The San Francisco Giants Have Signed Randy Johnson to a One Year Deal
The San Francisco Giants have given Randy Johnson a belated Christmas present by signing dandy Randy Johnson to a one year deal. The financial terms have not been disclosed.
Well, good for the Giants, this gives them some rotation flexibility. There had been no word o RJ recently so this comes as somewhat of a surprise, so I'm assuming he wanted to sign with the Giants all along. Glad to see he got his wish to play at home, I just guess he's not ghetto enough to play on the other side of the bay.
Discuss.

Yeah, it would have been cool to see him get 300 in the green and gold(just like his Livermore High School)
But, he’s 45 and wasn’t even that good last year so he has a fair chance at being a bust. He’s isn’t going to be cheap and it’s the Giants so he’s bound to collapse.

how come as soon as a player we want goes to another team, people start trashing them
randy johnson was a legit top 5 pitcher in the NL, maybe even the best, in the second half last season.
"I think people in this state like BOTH teams," proclaims Nick Aliotti, the Ducks' defensive coordinator. "Except for our hard-core fans, I don't think most Duck fans would have been terribly upset to see Oregon State going to the Rose Bowl."
Another reason he needs to go.

He should have signed a 2-year deal.

More likely Johnson breaks another historical record first
He’s only 15 hit batsmen away from the all-time MLB career record of 203 HBP. Eddie Plank (Go Philadelphia A’s!) and Walter Johnson are ahead of him. Of course Johnson already holds the record for most birds exploded by pitcher.

Good deal for both, and I don't begrudge Johnson forsaking Oakland
because he made it clear he preferred the NL, saw the Giants as a perfect fit, etc. Honesty: It IS an option.

What the hell happened to Sabean?
I thought he was too busy doling out Rowand/Zito type deals.
Why is he being smart? I do not comprehend.

IMO, what Sabean needs to do is something
he has been (understandably) reluctant to do, and that is to trade Matt Cain for good young hitting talent. I think Cain is going to be one of those “all time good” pitchers of his era but that the Giants, with Lincecum, and good young pitching talent on the way, need to use Cain as a great trade chip to replenish the supply of hitting talent. Because Ishikawa, Burriss, Lewis, Schierholz…Not the answer.

They could get a Haren-like package for him
Imagine what they could get from the Braves, right? Probably something like Hernandez or Schafer/Freeman/Teheran/Rohrbough.
I’ve advocated something like that for the Giants for some time. The Giants can develop pitchers, but they desperately need some close-to-the-majors, developed, high-upside bats that they can pay the minimum to.

Lincecum is really special
The Giants are fortunate (or skilled, I should say) to have Matt Cain as such a good young pitcher, whom they can trade for real value and STILL have Lincecum to anchor the rotation.

Cain is good
but he’s not Dan Haren.
Still, this would seem like the time for Sabean to deal him for a couple of cost-controlled young hitters.

Cain 2008 is a better bet than Haren 2007 was

Ehh, I dunno.
Lewis with D and baserunning, is an above somewhat average player. And Schierholz has 2 consecutive >900 OPS seasons in AAA, Yes, that is the PCL, but he should be able to be an average player.
And more importantly, the Giants aren’t poor financially, even with the Zito contract. What they need is TALENT. Trading Cain, instead of singing players, would help them moneywise, but unless they rob someone, it won’t help them talentwise, I’m assuming that the trade is a fair trade to both teams.

Fair for both teams, good for both teams, could yield
(unless I’m way off, which is always possible):
- Corey Hart, Mat Gamel
- Jhonny Peralta, Wes Hodges
- Joey Votto or Yonder Alonso, Todd Frazier
- Colby Rasmus, David Freese
Or am I way off?

Hmm,
The Giants have Angel Villalona for 1b, long term. Not sure if trading for 1b prospect like Alonso would be a good idea. Votto, possibly since he’s already in the majors.
Also, OF is probably where they are strongest. Even if they trade Winn, they still have Lewis, Rowand, who is likely not tradeable, and Schierholz.
They are talking of playing Pablo Sandoval at 3b. If Posey has quick success in the minors, Sandoval will likely end up there more or less permanently.
My little nitpickings aside, your deals seem somewhat fair to me, except that Peralta deal, but IMO nowhere good enough to make it worth it for the Giants to do.

I do like the Giants prospects you name
(Sandoval, Villanova, Posey) but some are 1-2 years away in all likelihood, so it would still make some sense for the Giants to upgrade at 1B, 3B, OF if the opportunity is there. Better for them would be up the middle, but we all know that great hitting 2B/SS do not abound right now; hence the Renteria signing (which the Giants may well regret).

Did the A's "rob" the D-Backs in the Haren trade?
Arizona knew what they were giving up— it’s not like it was any kind of surprise that the package turned out to be pretty awesome.
But I’d sure say it helped the A’s “talentwise.”

Where does Zito fit in if there is no trade?
That could be an expensive long relief pitcher.

I love how every year the Giants going to get younger
adding a 45 yr old does NOT accomplish that.
Regardless good signing and possibly the precursor to trading for a young hitter.

This saddens me
not just because I wanted the A’s to sign him, but also because the Giants might actually be able to compete for the West next year. Oh and Sabean has actually shown that he should keep his job as well. Shucks.

It's gonna be either Sanchez or Cain.
My friend Kevin over at sfdugout.com seems to agree with me that the smart money is on Cain to going before Sanchez.
Cain is quite a talent and can net the bigger package. Sanchez, while very talented as well, would seem to have more value staying with the Giants at this point, especially since he is a lefty, potentially blossoming into another All Star type of piitcher.
Noah Lowry is about as good as done, according to my close friend, who has an inside ear to Lowry and the Giants. Too bad, I really liked Lowry alot and have heard nothing but great things about him on a personal basis.

so Johnson gets to stay in the NL, where he wants to be
gets to stay in the weak western division, where almost all the teams have some chance to contend (yeah I know it’s hard to imagine SD or SF, but the division is clearly the weakest in MLB), gets to make half his starts in a pitcher’s park, and gets to return to his home region.
Good for him. The signing makes sense for him. It probably doesn’t hurt the Giants either, although they need offense much more than they need starting pitching. But of course, you can never have enough starting pitching, plus perhaps this is prelude to their trading a pitcher for a bat.
by OaklandSi on Dec 27, 2008 7:32 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Signing him certainly makes it easier to trade a SP for a bat or bats

Kevin Correia
had a 72 ERA+ in 110 IP 2008. Pat Misch, a 77 ERA+ in 52.3 IP.
Unless Johnson completely blows up, he’s going to be quite an improvement. People need to look at whom Johnson is going to replace on the Giants, assuming that they trade no one. Even without a trade for a bat, going from the crap they had at 5th starter in 2008 to Johnson is very likely to be an improvement resulting in extra wins.
