Branyan to Mariners
Free-agent first baseman Russell Branyan and the Seattle Mariners agreed Wednesday to a one-year contract. The left-handed-hitting Branyan batted .250 with 12 homers and 20 RBIs in just 132 at-bats with the Milwaukee Brewers last season.
So there goes a lot of people's idea about having Branyan as insurance for the corner infield positions. Seems like a lot of people have been clamoring for him to be an A for so long that it seems destiny that he'll eventually wind up in Oakland.
It's obvious the guy can hit in a reserve role which would have been perfect for the A's this coming season but now we'll have to watch him hit against us 17 times next season.
Oh and I'm not sure if this has been discussed yet but Van Burkleo is officially the Mariners' new bench coach now so let the debate commenceresume on who should be the next hitting/bench coaches. I'm guessing the bench coach will come from outside the organization but it's entirely probable the hitting coach vacancy will be filled internally. That's what she said.

To run with Beane’s quote about Oakland bench coaches being like Spinal Tap drummers, our next bench coach will be John “Stumpy” Pepys. Word is that the hitting coach job may go to Eric “Stumpy Joe” Childs.

Didn't he die in a tragic gardening accident?
Ryan Sweeney: I probably irrationally embraced him before you did.
Darn
I really wanted Branyan. Although, if this signing signals a Beltre trade…

I don't see how this is a bad thing
Now Branyan can be a throw-in for the July blockbuster than nets the A’s Beltre (when Chavez is hurt, again).
Or maybe I’m just being an optimist for some reason.

so you're saying the M's would send us their first- and second-string third basemen?

For Bobby Crosby? They'd do it in 0.5 seconds
This is, after all, the Mariners we’re talking about. All the baseball knowledge resides in their fans.

The fact that they just signed a near-league-average player for peanuts argues otherwise

Great deal for them
If only Beane knew he could sign him that cheap.
How wouldn't he know, though?
Offer him 1.4mil and see if he accepts. Apparently the A’s didn’t want him for around that price, though I’m not sure why.
