The Eternal Question: What Jersey is worth buying?
Around this time last year I realized that the Bobby Crosby shirt I bought at Fanfest 2004 was near the end of its life, and I wanted to buy a new jersey or shirt. When I perused the roster and trades we had made, I was the most excited about Daric Barton and Carlos Gonzalez. I thought I would buy a shirt of one of them, but just never got around to it since they both underwhelmed, as well as my wallet. Once again I am faced with the dilemma, but now it's even more nebulous. Here are a few things I want in my jersey player:
1) The player will at least put up solid numbers on average, or be known to come through when it counts (Marco Scutaro) even if that stat can't be verified.
2) The player has a reasonable chance to be with the A's for at least the whole year, and preferably two or more.
3) The player can be expected to play most of their days in an ideal lineup, or pitch when their spot in the rotation came up (I'm reluctant to buy off injured players.)
Where does that leave me? Daric Barton may not even start at 1st if we pick up a slugger, I don't know who's playing SS, Eric Chavez probably will get injured again, Travis Buck and Aaron Cunningham are battling for right, Holliday may very well be gone after this year. As far as pitching, Duchscherer is oft injured and may very well not be an A after this year, Gio/Gallagher may bust like Barton, and any of the younger players I can't buy jerseys of because they haven't been in the majors not long enough or at all.
That leaves Jack Cust (2008 VORP 31.1) Kurt Suzuki (16.2) Ryan Sweeney (10.9) Mark Ellis (5.9) Brad Ziegler (30.0) Dana Eveland (24.6) Joey Devine (22.1). I'm most inclined to go with Zook or Ziegler at this point, but I'm curious as to what other fans think. Do you buy jerseys? If so, do you put much thought into it, or do you just buy the one with the guy who had the clutch home run the one time you got to go with that one hot guy/gal from work?

If you see an A's fan with a funny jersey
he’s been an A’s fan too long. A new A’s fan is too hopeful to be funny.

surely the number on the back
should be 12?
or perhaps 13. or 14. or, well, you get the picture
I have no solutions, just rejoindres

No with the memories of last season still painfully the most recent of A's baseball
you need DFA on the jersey.
Well my view has always been
that if you want a Jersey, you should get a custom one.
And since the A’s have massive roster turnover, you can never be sure which player will be around-hell, the player that seems to be most likely to stick around always seems to be the one thats dealt! (Haren, Swisher).
So my view is, either get a Custom Jersey with your name, or nickname, or handle, or such.
or
Get a jersey with an All Time Great or a favorite player from the A’s past. A Mark McGwire jersey, or a Rickey Henderson Jersey, or a Dave Stewart Jersey, or even now that its been long enough, maybe a Hudson Jersey. Perhaps a Reggie Jackson Jersey if you can dismiss the NY stuff. You could even go with Lansford, which will have the dual usage of being for Carney and, if/when he makes it, Jared!

Personally I feel weird getting a jersey of a player I never watched.
I’m 22. I really started paying attention and being a fan when I got into high school, back in 2002. The heroes of those teams are Zito and Chavez, and I feel like I want a jersey to build off of now, but I get where you’re coming from.

you've been an A's fan long enough to know
that you NEVER get a Jersey based on NOW.
You etiher get a Jersey based off the past, or you get a jersey based off the future.
Cuase the player least likely to be associated with the A’s tomarrow is the guy on the A’s today.
facepalm.jpg
I'm only a year older than you
and I’d have no qualms about getting a Rickey jersey…
granted, I did watch him play, so….
facepalm.jpg
Maybe I watched him play
but it was only vaguely. It was more of a “Wow Rickey sure is fast” thing, it feels to me like my older brother’s generation than my own.
Anyways, so a jersey for the future then. Zook? Custom Trevor Cahill jersey?

Weird.
I’m also 22, and I also became a fan in 2002. [cue eerie music]
Anyway, I voted Suzuki. He’s a quality player, and his place on the team seems as stable as it possibly could be.

Well, he could end up being replaced by Josh Donaldson or Pete Paramore...
Granted, if its Donaldson, it will be in like 2 or 3 years, and if its Paramore, more like 4.

