is mostly singles – almost certainly luck.

by Helloooo 1st on Dec 9, 2008 8:28 PM PST up reply actions

No, but there's a sizable body of evidence suggesting that DHs as a group hit worse than they "should"

In Cust’s particular case, there isn’t much to support it, as his career tOPS+ when DHing is 98 (he’s 98% as good as he normally is as a DH).

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on Dec 9, 2008 9:53 PM PST up reply actions

But

in Giambi’s particular case, there is something to support it:
he’s hit .246/.387/.478 in over 2000 PAs as a DH,
and .303/.426/.566 in almost 5000 PAs as a 1B.

(It still might not be predictive if, for example, he was often used as a DH while playing through an injury).

Thanks for tomorrow 'cause I've had enough

I think Cust and Giambi on the field woujld be Great!

Imagine how fun it would be with Cust in RF, Giambi at 1B. A grounder to 1B could turn into a triple or inside the parker (you don’t often see either of those at an A’s game and we could be in for them all season!)

On the flip side, to be serious, I wouldn’t mind a Cust/Holiday/Giambi line up.

Many moons ago...

Sal Bando said he felt the player with the stronger arm should be in leftfield. I’m not saying I agree with him.. I’m just pointing out that at least one person in the game held this unconventional position. I don’t remember his exact reasoning but it had something to do with long throws from rightfield to third base often going through the cutoff man whereas the leftfielder had to throw straight to the bag without help.

I didn't phrase that well.

I think that gets to part of his point. A leftfielder with a good arm will have more opportunities to throw out runners at third base where a rightfielder will have to throw through the cutoff man often, even if he has a decent arm. A leftfielder with a weak arm, like Shannon Stewart, isn’t going to throw out anyone from either position so he’d rather have him where he can make a shorter throw to the cutoff man. Again, I’m not saying I agree with him.

As much as I don't see it working out

I would like the A’s to send Barton down to work on his glove at 3B (if they sign Giambi). Cust and Giambi in the field at the same time would be awful for a bunch of young pitchers.

I can’t see it working out keeping Barton on the big league club being beneficial to anybody. That middle of the lineup would be pretty fun to watch though…

None of them had a great year but I would lean to Rickey having the best overall comeback because he played the most games. Canseco had an OK year considering he only played 108 games. The team Jackson was on went to the WS but I don’t think he factored that much to the success. I was only 4 years old though so i can’ say for sure ; -)

I think Giambi has a chance of having the best “Welcome back to Oakland” season but History is not on his side to have a great year. (if he actually signs with Oakland like reported, obviously)

Pure, possibly lame speculation on my part...

If Giambi signs, could Cust be made available for a trade to land a young shortstop?

Surely other teams could appreciate the skillset of a Jack Cust. The Rays are looking into Garret Anderson as a corner outfield bat. Cust plus someone else for Reid Brignac, etc.? Of course, other teams may serve as better trade partners, but my creative muse leaves me at Tampa Bay.

This ends my uneducated blogosphere trade proposal.

unfortunately, there are no good SS due to be FAs in 2010, and the A’s have no home grown options in the pipeline. Hence the Furcalmania.

I thought about that too...

But if we’re going to spend a bunch of money to end up without a slugger and with a good SS by trading Cust for a SS and signing Giambi… why not just give Furcal what he wants and keep Cust. Cust is younger and much cheaper than Giambi.

According to UZR

Barton was 4.8 runs above average in 1121 2/3 innings of 1B defense.
Giambi was 1.8 runs below average in 898 innings.

Over the course of a full season, we’d lose about 7-7.5 runs with Giambi’s defense vs Barton’s. I would be shocked if we didn’t gain at least twice that (and I think three times that is more likely) with Giambi’s bat.