I like the all time great idea a lot
But no way on the own name and definitely no way on the nickname or handle. Love the All Time Great idea though…especially with the current group of A’s, it is tough to find a jersey to get.
Either all time great, Chavez or blank is probably the best way to go.

I hear if you put Stewart on your new jersey...
over time you develop a cold icey stare that make little kids wet themselves.
If you want to get a good players jersey
that you know won’t be going anywhere for a long time,
I suggest:
Texeira.
They're called RUNS for a reason.
I already got a Ziegler one last year
Yeah, big surprise, right?
No matter how long he’s here, he’ll always be remembered for a record he set here.
Last of the Ninth - Photography Site / jamesvenes.com - Blog
then again, you've already forgotten
so that kind of breaks from your premise of always being remembered ;)
facepalm.jpg
Trick question
It’s not a record he holds. The team holds it. ;-)
(I was at the game. I’d never forget that)

When I e-mailed Mitchell and Ness earlier in the year
They said the new line of Jerseys come out in the Spring, and there might be a Philly A’s one.
facepalm.jpg
I have a knock off of that one. They told me they would no longer be making it at the time.
Man I wish I had waited. I’m happy with what I have, but the real deal is a better product and worth the extra $ if you can swing it.

I do have a Mitchell and Ness Philly A's one
but its too big for me really. Still, it looks great.
facepalm.jpg
I also remember them having jerseys to honor the new HOFers
If they keep that up, we will get a Rickey this year.

Im guessing they arent getting that printer ready anytime soon....

And my hope
is that they do something unique. Ideally, I would love to see the white button up jersey with the “A’s” on the side that they wore for just a couple of years in the early 1980’s. But if I guessed, it will be the white one with “Oakland” on the front.
"Camelot sure fell apart, didn't it?"-Steve McCatty
That is the one that I want too!
It is the same uni that Rickey wore when he broke the single season SB record, so it is possible. I wish they would bring that one back. THAT would be a sweet alt. jersey.

You could always go with....
A former great.

Stewart
Henderson

You don’t have to have a current player to show you’re a fan of the A’s.

I’m here for the long hau….hold on, Blez is on the other line.
I'm here to talk about the past.
Athletics Nation Jerseys?
That’d be interesting. Do we have swag? If not, maybe we can arrange some for next years AN Day?

And the Cindi jersey
with pink glitter lettering and a heart for the number.

interesting.
I think i’ll stay away from that one.

as a biased Unicorn fan,
I would of course pick the Ellis jersey. but for all the normal people, Sweeney sounds like a good idea. him or Zook. I’m hoping they’ll both stay around for awhile. Although I have a feeling it won’t happen.

I own an authentic home Chavez jersey.
I love it and wear it a lot here in New York.

The next time I bother to spend the dough on a real jersey
I’m going Rickey. I thought I was safe with Swisher and that lasted a single season before he was up and traded. So it’s Rickey for me, next time. Thing would be timeless.
As for one of those shirts with the names on the back, I bought an Ellis last season, and am pleased.
RagingHarden: Yeah if you get 20 starts out of me I'll be shocked. Like, I'll wreck my drawers.

Cahill/Anderson
A’s auction site had jerseys a week or so back. I think they were Team USA jerseys.
get a jersey with Oakland on the front
and velcro on the back. then get a set of numbers and letters, and then you can have any jersey you want, and you’re safe through all trades!
"My group runs some frogloks down the hall to finish them off and POP! RASTER! If there was a way to scream louder than caps in EQ I was doing it. Bottom line is the group comes back, heals me, and kills Raster! WOOT!" -Curt Schilling on his favorite memories in the video game "EverQuest"
If you're going with a current player
I’d got with Ziegler or Suzuki. Ziegler’s probably gonna give the better performance to fill your first qualification, but I’ve got a theory that Suzuki’s going to be around the longest of anyone on the current roster — he seems good enough to stick around without being SO good that he’ll be too-tempting trade bait, and ‘young catcher’ seems like something that may actually stick with the A’s for more than 2 seasons.
I’m hopeful, anyway.
Or you can never go wrong with history. And if you don’t want to go with recent history since you didn’t see them play, you could rock the seriously old-school Philly A’s players where it’s apparent that it’s entirely for their awesomeness rather than personal viewing?
"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."
